FEAST OF FAITH

The Corpus Christi Procession

In the thirteenth century, a Belgian nun by the

name of Juliana had a vision: she saw the full moon sil-

very and radiant except for one dark spot. The meaning of

the vision was revealed to her: the moon was the

Church’s liturgical year, the dark spot a missing feast in

honor of the Blessed Sacrament. Today’s feast of Corpus

Christi—the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ—grew

from Juliana’s vision.

On this feast, many parishes observe the tradi-

tional Corpus Christi procession, giving honor to the

Eucharist by carrying this greatest treasure out of the

safety of our churches and into our streets. At the end of

every Mass we are not just let out, we are sent forth,

strengthened by the Eucharist, to be the Body of Christ in

the world. The Corpus Christi procession is the dismissal

writ large! We take Jesus with us, not only in our hearts,

but carried in our midst and exposed in a monstrance. It is

a public profession of faith and a blessing of the world.

Jesus walks with us on these streets that we walk day after

day, among those who know him but yearn to know him

better, and among those who do not know him. The

Eucharist is a mystery to be believed, to be celebrated—

and to be lived. —Corinna Laughlin, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi - the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. In the Gospel Jesus says,

"Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my body has eternal life." St. Paul reminds us that the bread we break is a

"participation in the body of Christ" and the cup we drink is "a participation in the blood of Christ."….. If the Eucharist

is the true Body and Blood of Jesus, I would to ask this question: Why do we take the Mass so casually? It seems like

for many people the Eucharist is no big deal. Pope Benedict addressed this issue. In the book Light of the World, jour-

nalist Peter Seewald asked the pope why, at papal Masses, he has people kneel and receive Communion on the tongue.

Here is what he said:“I am not opposed in principle to Communion in the hand; I have both administered and received

Communion in this way myself. The idea behind my current practice of having people kneel to receive Communion on

the tongue was to send a signal and to underscore the Real Presence with an exclamation point. One important reason

is that there is a great danger of superficiality precisely in the kinds of Mass events we hold at Saint Peter’s, both in the

Basilica and in the Square. I have heard of people who, after receiving Communion, stick the Host in their wallet to take

home as a kind of souvenir. In this context, where people think that everyone is just automatically supposed to receive

Communion — everyone else is going up, so I will, too—I wanted to send a clear signal. I wanted it to be clear: Some-

thing quite special is going on here! He is here, the One before whom we fall on our knees! Pay attention! This is not

just some social ritual in which we can take part if we want to."

Cudowny znak Eucharystii: został dany czeskiemu kapłanowi Piotrowi, pielgrzymującemu do Rzymu w 1263

roku .Pragnął on przy grobie swego patrona Apostoła Piotra, umocnić swoją osłabioną wiarę, zwłaszcza w obecność

krzyknął, i padł zemdlony.

IV. Wysłał on szybko tam swoich ekspertów, aby zbadali całą sprawę.

(most Słońca) nastąpiło przekazanie korporału papieżowi, który podniósł go i ukazał wszystkim wiernym. To właśnie

wydarzenie dało początek procesjom ku czci Ciała i Krwi Pańskiej…… Święto Bożego Ciała dotarło do Polski w 1320

roku, czyli w czasach króla Władysława Łokietka. W naszej polskiej tradycji to święto miało związek z odwróceniem
