Student Vote- 2019

On Friday, Oct. 18th, every student in the school will have an opportunity to participate in a Student Vote regarding the 2019 Federal Election. Student Vote is an authentic learning program that provides students with the opportunity to experience the voting process firsthand and practice the habits of active and informed citizenship. The polling station for our students will take place in the learning commons and the voting process will be facilitated by students in Grade 9 Social Studies. We are pleased to give students the opportunity to have their voice heard. The student results will be shared after the Federal Election results are announced and this will be shared with the students. CCSD and the Calgary Flames are excited to once again offer students, staff and families discounted tickets to games in November, December and January. For every ticket sold, $10 goes back to St. Bonaventure or the school of your choice. Schools that purchase fewer than 20 tickets will have their donations pooled and donated to the Calgary Catholic Education Foundation (CCEF). This program continues to be a great fundraiser for Calgary Catholic; last year, we raised more than $7,000 for our schools and CCEF. Purchase your tickets here: ccsdinfo.ca/FlamesFundraiser Game dates include: November 13 against the Stars December 5 against the Sabres January 9 against the Wild.

Gr. 7, 8 and 9 Spanish Class going to the Spanish Theatre Production of Momo- Oct. 18th

Gato Negro was established in 2013 by producer, director and actress, Vicky Velasco. Vicky ran a Spanish theatre residency at St. Bonaventure School last year with our students. Gato Negro’s mission is to support and promote Spanish language and Latin-American culture. It was the first Spanish theatre group in Calgary and in six years of theatrical activity, it has produced seven successful plays. These plays are “Saltó Atras” (A Jump Backwards) in 2013 and 2018, “Entrelazos” (Intertwining) in 2014, “Inmigrante Soy Yo” (Immigrant, I am - original) in 2014, “Sueño de una noche de Verano” (A Midsummers Night’s Dream) in 2017, and “Quimeras” (Fantasies) in 2017. These productions have had great acceptance in the Latin-American community as well as the bilingual programs in the Calgary Public and Catholic School systems.

This year, Gato Negro will be presenting a new production, inspired by the novel Momo, by Michael Ende, the author of the classic tale, “The Never-Ending Story.” Ende’s message to balance societal expectations with our need to connect with family, nature, and our creative side is just as important today as when the novel was written in.

For the first time, Gato Negro will be combining the latest in technology to include both English subtitles and visual effects, thus enhancing the production and creating an unforgettable experience that individual of all ages will enjoy. Students from St. Bonaventure’s Spanish program will be spending the afternoon attending this production and we are excited for the opportunity.

Counsellor Column…

Oct. Newsletter-Counsellor’s Column

As shared in our first newsletter, this column is devoted to building our understanding of growth mindset. The messages that young people get (and see) from adults at home and school will greatly impact their own perspectives.

If you missed the first video…please take a look at it (here)! Do you share this expert’s opinion about middle school being a great time for practicing failure? How do you manage your own failures? Your kiddos learn from you!

This month’s video looks at the power of the word YET. More specifically at the power of “not yet” versus the tyranny of NOW. Imagine a report card, instead of listing a grade, listing “not yet”! Check out this informative video with Carol Dweck herself (the researcher who brought us this concept of growth versus fixed mindsets)…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiiEeMN7vbQ

Please let me know if you’d like to chat about any of these concepts!

Kindly,

Mrs. Badour

WHY?The gift of publicly funded Catholic education in Alberta is a true blessing. As a community we are called in gratitude, faith and action to ensure that our children and future generations continue to learn and grow in our Catholic schools.

WHAT?The mission of GrACE is to inspire, invigorate and embolden the spirit of Catholic education in order to unite, engage, educate and communicate with one voice on its behalf. GrACE is a partnership of stakeholders resolutely committed to Catholic education within the province of Alberta.

WHO? YOU!GrACE invites all those committed to Catholic education, through the unity of the Holy Spirit, to be advocates and witnesses for our schools’ successes and their future.

WHERE?In your homes, your neighborhoods, your schools and your parishes. Watch for and get involved with your local GrACE team. Tell your stories of Catholic education. Let your voice be heard.

WHEN? NOW!Every day is a celebration of Catholic education. Let us be grateful for our blessings and commit our support.

"The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen"Romans 16:24

Catholic education affirms parents as their children’s primary educators and respects the rights of parents to choose the school that meets their needs

In Catholic schools, it is our deepest desire to ensure that every child knows and experiences the love of God through the witness of their community

Principles of diversity and inclusion are central in the teachings of the Catholic Church and permeate all aspects and curriculum in a Catholic school

180,000 students currently attend Catholic schools in Alberta

Alberta is one of three provinces in Canada with publicly funded Catholic education. Ontario and Saskatchewan are the other two.

Catholic education in Alberta is 158 years old

An organized effort of public school lobbyists are attempting to disrupt Catholic education in our province. Your engagement; your advocacy; your voice is vital.
