First Reading Acts of the Apostles 15:1-2,22-29 The early Church community determines, with the help of the Holy Spirit, not to impose the requirement of cir-cumcision on Gentile Christians.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 67:2-3,5,6,8 A prayer that all the nations sing praise to God.
Second Reading Revelation 21:10-14,22-23 The vision of the splendor of the heavenly Jerusalem is described.
Gospel Reading John 14:23-29 Jesus promises his disciples that the Father will send the Advocate, the Holy Spirit.
Background on the Gospel Reading
This portion of John's Gospel comes near the end of the first of four chapters that make up Jesus' long farewell discourse at the Last Supper. This section of chapter 14 actually sums up the themes of the opening of the dis-course: the Christian's life is not shaped by Jesus' ab-sence but by God's abiding presence; God's presence overcomes anxiety about God's absence; and the present holds in it the seeds of a fresh future shaped by love, not fear.
These verses also contain a glimpse of some of the other themes of the farewell discourse: Jesus' relationship with the Father and the disciples' relationship to Jesus connect the disciples to the Father as well. Jesus promises to send an Advocate or intercessor who will remind the disciples of everything that Jesus taught them and bring them peace.
Jesus is preparing his disciples in advance for his ab-sence so that they will continue to believe in him and not feel all alone after his return to the Father. After the ini-tial excitement of his Easter appearances, Jesus will re-main with his followers in a very different way through-out the centuries.
As our celebration of the Easter season is coming to an end, the liturgy reminds us that Jesus remains with us through the Holy Spirit, who teaches us everything we need to know, reminds us of all that Jesus taught, and brings us peace.

Fr. Thomas Foudy
September 19, 1941– May 19th 2019
Father Thomas Flannan Foudy was born September 19, 1941
in the town of Lahinch in County Clare (Ireland). Tom was
the youngest of 14 children born to John and Nora (Galvin).
His father worked as a farmer, while his mother worked in the
home. When he was 13, his father passed away. Tom attended
the local elementary school – at a time when the public
schools were run by the Church. He played hurling and Irish
football. He boarded at St. Flannan’s College in Ennis. After
graduating in 1961, he entered the seminary at St. Patrick’s
College in Thurles (County Tipperary).
After six years of study, Fr. Foudy was ordained a priest for
the Diocese of Miami on June 10, 1967 in the Cathedral of the
Assumption. At the time, St. Augustine and Miami were the
only dioceses in Florida. The next month, he took his first
flight and left Europe for the first time. St. Timothy Church
in Miami (1967-69) was Fr. Foudy’s first assignment. He
would also serve as a parochial vicar at St. Margaret in Clewis-
ton (1969-70) and St. Anthony (1970-71). Fr. Foudy minis-
tered at St. Anthony’s with Monsignor John O’Looney, who
had arrived in Fort Lauderdale in 1929 as the only Catholic
priest in Broward County. He and O’Looney grew up in the
same parish – Immaculate Conception. The first bishop of
Miami, Coleman Carroll, sent Fr. Foudy to Rome to study at
the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in 1971, bet-
ter known as the Angelicum. After three years, he was award-
ed a Doctorate in Historical Theology. Upon his return, he
was assigned to teach at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Semi-
nary in Boynton Beach for the next 15 years. He served as a
professor and academic dean. Among his many students, Fa-
ther Foudy taught: now-Archbishop Wenski, Fr. Tywoniak,
Fr. Kiddy, Fr. Greer, Bishop Noonan, andBishop Martin Hol-
ley (Memphis). During this time, he also taught at Barry Uni-
versity during the summers.
In August 1989, Archbishop Edward McCarthy assigned Fr.
Foudy to be the third pastor of St. Coleman Church in Pom-
pano Beach. After 26 years – most of his ministry – he retired
on July 1, 2015. While the parish thrived, much of Fr.
Foudy’s focus was on St. Coleman School. Both the school’s
enrollment and facilities grew steadily. Generations of Bap-
tisms, Reconciliations, First Communions, Marriages, and
Funerals have left Fr. Foudy as an important part of many
families in the community. Parishioners honored him by nam-
ing the Parish Hall in his honor. Fr. Foudy has three surviv-
ing sisters, all live in Ireland. He has 32 nieces and nephews.
