Benefice of Shepshed and Oaks in Charnwood
British Anglican Cursillo Council
Revd Canon Cynthia Hebden
During recent national elections Revd Canon Cynthia Hebden was successfully elected as National Spiritual Director to the British Anglican Cursillo Council. Votes were cast Nationally by each of the Secretariat (Committee) for each Diocese, with just one vote for their favoured candidate and the result was decided on a simple majority. We offer her our warmest congratulations. She will succeed the current BAC National Spiritual Director Rev’d Hugh Burgess. Hugh was commissioned by National President, Lyn Radcliffe at the BACC AGM held in Barnsley on 11th May, 2013.
REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY 8th November
At their September meeting the Worship Team discussed the
Remembrance Day service and the use of the television broadcast as in
the previous 2 years. It was decided in view of the
change of service time to revert to the previous pattern and hold our own remembrance in the South transept chapel after the main
10.00 am Eucharist.

MINISTERIAL
MUSINGS I was half listening to Radio 4 the
other afternoon, when a piece of
radio journalism caught my
attention. It was about an
interview with an ordinary Italian
man (an optician or something like
that) who liked to go out sailing in
his boat. As he often did, he was
out sailing with a friend, but little
did he expect the sight he would
encounter. The first he knew was a
sound of crying, which he initially
took to be a bird or something. But
as he looked out over the water, he
realised the sea was seemingly
filled with people, crying out for
help. They were refugees,
struggling to survive after their
dinghy had capsized. This man’s
heart immediately went out to
them. I was struck that his first
thought was ‘how can I save them
all?’ There were too many for just
him and of course he radioed for
help, but he saved 42 people
himself. He described how weak
they were, many vomiting as they
were pulled from the water, their
strength all but gone. What also
struck me was the interviewer’s
description of the man’s actions as
he recounted his experience. How
he unconsciously rubbed his leg at
the most painful recollections,
forever scarred by what he had
witnessed.
The sheer enormity of the refugee
crisis is overwhelming and in the
huge numbers it is easy to lose
sight of the true human cost. But
this story reminded me of the
human stories that are at the heart
of what is happening. Human
stories of each and every individual
refugee. And human stories of each
and every person who encounters
the individual stories of these very
refugees and who is forever
changed by the encounter. Like
that Italian man and the people he
rescued. For each and every person
is made in the image of God and is
beloved of God. And God is
intimately interested in and part of
their story, whether they know it or
not. And if that is so, as followers
of Jesus, who came to earth to be
an intimate part of our human
story, we should be as interested
as our Lord was. And as active as
he was.
Page 3
This means we are called to
recognise that the refugee crisis is
not one story, but thousands upon
thousands of unique individual
stories. Our hearts should be
moved by that knowledge, just as
our Lord’s was moved by the
individual stories he encountered.
Moreover, in this time of
Remembrance, as we recall those
who have died in the World wars of
the past, as well as the wars of the
present, we remember that each
person who has fallen in war was a
unique human being, a unique
story too, beloved of God. Not just
one of the horrendous number of
dead that arise through human
folly. We say, ‘lest we forget’ and
yet the continuing crises and wars
show that too many of us in the
younger generations have
forgotten the lessons of our
forebears. Let us pray that we may
one day learn and find the ways
that stop wars. That stop the
human cost of death and
displacement from home and
family.
But in the meantime, let us pray
for those caught up in war and
those who flee it as refugees. And
let us act in whatever way we can.
Let us tell our government that we
will offer compassion and a place
for those in need. Let us support
those agencies that work to help
those crying out for help, such as
Christian Aid, itself set up 70 years
ago to offer support to European
refugees after the Second World
War. Let us show what it means to
be a Christian and to follow the
example of Jesus who reached out
to the lost, the oppressed and the
poor. Let us pray and let us act.
For in so doing we proclaim the
Kingdom of God.
Yours in Christ,
Rev’d Ed.

St. Botolph's Church Taster Day
Following the success of our first Taster Day on 1st march 2014, and in
response to a request from a group of young families, we are
organising an open day on Saturday March 12th. from 9am - 1pm.
In doing so we hope to highlight the variety of activity that takes place
at St. Botolph's. We are asking all leaders to discuss with their groups
the most efficient way of demonstrating their Christian activities.
A letter of invitation with a logistics questionnaire should be winging its
way to you in the near future. If you haven't received one by October
1st then please contact me or the office. We want everyone to be
included.
From feedback participation in practical activities and audio - visual
techniques are firm favourites.
Please give this prayerful thought as to how you can promote our
gospel values to our wider community.
many thanks

St Botolph’s Mother’s Union Report At our meeting in October, Jane Payne told us of her journey to Jordan
last year illustrated with many photos. We were surprised to hear how
small Jordan is (half the size of England) but how large the old city of
Petra was. Also to see where Jesus was baptised by John even though
the route of the river has moved over the years but Petra itself was the
highlight of the trip.
Afterwards 27 of us enjoyed a wonderful chicken casserole and fruit in
jelly thanks to Doris and her team.
At our next meeting on 11th November we shall be decorating and filling
small Christmas stockings for the Christmas Fayre. Lasagne and garlic
bread for lunch so if you would like to join us please let me know a week
before.

New service pattern – 6pm Eucharist. The Worship Team discussed this issue at their last meeting.
There seems to have been some misunderstanding about the pattern of
the 6.00pm Eucharist service on the 1st Sunday of the month. Thus the
10.00am service moved to the later time, therefore things should be set
out and proceed as that service does: i.e. using screens and sung liturgy
etc.
There is a social evening to be held for servers to ‘touch base’ and make
sure all is going smoothly.

St Botolph’s record breaking win
The children at St Botolph’s are celebrating for the 6th year running after winning the Shepshed library summer challenge!
Shepshed Library hosted their annual summer holiday reading challenge inspiring children to continue their reading throughout the summer break. This year’s theme was Record Breakers and it certainly proved to be a record breaking success for St Botolph’s.
Reading for pleasure and story time is a core element of St Botolph’s ethos and so the children are always keen to get lost in a book even when they’re not in school. Phil Marriott, Chair of Governors, who also has governor responsibility for English in the school, said, “The children’s love of books and story time play an important part in their love of learning. It’s inspiring to see just how many completed the reading challenge throughout the summer.” Every year Mrs Pepper, Head Teacher, encourages all of the children to be a part of the challenge and represent St Botolph’s. This year was no different and almost 50% of the children completed the Record Breaker Summer 2015 challenge. The children were overjoyed with their success and winning the cup again for the 6th year running. Mrs Pepper said, “We are so proud of the children showing us just how much they enjoy reading. Throughout the school we promote reading for pleasure and this 6th successive win demonstrates that the children continue to be inspired.”

Men’s Fellowship November 2015
I have been somewhat remiss of late in reporting on the activities of the Men’s fellowship, so thought it was past time I gave some idea of what we have been up to! At our summer AGM there was definite appetite to maintain our men’s fellowship, which is open to all men to be a part of. Thus we continue to arrange talks, visits and opportunities for simple fellowship. In the last few months we have enjoyed a talk from Richard Tabberer on his work and travels, along with a bring and share supper, joined in with the Quiz Night at the Pied Bull and shared food together, once again at the Pied Bull. Our last trip was a real highlight as Steve Dawson and Bob treated us to a visit around the Scania training centre to learn about the compa-ny and see the inner working of the trucks and coaches they manufac-ture and maintain. We learned so much, got to sit in the big trucks and get an insight into the amazing engineering that goes into these ma-chines – and I for one will have a much greater appreciation of all those trucks I see on the road! For November we plan to go to the Nottingham Dog Racing, which we did last year and which offered us a lot of fun and fellowship. It does not require any betting if you don’t wish to (a small bet is included as part of the entrance deal we opt for!), as we spent more time talking and eating the pie and chips than anything else. So if any men would like to join us, let me (Rev’d Ed) know or put your name on the sign-up sheet at the back of church. The fellowship is open to all men and we are always keen to welcome new members to join us. Do contact me if you want to know more. Rev’d Ed.

A LETTER FROM JESUS
Oh how my heart cries out.
With tears for aches unseen.
How I wish to bring you comfort.
To make you wholly clean.
But each time that I’ve called to you.
You’ve turned and walked away.
Please my child, don’t do that now.
Please hear these words I say.
My arms they wish to hold you close.
My voice to say I’m here.
I will be with you each step.
You need have no fear.
And though I know you don’t know how.
It was I who stood the pain.
Through my faith my child, you will learn.
It was for love that I was slain.
And if but you could see my face.
Then you would know inside.
The joy that I could give to you.
If you’ll just let my love abide.
My plea to you is “COME TO ME.”
I’m calling once again.
I’m knocking at your door.
Please Let My Love Come In.

A Witness summary on the Healing Ministry
It seems impossible that to reflect on 21st October 2005, 10 years ago, I was diag-
nosed with having a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and this ultimately became a
significant chapter in our lives.
I had had a dull ache, i.e. post cramp, in my right calf and thought a restful holiday
from 9th – 16
th October in Majorca (Half Term) would enable recovery – wrong.
During the week Monday 17th to Friday 21
st October 2005 the pain in my calf pro-
gressive got worse and so it was a visit to the Drs, who then at 5.30 pm made ar-
rangements for me to attend the Leicester Royal Infirmary immediately as he sus-
pected a DVT. The next day, Saturday 22nd
, the reading at the prayer group was
Mark 5:21-24a – Jairus daughter
During that following week-end we learned of one of Thelma’s former Brownies,
then 9 years old, being taken ill while on a family holiday in Spain. The hospital ad-
vised that the child had fallen unconscious into a diabetic coma and had been
placed on a life support machine with very little hope of recovery and it was only a
matter of time.
The child was subsequently flown back to the UK while still unconscious and taken
directly to the LRI where the diagnosis was confirmed again with very little chance
of recovery.
During this experience, I was continually thinking about this young child and be-
came increasingly aware that she would regain consciousness. On Tuesday 25th
her parents were faced with a decision concerning switching off her life-support
system. I was unsure if it was wishful thinking or a premonition but I was convinced
that this should not happen as she would regain consciousness. How can you con-
vince anyone this to be the case when all you have is an unqualified point of view?
In the event it was decided to leave it a little longer.
That same week I was on a treatment of Heparin injections at 8.00 am each day for
expediency before being prescribed with warfarin once blood tests confirmed the
dosage.
Each day we left something different at her bedside, initially s “Get Well” card with a
personalised prayer for her recovery. Thelma then got her Brownies to make a tape
recording of songs, jokes and good wishes for her. This was left on Thursday and
her parents played it to her regularly and read the prayer from the card to her each
night before returning home. Eventually on Saturday 29th October the decision to
switch the Life Support Machine of was taken but the result confounded the staff
and was beyond expectation as this little girl, albeit still unconscious, started to
Page 25
breath for herself.
Within the Healing group, that began in January 2006 nearly 10 years ago, we
started under the direction of Rev, Peter Alcock and his wife Dorothy and soon be-
gan to become aware of the Gifts of the Spirit 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 as follows:
“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a mes-
sage of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit,
to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to an-
other prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in dif-
ferent kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.”
I now believe that I was privileged to have experienced a combination of wisdom
and knowledge through faith that she would recover; some of the Gifts of the Spirit.
It was this that was responsible for my enthusiasm for St Botolph’s to form a Heal-
ing Group. For the next six and a half weeks her condition stabilised and my next
experience was when I awoke around 4.30 am on the morning of Wednesday 14th
December 2005 to the words.
Open her eyes, Lord, and let her see Jesus,
to reach out and touch him to know and to love him;
open her ears, Lord, and help her to listen;
O, open her eyes, Lord, and let her to see Jesus!
That evening we went to Emmanuel Church Loughborough to listen to the introduc-
tion to the Diocese of ‘Shaped by God!’, (also now 10 years old). At the end and be-
fore we headed home Rev Canon Cynthia met us outside and asked us to ask her
about this young girl as she too had been making regular visits to her in the LRI. It
was a difficult situation but Cynthia insisted we asked her about the situation which
we did do eventually and we were overjoyed when she told us that this little child
had opened her eyes that day to which my reply was, recalling the above, “I know!”
What could possibly follow? A few weeks later she uttered her first word which was
in response to the prayer in her get well card and was “Amen.” Over the months
and years ahead she continued to respond to treatment and make good progress
even returning to her school cohort and completed her ‘O’ and ‘A’ level studies. Alt-
hough her recovery has not been100% she was well supported by her family and is
able to walk with some assistance. In the near future she will celebrate her 20th
Birthday.
I fully recovered from my DVT and I took part in The Flora London Marathon in
April 2007 raising funds for Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF) with sponsor-
ship amounting to more than £3,500. Dave and Thelma Whittington

Dear Friends,
Church Urban Fund have been busy finalising details for an exciting
community event to be held throughout Advent. To make it work, we are
looking to our network for support.
The Advent Sleepout Challenge 2015
This Advent we will be asking people all over
England to give up a night of comfort and organise
their own sponsored sleepouts with their friends,
families, churches and community groups.
Christmas is a time for sharing, spreading love and
showing others that we care. The Advent Sleepout
Challenge will bring communities together and give
hope and support to thousands of people across England.
Transforming a space into a stable
Over 2000 years ago, Mary and Joseph were forced
to sleep in a stable and we want as many people
as possible to take this as inspiration to create
their own Advent ‘stable’. This could be in
churches, community halls, scout huts, local
schools or even garden sheds. How you transform
the space is up to you, but most importantly, we
want everyone to come together to have fun, share the experience and
of course, raise as much sponsorship money as possible.
How to get involved
We will be launching all information including a website and resources at
the beginning of September. Register your interest now by emailing our
team at [email protected] or call 0207 898 1091 for more information.
In September we will be back in touch with all the resources that you
can share within your church and community.
We need lots of people to get involved to make this a success and to
transform more lives.
Best regards,
The Church Urban Fund Team
