Brothers and Sisters, It is good to be with you once again. We are coming close to the end of our liturgical year and as we do, the focus of our scriptures turn towards the end-times. In to-day’s gospel Jesus is asked when will the end of the world arrive. Next Sunday on the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, we end our year-long Sunday-by-Sunday hearing of Luke’s Gospel. Throughout the year Luke has called us to examine our lives to determine whether or not we are living as true disciples.

Today’s gospel challenges us to get involved in the world, working for the common good, justice and peace. Jesus urges his followers not to be passive, complacent or apathetic, but to be willing to take a stand to promote God’s kingdom, regardless of cost. To illustrate the words of Je-sus in today’s gospel when he says “You will be hated by all because of my name” we have the story of six Jesuit priests working at the Jesuit University of Central America in San Salvador who were shot and killed on November 16, 1989 outside their home.

Their small house was already full of bullet holes from government death squads coming past the house and shooting at them. One of those who died, the president of the university, was a great Jesuit theologian and philosopher named Ignacio Ellacuria. He once said, “The purpose of the Jesuit University in El Salvador is to promote the reign of God.” He felt it was vital to stand up against evil and oppose violence, so he said, “We’re against hunger, poverty, the death squads, but it seems like everyone is mad at us and everyone wants to kill us.”

Our own lives in this world will not last forever, but while on earth, we have a duty to be faithful wit-nesses to the message of peace and love given by Jesus. Today Jesus cautions that this will not make us popular. There is an imperative for us Christians to challenge structures of injustice and violence and to be a people of hope and love. Our readings today remind us how short and precious life is. They call us to reflect upon our lives, our mistakes, sins and bleak times, and they urge us to look ahead to see where we are headed and ask ourselves: What do we need to do to get ready for Christ?

When we began today I mentioned that next Sunday we would be ending our current liturgical year and hearing the last of our Sunday-by-Sunday readings from Luke’s Gospel. Luke is perhaps my favorite gospel writer. In this past year of reading this gospel we began with shepherds receiving the good news directly from heaven and we end with a thief being welcomed by Jesus into paradise. Only in Luke’s gospel do we hear this story of forgiveness and salvation. It is a story that should give us all hope.

Also on Sunday November 20th at the 5:15 pm Mass we will close our Holy Door of Mercy as the Year of Mercy ends. If you can, come as the liturgy will be very special. Lastly I will be away from you for about 4 weeks on a mission trip with a number of companions. We ask you to keep us in prayer as we will you.

Yours in Discipleship,

Faithful

VINCENTIANCORNEREach year at Christmas me, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul adopts several of the families whom we have visit-ed throughout the year by providing Christmas gi s for the children and food for the families. We also provide slippers, toiletry items and toilet paper for many of our senior clients who are not able to afford these items.

Thanks to your contribu ons last year, the SVdP 2015 Christmas Adopt-a-Family program successfully adopted 48 families, including 133 children, 38 adults and 5 seniors. It is a rewarding experience for the SVdP volunteers to

see the smiles on the faces of the children and the tears in the mother’s eyes when we arrive with the wrapped gi s and food for the holidays. Please call 683-0800 ext 17 if you are interested in adop ng one of our families for Christmas this year. Please leave your name and phone number and a SVdP volunteer will return your call. If you are not able to adopt a family on your own but would like to make a contribu on, please include a note with your dona on payable to St. Vincent de Paul in the yellow envelopes provided in the pew. Food and toiletry items may be deposited in the metal bins at the side and rear doors of the church. Please keep our St. Vincent de Paul clients and volunteers in your prayers. Thank you for your generous support.

RESEPECTLIFEMINISTRYRespectLife—FromConceptiontoNaturalDeath! Archbishop Jose Gomez recently stated, "California legalized the practice of assisted suicide earlier this year. In the months that followed, abus-es have already been seen, including a terminally ill woman being denied insurance coverage for a doctor-recommended chemotherapy treatment, but being told that her insurance would cover drugs for suicide. “We must con-tinue to oppose assisted suicide as an unjust and dangerous public policy.” Archbishop Gomez said. “It gives ‘end of life options’ to those who already have the privilege of good health care. But for the poor, it will make suicide by pre-scription the ‘recommended’ or only option. In fact, this year’s California budget includes $2.3 million to subsidize giving lethal drugs to the poor through the Medi-Cal sys-tem.” Archbishop Gomez concluded his re lections by emphasiz-ing the importance of prayer, encouraging the faithful to “ask our Blessed Mother Mary, the Health of the Sick, to help us build a new culture of conscience, compassion and care.” -EWTN News Nov 2, 2016CHOOSELIFE-YOURMOMDID!

YearofMercy:PilgrimageofPrayerTHELABYRINTHPRAYERWALKNOVEMBER19,2016DuringtheYearofMercy,weareofferingtheopportunitytowalktheLabyrinthaspartofyourpilgrimageofprayer. The Labyrinth is modeled from the one in the nave of the Chartres Cathedral in France. It is an eleven circuit labyrinth from our mystical past. The labyrinth has three paths, the going in represents the Path of Letting Go, the Center is the second called the Path of Enlightenment and also a medita-tion on Creation, the third is the way out, the Path of Union. The labyrinth represents our life's journey to God and it is through our life that we come to know God. An ancient archetype, the labyrinth has found renewed use in today's world and many who walk it ind it to be a very good tool for meditation. Marianne Heames will be available during the walk times for a short presentation and to offer guidance for those who would like it. JUBILEEYEAROFMERCYNovember 13, 2016—Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time As this JubileeYearofMercy comes to an end, Jesus’ irst disciples ask what every age seems to wonder about the end of the world: “Teacher, when will this happen? What sign will there be?” (Luke 21:7). But instead of what we’d like to know, Jesus tells us what we need to know. Don’t be terri ied by natural disas-ters, human violence, personal sufferings. Because God’s mercy abounds, all is grace. “It will lead to your giving testimo-ny” (21:13). So Malachi promises “the sun of justice with its healing rays” (Malachi 3:20a); and Jesus describes how we should welcome the end: “Stand erect and raise your heads, because your redemption is at hand” (Gospel Acclamation, Luke 21:28). Rather than worrying about ourselves and the future’s perils, both Jesus’ gospel and Pope Francis’ JubileeYearof

Mercy bid us go forth to spend our lives proclaiming God’s promise of boundless mercy, but also translating God’s mercy into living deeds of unfailing compassion and enduring comfort. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Moments of Mercy for Reflection:Moments of Mercy for Reflection: Death is a difficult topic to discuss for many people, but it is something we face on a regular basis. The Church celebrates the life and memory of those who have passed from this world and reminds us of God's merciful love. There are many examples of this: at the be-ginning of November, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of All Saints and the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls); there are vigils for the deceased, funeral liturgies, rites of committal and final commendation, and prayers for the deceased and those who are mourning. All of these prayers and services help us acknowledge our grief, celebrate the life of the one who has passed away, and find solace in the loving compassion of God.

1. Throughout this month, we should commend in prayer the bodies and souls of those who have died and who may still be in need of God's mercy in purgatory (CCC, 1020-1060). Sometimes it helps to write out a list or mention specific names of those who have died. Add some of these prayers and scripture readings to your daily prayer time. 2. In addition to praying for them, we can help those who are grieving in a tangible way. Be open to listening to someone who is grieving. You could volunteer with a bereavement ministry at your parish if it has one (this usually involves helping organize funeral liturgies and/or a small reception or luncheon afterward for the family). In these small acts of mercy, we show others that the love of God is still present in their lives and their communities even though they are grieving. -USCCB

Sea abierto a escu-

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
