FEASTS CELEBRATED THIS WEEKApril 28th – Second Sunday of Easter
Gospel Reading: John 20:19-31 – Thomas believes because he sees Jesus. Background on the Gospel Reading: In today’s Gospel, Jesus appears to his disciples on the day he rose, wishes them peace, and gives them the Holy Spirit, through whom the human race can be reconciled to God and experience His peace. Thomas was not with them that night, and not seeing the risen Lord himself refused to believe. But he stayed with the community and was present a week later when Jesus appeared again. Thomas professed faith, not just in the resurrection of Jesus but in His divinity, exclaiming “My Lord and
my God!”Today is also Divine Mercy Sunday, proclaimed such by Pope John Paul II when he canonized Sr. Faustina Kowalska. St. Faustina, 1905-1938, was a member of the Polish Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. She recorded messages from Christ, who asked her to promote devotion to the Divine Mercy, in her Diary, which has been read by millions and is still in print.
April 29 – St. Catherine of Siena (1347 – 1380)St. Catherine of Siena was a Dominican tertiary, and mystic, the 24th of 25 children. At 16, she withdrew from her family to lead a life of intense prayer. When she emerged, she began to dedicate herself to care of the sick and poor. After a series of mystical experiences, Catherine felt compelled to write letters to those in Church authority. Her influence became so great that papal legates consulted her. St. Catherine begged Gregory XI to return the papal residency from Avignon, France to Rome, which he did in 1377. She left behind her writings, “The Dialogue: A Treatise of Divine Providence,” letter and prayers.
April 30 – St. Pius V, PopeSt. Pius V, who was born in 1504, joined the Dominicans at the age of fourteen; he was sixty-two when he was elected Pope. His reign, though short, was one of the most fruitful of the sixteenth century. To Protestantism, which had proclaimed the Reformation, St. Pius replied by applying the decrees of the Council of Trent for the reform of the Church. He played a great part in the return of the clergy to ecclesiastical discipline. Against Islam, which threatened the West, he succeeded in forming a coalition of Christian forces: and by public prayers, organized everywhere at his request, he was instrumental in obtaining the decisive victory of Lepanto in 1571. He died the following year on May 1. We also owe to St. Pius the reformation of the liturgical books of the Roman rite.
May 1 – St. Joseph the WorkerThe feast of St. Joseph the Worker was established by Pope Pius XII in 1955 to Christianize the concept of labor and give to all workmen a model and a protector. By the daily labor in his shop, offered to God with patience and joy, St. Joseph provided for the necessities of his holy spouse and of the Incarnate Son of God, and thus became an example to all laborers. “Workmen and all those laboring in conditions of poverty will have reasons to rejoice rather than grieve, since they have in common with the Holy Family daily preoccupations and cares” (Leo XIII).
May 2 – St. Athansius, Bishop & Doctor of the ChurchSt. Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria and a great defender of the orthodox faith, throughout his life opposed the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Christ and the trinity of God. St. Athanasius took part in the Council of Nicea in 325 and until the end remained a champion of the faith as it was defined by the Council. In him the Church venerates one of her great Doctors. He was subjected to persecutions for upholding the true teaching concerning the person of Christ and was sent into exile from his See no less than five times. He died at Alexandria in 373 after an episcopate of forty-six years.
May 3 – St. Philip, ApostleThe Apostle Philip was one of Christ’s first disciples, called soon after his master’s baptism in the Jordan. The fourth Gospel gives the following detail: “The next day Jesus was about to leave for Galilee, and He found Philip. And Jesus said to him: Follow me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law and the prophets wrote, Jesus the Son of Joseph of Nazareth.” And Nathanael said
to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” (John 1:43ff) — The Church’s Year of Grace, Pius Parsch
