Welcome

Welcome to our Parish Profile

We are a lively and outward looking church that is keenly looking forward to the next chapter in our ministry. In our profile we have set out a description of our church, parish and community and our mission in the hope that this will give you an insight and help you decide if we are the right church for you.

We are proud of our ancient church and to be part of its legacy and future. As we move into the next phase of our ministry there are exciting and challenging times ahead. New horizons are emerging that will bring a new shape to our ministry:

• Sharing the good news of Jesus Christ by engaging with families and the younger generation in our parish; by nurturing and supporting them as they grow in faith and be part of a growing Christian community.

• The need to embrace the changes that the decisions about stipendiary deployment will bring with the formation of Mission and Ministry Units, working more closely and collaboratively with neighbouring parishes;

• New developments growing in the parish that will add another dimension to our ministry, especially to take forward the current discussions to establish an Airport Chaplaincy;

Thank you for taking the time to read our profile. If you feel called to join us we look forward to meeting you. Whatever your decision, we ask for God’s blessing on you and for the Holy Spirit to be with you on your journey to the next phase of God’s ministry for you.

The village of Eastwood is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “Estwa”. The parish has been since 1163 held by the Crown.

The district of Eastwood lies on the north western edge of Southend on Sea. The parish of Eastwood is situated in the north eastern corner of the district of Eastwood and the southern part of neighbouring Rochford District Council. Originally the Parish of Eastwood covered the whole district of Eastwood, which was much greater than it is today. As the population grew several more parishes were created in the 1950’s out of the old Eastwood Parish. St Laurence and All Saints is the ‘mother’ church of these new parishes.

The western half of the parish is residential area to the west with mainly owner occupied housing. There are also two sheltered accommodation complexes within this area managed by the local council. The eastern half comprises 30% commercial and industrial areas, which include the growing London Southend Airport, several large car dealerships and 20% park land. This incorporates part of Cherry Orchard Country Park to the north. In addition to this the Airport Business Park is currently being built in the parish. Saint Laurence and All Saints Church is on the eastern side of the parish next to the airport. The church is affectionately known as ‘The church at the end of the runway’.

Local schools come to the church for services and study. Eastwood Community Hall is located on the newer housing estate in the parish and has been used for Sunday School in the past. There are three hotels located near to the airport. The Southend Ambulance Service also has a major base at the end of the road by the church.

The Church

The building we know today developed over the 12th to 16th centuries and has been described as ‘one of the finest and most important small medieval churches in South Essex and of exceptional architectural, archaeological and historical significance’. The site itself is also of ‘considerable, possibly exceptional, archaeological significance’. (Church Buildings Council of the Church of England) The building is Grade One Listed.

There is a ring of six bells, two of which date from 1380. The bells are rung every Sunday.

It is worth reflecting that men and women have been worshipping God here for over 1000 years and still do so today. At St Laurence we are very proud of our church’s heritage and are very aware of the part we have to play as custodians today, preserving it as a place of worship for the years to come.

We need to ensure that the internal areas of the church can accommodate the needs of the services and the congregation in the modern world. In recent years some changes have been made. In 2014 we undertook refurbishment of the North Aisle and Choir Vestry, which created a vestry space with a small kitchen area and a combined accessible toilet and baby changing facility. A glass partition has been built between the North Aisle and the main body of the church with double opening doors. These alterations created a small area for a crèche and overflow seating for some services. In 2015 the choir stalls were permanently removed to make a more flexible area for use in a variety of ways including moving the altar closer to the congregation. Other modern additions have been the installation of an audio visual system and T Loop, which support the services.

Worship

Page 6

The pattern of worship on Sundays aims to cater for all our people. Our style of worship is best described as being “Evangelical, with a generosity towards the wide spectrum of traditions within the Church of England”. Our regular pattern of worship on Sundays is;

9.00am Holy Communion is celebrated using the Book of Common Prayer,

10.30am Holy Communion service using Common Worship,

6.00pm 1st Sunday of each month Evening Prayer or Holy Communion; this also provides the opportunity for an occasional Healing Service.

Baptisms generally take place at 10.30am on the first Sunday of the month replacing H.C..

The services are all supported by members of the congregation as readers, intercessors and servers. There is a crèche area in the side aisle for family use during services. Our sung worship is led by recordings and projected on screens, on special occasions our organ is played. Morning Prayer takes place in the vestry adjoining church from Monday to Friday. We hold a midweek morning Communion once a month.

There are several groups meeting regularly to Share the Bible and these are usually supplemented by additional groups during Advent and Lent. Prayer is co-ordinated through our Parish Prayer Diary which is produced monthly. The relevant roads are included in our parish magazine which is delivered to all the homes in the parish. It is available on our website and entries for the week are included in our Sunday newssheet

Special services are held throughout the year and have included a Celebration of Marriage, a Memorial Service, and local primary school services. These are all well supported and have provided opportunities for the wider community to be involved in the life of St Laurence’s. Our Easter services were very special as Bishop John of Bradwell joined us to officiate at our two morning services.

Sharing the GospelAs a parish in the Diocese of Chelmsford we are charged to be a Transforming Presence in our community, open and welcoming to everyone, and serving all people. As part of our shared mission our strategic priorities are:

Living a distinctive Christian life in the world.

Evangelising effectively.

Holding ourselves mutually accountable over the basics of Christian ministry.

Developing a new vision for a Church serving in a missionary context.

Over the years at St Laurence we have explored various styles of worship, particularly celebration of special events. It is our ambition to reach out to as many people as possible, in particular families, by providing a broad range of ‘services’ in the hope of sharing the Gospel with as many of our diverse community as possible. In our quest to achieve this we have explored many avenues, looking to provide something that is attractive and engaging to potential participants. The Occasional Offices are part of the gift of this church, giving us the opportunity to engage those who otherwise would not come to church.

So, what have we been doing and have we been successful?

Yes and no is the answer to these questions.

Mission and MinistryYouth MinistryIn 2014 Bishop Stephen set the diocese the challenge to ‘do something different’ to celebrate the diocesan centenary. Messy Church was just beginning to spread at a national level so we decided to try it out. Five years later it is still the most successful of our engagements with families with young children. Following on from this success, in 2016 our young curate reinstated a Holiday Bible Club ‘Ready for Rio’. This was held in the first week of the summer holidays for children of primary school age and was a big hit with the children, who joined in the fun and imaginative way to learn about God. Two more similar events have been held. These are our most successful activities in our youth ministry programme.

Our contact with the three schools in the parish is mainly at Christmas and Easter with assemblies taking place in school at other times of the year. Our strongest link is with Eastwood Primary School where our last vicar was an elected governor. These children also come to the church as part of school projects.

St Laurence has a long association with the 1312 Squadron Air Cadets based at the airport. Before the road was re-routed for the runway extension the cadets would parade to church for special occasions. Their Enrolment/Christmas Service is held annually in church and the cadets assist with maintenance activities in the churchyard and participate in our major summer and winter fundraising events as part of their Duke of Edinburgh awards. It is traditional for the vicar of St Laurence to be their padre. This relationship grew during the last incumbency.

What didn’t work?

Taking Messy Church style activities into a primary school as an after school activity as it turned into a child minding service as the parents did not have to be there. Junior Church, known as JAM, ‘Jesus And Me’, worked for a while when we had a few more children attending church on Sunday but eventually the number of children dwindled.

Adult MinistryPeople who live in Eastwood love Eastwood and do not usually move very far, if at all.

Caring for the needs of the adult population both in and out of church is one of our strong commitments, prompted by the demographics of the area. (Age Profile Appendix B)

Through our links with Dementia Friends and Age Concern we held a Dementia Awareness event which was well supported. This led to Afternoon Tea with entertainment as a midweek event every three months. Age Concern provided transport for those who weren’t able to get out without assistance. This initially was a success.

Weekly Coffee Morning in the hall is a great success. Tea, coffee, toast and cakes create the atmosphere for lively chat and banter. This is our longest running activity.

Singles Lunch is held monthly. The group meet in a local restaurant.

Bingo or Beetle Drive Afternoons are held bi-monthly in the church hall. A fundraising event aimed at the retired population who might just spend Saturday alone, these afternoons have proved to be hilariously good fun and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

What didn’t work?

Afternoon Tea had transport problems when Age Concern had other commitments. There were also clashes with other events. We are now looking to reinstate it along the lines of ‘Gift of Years’ through Messy Vintage, sharing the Messy Church ethos with the elderly.

Mid-week carol services at lunchtime never really took off despite the industry close by.

Church in the Lounge at Scott and Bishop Houses on a monthly basis became unsustainable when the make up of the residents changed to include many residents who were still working.

‘Where are we going?

We want our new Priest to help us think differently and adapt to the reality of the future of our Church. We want to grow and not stand still, looking forward with anticipation to what the future will bring.

We need:

to spread God’s Kingdom here in Eastwood in ways we haven’t thought of yet. We have a strong foundation and we need to build on it and move forward taking risks and challenging ourselves to look outside our comfort zone.

to continue to work with our neighbours to be successful at sharing our mission with a wider area and meeting the needs of all.

to realise the potential which the development of the airport and the commercial areas will offer, for new opportunities to share God’s love and care, in ways we have not begun to imagine.

We want to continue the journey we have begun and to be led by the Holy Spirit as we encourage and care for one another, love and pray for all in our community. To be known as a loving, caring community for all, at the end of the runway.

Could you be the one for us?

Wishing you God’s blessing always.

The PCC

The P.C.C. is currently made up of 13 members and it was decided at the April meeting to continue the practice of splitting into sub-committees to allow greater discussion on particular issues. Each sub-committee reports back to the full P.C.C for their approval of any decisions and meet bi-monthly alternating with the full council. In May 2018 the P.C.C held an Awayday to discuss the mission of St Laurence and All Saints Church for the future.

The Buildings and Finance Team monitors the financial position of the Church and sets the budget. They also consider the needs of the church building and the church hall and report regularly to the full PCC. Please see the separate Treasurer’s Report.

The Fundraising Team plans fund raising events for church and charity and these take place throughout the year. Events are reviewed at each meeting of the Fundraising Team and adjusted as necessary.

The Pastoral Team considers ways in which we can support and develop our caring ministry to the church and the parish. Pastoral concerns and needs are identified. The Singles Lunch Club has continued to thrive and the Afternoon Teas in conjunction with Age Concern became less popular. The monthly mid-week communion has continued.

The Mission and Ministry Team are continuing to organise Messy Church regularly throughout the year and Honeybees baby and toddler group weekly through their dedicated teams of volunteers. In 2018 Holiday Bible Club was a success. The team continues to consider ways to develop the mission and ministry work in the parish and continue the good work in the schools in our parish so well developed by our previous vicar during his time at St Laurence’s.

Finance

Our main income comes from a core of committed givers, mainly the congregation, many of whom give on a regular basis through bank transfer or the envelope scheme. Other sources of income are:

Gift Aid Tax Gift Day Weddings and Funerals

Fund raising events Church hall lettings fees

To support the churchyard we also have a Giving Scheme for families who have relatives buried there. The proceeds from all forms of fundraising go directly to the P.C.C to support the day to day expenses of the church and churchyard.

Friends of Saint Laurence organise events to support the fabric of the church; these donations are reserved for major projects.

Our major expenditure is our significant Parish Share, which we are proud to pay in full each year. Each year we set a realistic budget, which includes all aspects of church finances. This is monitored regularly by the Finance and Buildings Team; reports are presented at every PCC meeting.

Our church is regularly maintained in good order by several groups of volunteers, who clean the church and do the flower arranging throughout the year. We undertake minor repairs ourselves. The last Quinquennial Inspection was carried out in 2015.

We recognise that Charitable Giving in support of external charities is an important part of our Christian calling and our regular support goes to a variety of local, national and international charities.(See Appendix F)

St. Laurence’s churchyard is a place of tranquility and beauty that makes it a much loved place to visit. Members of our congregation and families with loved ones buried here work hard to make sure that churchyard is well cared for so that everyone who visits, for whatever reason, can enjoy the peace of this place.

Tuesday morning is a special time in the life of the churchyard; it’s gardening time. All year round our ‘gardening crew’ busy themselves mowing, strimming, weeding, planting, pruning or litter picking keeping the grave areas and pathways neat and tidy. They make it a great place to be, our little oasis of peace in a very busy world. On Tuesday mornings the church is open to visitors with a member of church on hand to meet and great visitors.

Our churchyard brings together the many communities that have connections with the church and/or the churchyard. Eastwood has a long heritage of Romany families and these families are part of the heritage of St Laurence. They are baptised, married and buried here. This is their church and churchyard and they contribute greatly to upkeep of the churchyard. Some are members of the congregation today.

Churchyard VisitorsOur closeness to the airport brings another group to visit, the aviation enthusiasts. Complete with binoculars, cameras. seat and a flask they come to watch and wait like the twitchers, waiting for the that special sighting of a Spitfire or, maybe just that Easyjet number they are missing. Others come to wave goodbye to relatives going away on holiday, while some come just to watch the planes and ponder on where they are going to or coming from. Children especially love to watch the planes take off and land.

Others just come for the peacefulness of the place; somewhere to be restful and to lose themselves in thought. Local workers bring their lunch in the summer months, others bring their dog. Whatever the reasons these occasions are a great opportunity to chat and make friends.

The Vicarage

The vicarage is situated next to the church hall and is a short walk from the church. It is a spacious four bedroomed family house set in large gardens to the front and back. The front garden is walled with a gate to the front and a gated driveway to the side with ample parking space. The brick built garage and attached storage sheds are detached from the house. A fence separates the gardens between the house and the garage behind this there is also a large decked patio area.

Upstairs the house benefits from four large bedrooms, three of which are doubles. The master bedroom has an en-suite shower and toilet and there is a separate modern bathroom. There is a capacious loft area accessed by a built-in loft ladder.

The ground floor comprises a large lounge with front and back aspects and patio doors leading to the rear garden, a separate dining room, a modern kitchen with hob and oven, a utility room and a separate w.c.. To the left of the front door is a large, sunny vicar’s study with a separate entrance from the lobby for visitors and a second door from the hall for privacy. There is also a door leading from the lobby to the main house. The house was extensively refurbished seven years ago, the kitchen and bathrooms were all modernised and double gazing was fitted throughout the property. The house was redecorated throughout and has been maintained in good order.

Deanery Message

Page 18

The Parish of St Laurence & All Saints Eastwood.

St Laurence and All Saints, Eastwood is one of fifteen churches within the twelve parishes of Hadleigh Deanery. The Deanery is part of the Diocese of Chelmsford and the Diocese the second largest Diocese in the country.

The Deanery is the most southerly Deanery of the Diocese and is situated on the Northern Bank of the Thames Estuary, embracing Canvey Island in the South and stretching up to London Southend Airport in the North East where we find the ancient Church of St Laurence and All Saints. The Deanery currently serves a population of some 131,906 (2018). Growth in numbers is anticipated with the planned housing developments and electoral roll figures at 2019 are 1,327.It is an urban and suburban, rural and coastal environment with diverse demographic, including social deprivation in parts of the Deanery. In the 2012 Olympics Hadleigh hosted the Mountain Biking event which gave rise to increasing areas of business and commerce throughout the Deanery and some of that has been maintained.

Hadleigh is probably one of the UK‘s most diverse deaneries with the broadest spectrum of ecclesiology, church tradition and theology and although a source of richness, variety and celebration it presents its challenges with effective co-operation between the diversity of church tradition.

As a forward looking Deanery mission activities are encouraged, supported by the Deanery and the Diocese, to discern areas for new Christian Communities, such as the “LegacyXS” Skate Park and the “Seeding” initiative in a Parish across the Deanery Boundary.

Ministry Units. They have been proactive in discussions with surrounding Parishes who are also engaging in the same exercise. St Laurence & All Saints is a very supportive and contributory member of the Deanery with evidence of growth within that Parish and continues to thrive with an active congregation and it is encouraging that the Parish sees the potential in attempting to establish an Airport Chaplaincy and an Industrial Chaplaincy; these would enhance the Parish and Deanery. It is hoped with good will, prayer and co-operation that a robust and effective Mission and Ministry Unit will evolve to serve this community and so sustain and support the growth of their congregation for the future.

The Bishop

A Message from Bishop StephenIn the Chelmsford Diocese we believe that God is calling his church to be a transforming presence. Our vision is that the church - that is the people of God here in Essex and East London - should be a transforming presence in every one of our parishes. These are our priorities:

• To inhabit the world distinctively.

• To evangelise effectively.

• To hold ourselves accountable to one another and to God for the stewardship of the gospel.

• To re imagine the way we minister so that each ordained minister and each individual Christian discovers their part in God’s ministry and so that each church flourishes.

To this end we are looking for priests who are excited by this vision of becoming a church which is itself transformed, and which is becoming a more visible and effective presence in the huge diversity of communities that make up this most exciting and energetic part of England.

There are many challenges ahead of us.

• We are a diocese generously subsidised by the national church. We need to become financially self-sufficient.

• Leadership often seems distant. We are creating patterns of leadership that are closer to the parishes. And we are looking to develop missionary leadership at all levels of church life. Nearly half our clergy will retire in the next ten years. We need to find out how to minister with fewer stipendiary clergy and with a re-imagining of how stipendiary ministry works. We need to re-organise the way parishes relate to each other in what we are calling Mission and Ministry Units.

• Some of our congregations still think ministry is what Vicars do. We have a vision of ministry where the whole people of God are involved in the whole of God’s ministry. We are also experimenting with new forms of authorised lay ministry.

• Church must be a safe place. All those in ministry will be expected to undergo training that will equip them

Page 21: St - Diocese of Chelmsford€¦ · St Laurence and All Saints is the ‘mother’ church of these new parishes. The western half of the parish is residential area to the west with

Page 21

continuedto respond well in situations associated with safeguarding.

• Levels of church going are below the national average. We need to get evangelism on to the agenda and into the lifeblood of every church. We encourage and train churches to put on weekends of mission and outreach. One of our aspirations is that every benefice should have a trained lay evangelism enabler.

• We are developing missionary discipleship, so that every church in the diocese is a place where Christians are formed in order to be sent out in witness and service.

Despite planning for a future with fewer stipendiary clergy, we remain as committed as ever to the local church. And what is the local church, but that community of men and women gathered around Christ, and living and sharing the gospel in the networks and neighbourhoods of their lives? But we need priests to lead and to serve. We know we need to change. We can only be a transforming presence when we have allowed God to transform us. Therefore at the heart of all we do is a longing for intimacy with God and a renewed life of prayer. First and foremost a priest is a minister of the word and sacrament. All ministry flows from this. But a priest shares the ministry of the bishop, therefore presbyteral ministry will increasingly be a ministry of oversight, guiding, nurturing and directing the mission of God’s church in the communities we serve.

It is an exciting time to be part of God’s missionary movement for the world, and the Diocese of Chelmsford is an exciting place to serve. We have a clear vision and we are looking to appoint clergy who will share this with us. In every parish we long to see each person and each community grow in faithfulness and ministry so that together we may serve in the world and Christ may be made known.

B: Southend on Sea

Page 24

Southend on Sea is a resort town on the north eastern shore of the Thames Estuary in Essex. Here in Southend you’ll find all the traditional pleasures you’d expect from a bustling seaside town, like our fantastic beaches and lively seafront. But look closer and you’ll discover there’s so much more besides the seaside in Southend.

The first settlement in Southend is thought to have been a 6th century Saxon village at Prittlewell. It soon became a busy market town, and by the end of the 19th century had expanded to reach the Thames. Southend is a lively and thriving town. The High Street is a busy pedestrianised shopping centre, home to a broad range of retailers, shopping malls, high street shops, cafes and restaurants offering a wide range of places to eat. The High Street leads down to the seafront and onto our famous pier, the longest pleasure pier in the world. There are seven miles of coastline to explore along the seafront from Leigh on Sea in the west to Shoeburyness East Beach. Whatever your interests are from a deck chair to a stroll along the prom, sailing, popular water sports, cycling or a ride on a rollercoaster Southend seafront has something for everyone.

There is a flourishing cultural scene with art galleries, two theatres, museums, a multi-screen cinema and several performance venues. There are various annual music events held in our local parks and the parks themselves are very popular and well maintained. There is a wide range of other leisure activities available for both residents and visitors, including football, rugby, golf, tennis, cycling and running clubs. The leisure centre at Garon Park was used as a training pool for the 2012 Olympic Games and holds national diving events, whilst the park at nearby Hadleigh hosted the Olympic mountain bike events.

Schools

• Pre-schools: Eastwood is well served with pre-schools.

• Primary Schools: Eastwood Primary School and Heycroft Primary School. Both are in the Parish.

• Secondary Schools: Southend offers a broad range of secondary and higher education opportunities from grammar to secondary academies, local colleges and the University of Essex. Pupils with special educational needs are well catered for by the provision of specialist schools, one of which is in our parish.

Shopping

Three major shopping centres are within easy reach.

• Westfield in Stratford is easily accessed by rail on the Liverpool Street line from the Airport station.

• Lakeside is reached via the A13, approximately a thirty minute drive. Costco Warehouse and Ikea are in the same complex.

• Bluewater in Kent is about a forty-five minute drive via the Dartford Crossing.

• Tesco super store on the A127 is the nearest to the vicarage and a Morrison’s supermarket is in the centre of the newer housing complex in the parish. All the major supermarket chains operate across the town.

Health Care

• Southend University Hospital has an A & E unit and is approximately 10 minutes from the vicarage by car

• Spire Wellesley Private Hospital is situated on Eastern Avenue in Southend.

• Eastwood has three doctor’s surgeries - two at Kent Elms and one at Scott Park - all are close to the vicarage.

• There is a large dental practice near the church.

Sports and Leisure

Leisure time is well catered for locally and across the town.

• David Lloyd Centre, Westcliff Rugby Club and the Len Forge Football Development Centre are all in our parish.

• Rochford Hundred Golf Course is five minutes away from the vicarage. There are several others available in the town.

• Garon Park offers a swimming complex, athletics facilities and a golf course.

• The seafront offers plenty of options for water sports.

Public Transport and Road Links

The town benefits from good transport links by road, rail and air.

• There are two rail lines to London, which is less than an hour away, with the nearest station for the parish being Southend Airport on the line to London Liverpool Street.

• London Southend Airport (Voted Best London Airport 2013 – 2018 by Which magazine) is rapidly expanding and offers flights to destinations throughout Europe and is five minutes from the vicarage.

• Local bus services are good. The No.9 service runs from Rayleigh Station in the west to Shoeburyness in the east via Eastwood and central Southend. The bus stops outside the vicarage.

• Main roads into Southend are the A13 and A127. The A127 has an exit two minutes from the vicarage.

The Population of Eastwood Profile

The majority of the adult population of Eastwood was approximately 45plus in the 2011 according to census statistics. Today there is a higher population in the retired age groups probably due to improved lifestyle and health care. This is reflected in the age profile of our congregation.
