Dominic was born in Caleruega, Spain in the Kingdom of Castile in 1170 August the 6th. Before Dominic was born his mother dreamed that a dog leapt from her womb carrying a torch in it’s mouth. Dominic then went to a school in Gumiel.

Dominic’s mother’s name is Jane of Aza and his father’s name is Felix De Guzman. Dominic had two brothers Anthony and Manae. Dominic’s Family lived in a country of conflict, which is why Dominic’s early life was not great.

Dominic was educated in the schools of Palencia and soon after moved to University, where he devoted six years to the arts and four years to Theology. He gave away his money and sold clothes, furniture and even his precious books. He was a kindhearted person and not self centered.

Dominic created the Order of Preachers in the year of 1216 which is a group of people including sisters, nuns and friars that were educated to the Dominican life. They were all from the Catholic religious order. The Head Quarters of the order were in Santa Sabina, Rome, Italy.

Bishop Diego invited St Dominic to travel with him to spread the gospel in the town of Cathars of Languedoc. They traveled by foot and then Diego soon died, but Dominic continued to preach with the help of a community that had gathered in 1207. Then Dominic moved on to Toulouse with a few companions.

As Dominic travelled for miles and miles he finally reached Bologna and became terribly sick. The Order of the Preachers took him to a hill named Santa Maria Del Monte, as they prayed and prayed for him to become better. After a period of time Dominic died on August the 6th 1221.

St Dominic was canonized in 1234 by Gregory XI. He is now known as the Patron Saint of Astronomers and the Dominican Republic. Dominic is quiet unique because he had the courage to preach to the world. It is also because his mother “Jane of Aza” had a dream about a dog which is how Dominic is so well known.
