Who is that partridge in a pear tree anyway?
I’m sure you have all heard the Christmas carol, “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” with its haunting melody. The carol dates back to the 16th century and its precise author is unknown. It has generally been assumed to consist of twelve nonsensical verses built around a pretty melody. But in a fascinating article in Our Sunday Visitor (12/20/92), Fr. Gilhooley, a chaplain at St. Mary’s College, informs us that the carol was written by the English Jesuits of the 16th century as a catechetical device and it is far from filled with nonsensical verses. Keep in mind that this was a rather desperate and dreadful time in England and also in the Catholic Church as well...this period in history found many Catholic priests risking their lives to minister to the flock and many lay Catholics likewise risked their lives and fortunes to hear Mass and have their children baptized. Wealthy families even built hiding places, called priests’ holes, in their homes to hide priests in case their homes were raided by the secret police. During this tough time, “The Twelve Days of Christmas” was written to educate the faithful in the doctrines of the faith and yet not be obvious to the persecutors. The numbers are simply a method to help Catholics remember some basic facts. Recall the words of the song. “On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: twelve lords a leaping, eleven pipers piping, ten ladies dancing, nine drummers drumming, eight maids a milking, seven swans a swimming, six geese a laying, five golden rings, four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear tree.” Well...here is a brief explanation...
“The Twelve Days of Christmas” celebrates the official Christmas season which starts liturgically on Christmas Day and ends twelve days later on the Feast of the Epiphany. “My true love” refers to God, “me” is the individual Catholic.
The “twelve lords a leaping” are the twelve basic beliefs of the Catholic Church as outlined in the Apostles Creed. The “eleven pipers piping” are the eleven Apostles who remained faithful after the treachery of Judas. The “ten ladies dancing” are the Ten Commandments. The “nine drummers drumming” are the nine choirs of angels which in those days of class distinction were thought
important. The “eight maids a milking” are the Eight Beatitudes. The “seven swans a swimming” are the Seven Sacraments. The “six geese a laying” are the six days of creation. The “five golden rings” are the first five books of the Old Testament called the Torah which are generally considered
the most sacred and important of all the Old Testament. The “four calling birds” are the Four Gospels. The “three French hens” are the Three Persons in God or the three gifts of the Wise Men. The “two turtle doves” represent the two natures in Jesus: human and divine or the two Testaments, Old and New. The “partridge” is what brings about the previous eleven...Jesus himself, and the “pear tree”...is the Cross. So now
that we know...let's all have a wonderful, holy and blessed Christmas...and a very happy, and Spirit-filled New Year!
Blessings, Dcn. Pat Necerato
ST. SAMBROSE was of a noble family, and was governor of Milan . . 374, when a bishop was to be chosen for that great see. As the Arian heretics were many and fierce, he was present to preserve order during the election. Though only a catechumen, it was the will of God that he should himself be chosen by acclamation; and, in spite of his utmost resistance, he was baptised and consecrated. He was unwearied in every duty of a pastor, full of sympathy and charity, gentle and condescending in things indifferent, but inflexible in matters of principle. He showed his fearless zeal in braving the anger of the Empress Justina, by resisting and foiling her impious attempt to give one of the churches of Milan to the Arians, and by rebuking and leading to penance the really great Emperor Theodosius, who in a moment of irritation had punished most cruelly a sedition of the inhabitants of Thessalonica. He was the friend and consoler of St. Monica in all her sorrows, and in 387 he had the joy of admitting to the Church her son, St. Augustine. St. Ambrose died A.D. 397, full of years and of honors, and is revered by the Church of God as one of her greatest doctors.
2015 CHANGE !!! K-5
When you bring your child to the classroom or to the social hall for Faith Formation you MUST sign them in each and every week. If you attend a mass other than the one you signed up for there are no changes, We have a sign out at the church doors policy in place. PARENT/GUARDIAN must sign students in and out. Older siblings are not allowed to do this. 2015/16 Catechetical Year The staff, catechists, and I are working on a BIG Change to the times we meet for K-5 faith formation. I value your suggestions and ask that you email me your ideas. We all want the children to attend a whole Mass not coming in during the Mass. We all like the convenience of Sunday Faith Formation. We also like the idea of Saturday morning Formation. We have opened up Monday nights 6:pm to 7:30 pm to 4th and 5thgraders who have received First Holy Eucharist and wonder if you would like us to open to Monday nights to 1st- 8th grade. Please send me your thoughts.

Bendiciones,
Diacono Pat Necerato

FEAST OF FAITH
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Second Sunday of Advent December 7, 2014
Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low. — Isaiah 40:4
Have you seen Antiques Roadshow on television? People bring attic treasures to experts for appraisal and possible cash. Catholic attics, or maybe Grandma’s wall, often hold a “sick call crucifix.” It is a curiously bulky crucifix hiding a sliding panel and a secret compartment. Two tiny candles, a squeeze bottle of holy water, a stringy purple mini-stole, a tube of prayers, and some cotton balls are all hidden inside. The cross folds up to form a mini-altar that can be propped up by a sick person’s bed. All that is needed is a priest with the oil of the sick and Holy Communion. Forty years ago, when these crosses enjoyed great popularity, the sacrament of the sick was often an encounter between priest and sick person alone, and often only in a last crisis of illness. Gradually, we are reclaiming the sacrament of anointing from this minimal, hidden expression. It is celebrated more richly and more often, even in the Sunday assembly, at every stage of illness and across a wide range of human suffering. The “sick call crucifix” is not a tradition, it is a curiosity from another time, but it reminds us of true tradition: we are a people who care for our sick, who accompany them in faith, and who sustain them with an experience of Christ’s presence.

General Mass Schedule
Reflecting on God’s Word How many towns do you suppose have a newspaper called The Herald? It’s a good name for a newspaper because it refers to one who proclaims significant news. It also can refer to a person who comes before to announce what will follow, a forerunner like John. The angels who heralded the good news of Jesus’ birth fit into a long line of heralds who proclaimed that God’s promises would at last be fulfilled. This week everyone seems to be announcing good news. Isaiah and the psalmist herald and describe others heralding glad tidings. Mark proclaims “the gospel [or ‘good news’] of Jesus Christ” (Mark 1:1). He also depicts John as a herald in the tradition of Isaiah. And Peter speaks eloquently of God’s promise and patience. Can we bring ourselves to hearken to their words and believe them? Do we have any good news of our own to proclaim?
Advent Prayer
Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a wonder at
the wisdom and power of Your Father and ours. Receive my prayer as part of my service of the Lord who enlists me in
God's own work for justice.
Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a hunger for peace: peace in the world, peace in my home, peace in myself.
Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a joy responsive to the Father's joy. I seek His will so I can serve with gladness, singing
and love.
Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me the joy and love and peace it is right to bring to the manger of my Lord. Raise in me,
too, sober reverence for the God who acted there, hearty gratitude for the life begun there, and spirited resolution to serve the Father
and Son.
I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, whose advent I hail. Amen.
