All Eyes on Cyprus:Cyprus is the Mediterranean’s third largest island after Sardinia

and Sicily. Standing at the crossroads of three continents, it has

a history and culture stretching back more than 10,000 years.

Situated between Europe, Africa and Asia, it brings together

the history, religion, culture and civilization of its neighboring

peoples and all those who have sought to conquer it from an-

tiquity to modern times. Millions of visitors come to Cyprus every

year to learn about its civilization and culture, to explore its flora

and fauna, to visit its sights, to explore the captivating scenery,

and to enjoy the hospitality and services this destination has to

offer.

The Cyprus mystique is as much a product of its legendary

beauty as it is of millennia of competing empires, all unable to

resist the island’s strategic allure.

Its perfect location, offers an ideal starting point for the discov-

ery of other exotic locales such as the Greek Islands, Egypt and

the Middle East. But close as Cyprus may be to the world’s cen-

ter stage, it is a distinctive place that can feel blissfully apart

from it all.

Cyprus became a member of the European Union in May 2004

and has adopted the Euro as its currency in 2008. Residents of

Cyprus enjoy a crime free environment, state of the art tele-

communication and international business services, and excel-

lent healthcare and medical services.

Paralimni is the main town and the temporary administrative centre of

the district of Famagusta, also known as the “golden coast”. Protaras

is the main beach resort of Paralimni and its well known for its magnifi-

cent golden sandy beaches. As a contrast of Ayia Napa which lies few

kilometers further, Protaras is a quieter resort and as such may be more

suites for couples and families.

The resort of Protaras stretches from near to the famous ghost city of

Famagusta down to the National Park of Cape Greko. This region is fa-

mous for its long stretching sandy beaches and famous windmills that

line the landscape. As a purpose-built Cyprus resort, Protaras offers sea-

side holidays to families from the world over. With a great range of beau-

tiful sandy coves and the glorious sands of Fig Tree and Flamingo Bay

among its 3 Blue Flag beaches, it’s no surprise that Protaras grows more

popular each year. What it lacks in any real history, it makes up for in pro-

viding a manicured holiday to its many fans. Clear turquoise sea, large

hotels, cafes, bars, restaurants, and excellent water sports make this a

very popular destination.th a bustling atmosphere during the height of

summer and a more relaxing mood during lower seasons.

It is no coincidence that UNESCO included the entire city in the world

heritage list since the capital of Cyprus for 600 years in antiquity has a

unique quantity of cultural heritage sites scattered around every cor-

ner of the city. It is surrounded by quaint villages, semi-mountainous

and mountainous areas, and there are endless beaches and coves

stretching south of the city.

The small port of Kato Paphos, the Roman floor mosaics, the tombs

of the kings, the Rock of Aphrodite (Aphrodite, goddess of love and

beauty is believed to have emerged from the foaming sea), the Chris-

tian catacombs are just some of the countless sites which confirm the

ancient history of this place. Byzantine, archaeological and religious mu-

seums are scattered across the Paphos district offering countless hours

of tours and trips for visitors.

One thing that singles Paphos out are the picturesque areas outside the

city since a trip into the mountains brings one across quaint villages and

charming landscapes which are bound to both relax and revitalize visi-

tors, while also offering a different view of the island to visitors.

Larnaca, built on the ruins of Ancient Kition -a bronze trading centre in

antiquity which was later used as a fortress by the Phoenicians- is today

home to a modern city with a port and a beautiful promenade known

as Finikoudes which has become the symbol of Larnaca. Larnaca has

much to offer such as archaeological sites, galleries, mosques, mu-

seums, nature trails and of course enchanting beaches and coves.

Larnaca is also hometo the larger of the island’s two airports. The

Choirokoitia archaeological site (a UNESCO world heritage site), the Ki-

tion archaeological site, the Larnaca fortress, and the tens of church-

es and monasteries are just some of the historical treasures Larnaca has

to offer. The city museum and the St. Lazarus Byzantine Museum are two

places where ample evidence of the city’s ancient history is presented.

On offer to complement its historical sightseeing, Larnaca has its deep-

blue sea, bright sandy beaches and reliably sunny skies. With its 400-

berth marina, Larnaca is also a favored destination for visitors with pri-

vate yachts and leisure craft.

Nicosia, the island’s capital, and the only divided capital city in the

world. It harmoniously blends the concepts of ‘modern capital’ with

‘old picturesque city’ jam-packed with history. Grandiose buildings,

which house large businesses and central government buildings cou-

pled with popular shopping centers and modern cafes, are just some

of the city’s sights. The other side of Nicosia’s coin is old Nicosia with its

narrow winding lanes and the municipal market, the area inside the

Venetian stone walls, the moat and heart-shaped bastions. The Fama-

gusta Gate, one of the three entrances to the city, is an absolute must

for visitors. The Cyprus Museum (with the best collection of archaeologi-

cal finds on the island) and the Leventis Museum (showing the history of

the city of Nicosia) are some of the many sights that one can visit. The

cathedral church of St. John, the Hamam Omerye Baths (which have

won the Europa Nostra prize), the Bairaktari Mosque, the Axiothea Man-

sion are some of the locations, which add a special flavor to the history

of the island, which is everywhere visible. Outside of Nicosia tens of bike

lanes, nature trails and forest parks provide a welcome contrast to the

intense pace of the densely populated capital.
