The month of February has been very good to St. Bonaventure. Since 2016, the Bonnies are 30-8 in February and have won 18 of the past 21 games during the month. The Bonnies have not lost back-to-back February games in five years. While playing without two members of its starting lineup, the Bonnies dropped back-to-back games at home to begin the season. St. Bonaventure has not lost consecu- tive games at home multiple different times in the same year since the 2014-15 season. Freshman Justin Winston is on this week’s Atlantic 10 Weekly Honor Roll after averaging 16.0 ppg and shot 52 percent from the floor including a career-high 20 points in a win at Saint Joseph’s Feb. 11. Osun Osunniyi’s 9.3 rebounds per game during Atlantic 10 play rank fourth in the conference. Kyle Lofton is the only player in the Atlantic 10 to aver- age over six assists per game this year and the only A-10 player to hand out double-digit assists three different times this season. St. Bonaventure 66, Richmond 57 (1/26/19)From there, the score remained close. It was a 54-53 Bona lead when Nelson Kaputo made a three-pointer from the corner in front of his team bench with 3:00 to play to give the Bonnies some breathing room.

Osun Osunniyi then blocked a shot by Richmond’s Grant Golden, and on the other end of the court Osunniyi slammed home a lob pass from Courtney Stockard to extend the Bonnies’ lead to 59-53 with 2:36 remaining.

Kyle Lofton had 21 points in the win while Osunniyi hauled in 11 rebounds.

SERIES HISTORYThis will be the 27th meeting in a series that Richmond leads 17-9. The Bonnies have won the last three games, though, and four of the past five meetings with the Spiders.

The Bonnies started that stretch with an 84-68 win at the Reilly Center Jan. 31, 2016 and have reached 80 points or more in three of the past five meetings.

RICHMOND NOTES• The Spiders have won five games in a row, including a signature win over crosstown rival VCU, 77-59, last week-end. • Richmond entered the week with four players averag-ing double digits including Blake Francis (17.2 ppg) who ranks third in the A-10, along with Jacob Gilyard (13.7 ppg), Grant Golden (13.1 ppg) and Nick Sherod (12.8 ppg). • Gilyard has been a defensive presence for the Spiders, averaging 3.2 steals per game, first in the A-10 • As a team, Richmond is shooting the ball well at 47 percent from the field (second in the A-10) and 37 percent from deep (third in the A-10).

TRENDING NUMBERS 10 – A win Saturday would give Bona six straight years of 10 or more A-10 wins, lengthening the longest active streak in the league.10.4 – The Bonnies have posted the lowest amount of turnovers per game during A-10 play of any league team (10.4).34.6% – St. Bonaventure has shot nearly 35 percent from distance during the conference season, ranking third among all A-10 teams. 59 – In 17 victories this year, the Bonnies are allowing 59 points per game to opponents. In nine losses, they’ve surren-dered on average 77.8. 64.4% – Osun Osunniyi is shooting 64.4% from the floor in his 10 A-10 games, best in the A-10. Dayton’s Obi Toppin is second (63.0%).73.2% – The Bonnies are shooting better than 73 percent at the line for the season as a team, ranking fourth in the A-10.

Last Game Recap - DAVIDSON 93, BONNIES 64The Bonnies (17-9, 9-4 A-10) built much of their impressive start to conference play, which came one win shy of matching the best in program history, on lock down defense, but the Wild-cats sank shots early and often to build a large lead during the opening 20 minutes.

The Bonnies led early, opening a narrow 16-13 advantage be-hind eight quick points from Osun Osunniyi.

Davidson then embarked on a 20-2 run that gave the Wildcats a 33-18 cushion with 7:30 left in the half. Wildcat shooters went 8-for-14 from beyond the arc during the first half and shot 57 percent in all from the floor to build a 47-28 lead at the break.

YOUTHFUL BONNIESFor the first time since the 2010-11 season, the Bonnies boast just one senior on their roster - center Amadi Ikpeze. In fact, Ikpeze is the only junior or senior on the roster who entered the year having played a single game with the program: Bona’s sole junior is junior college transfer Matt Johnson.

But, in the words of head coach Mark Schmidt: “We have old sophomores.”

Last season, the Bonnies were the only Atlantic 10 team with three freshmen in the starting lineup.

WIN 300 FOR COACH SCHMIDTSt. Bonaventure head coach Mark Schmidt earned another career milestone when the Bonnies held on for a dramatic, 66-65 victory at Middle Tennessee on Dec. 21. The win was his 300th as a head coach. St. Bonaventure’s all-time leader in coaching victories, he registered 82 wins as head coach in six seasons at Robert Morris from 2001-07 before taking the Bonaventure job in 2007. Since taking the reins in the Enchanted Mountains, Coach Schmidt has compiled a .560 win percentage during the past 13 seasons. In reaching Win No. 300, Schmidt joins fellow Atlantic 10 coaches Bob McKillop, Keith Dambrot, Dave Paulsen, Chris Mooney and Travis Ford as 300-game winners. Among those coaches, however, only Mooney has more victories while coaching in the Atlantic 10.

WE ARE ST. BONAVENTUREThe appropriate reference for our institution is St. Bonaventure University - the term “St. Bonnies” is an unacceptable University reference.

BONNIES BEST A-10 STARTS• The Bonnies started A-10 play with four consecutive wins, giving the

Bonnies their third 4-0 start in program history, matching the 2015-16 and 1999-2000 teams. The Bonnies matched their best 12-game start at 9-3, equaling the 2015-16 and 1982-83 squads as the only others in SBU history to reach that mark (the Bonnies joined the A-10, then known as the Eastern 8, for the 1979-80 season). With this year’s 9-4 record, the Bonnies now have a .680 winning percentage (70-33) in A-10 play since 2014-15.

on the Bonnies. When he’s played 18 minutes or more this season, the Bonnies are 16-1 including 9-1 in conference. A look at the Bonnies in those 17 games vs. the rest of the season: Category w/ Osunniyi w/o Osunniyi (less than 18 min) Scoring defense 60.1 ppg 75.7 ppg

JUSTIN’S JUST GETTING STARTED• Freshman Justin Winston has been playing his best ball of the season

as of late. The former four-star recruit posted his career high of 20 points Feb. 11 at Saint Joseph’s, besting the 19 he scored in a win over Rutgers in November. A fixture in the starting lineup for most of the season, Winston averaged 11.0 points while shooting better than 52 percent during Bona’s five-game winning streak Jan. 29-Feb. 11 in-cluding a career-high five assists vs. Fordham Jan. 29 and career-best seven rebounds Feb. 1 vs. George Mason. He has committed just one turnover in the past four games. He is on this week’s Atlantic 10 Weekly Honor Roll after averaging 16.0 ppg in two games last week.

SPREADING THE WEALTH• St. Bonaventure has had a different player in the spotlight of nearly

every one of its victories this season. Tuesday at Saint Joseph’s it was Justin Winston with a career effort, but for the season six different players have led the Bonnies in game scoring - Jaren English, Kyle Lofton, Dominick Welch, Osun Osunniyi, Justin Winston and Alejandro Vasquez. Each of those players has led Bona in scoring multiple times this year.

WELL-ROUNDED WELCH• Sophomore Dominick Welch continues to expand his game, filling the

stat sheet throughout the year. He narrowly missed his fifth double-double of the year Feb. 11 at Saint Joseph’s, finishing with nine points and a career-high seven assists along with seven rebounds and three steals.

EXCELLENT ENGLISH• Sophomore Jaren English turned in perhaps his best week as a

Bonnie during the week of Feb. 5-9 when in two games he averaged 18.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists. In a victory over GW on Feb. 6, he finished with a career-high 21 points, adding six rebounds and two assists while shooting 7-for-14 from the floor and 3-for-4 from three. Last Saturday at Duquesne, he delivered again with 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

100 YEARS ON“The basket ball craze has struck the college at last. It was rather slow in coming, but when it did strike, it hit hard ... If we are to judge by the enthusiasm and all the talk that is going the rounds, we have several players of stellar transcendancy in our midst. This will, no doubt, result in a great many spirited games.” - The Laurel, March 1901

• Though basketball existed at St. Bonaventure dating back to at least 1901, a decade following the invention of the game by James Naismith, the first intercollegiate team suited up for the 1919-20 campaign following several years of intramural games and starts and stops due to lack of a proper court.

• The construction of Butler Gymnasium (still standing on campus today footsteps from the Reilly Center) put the wheels in motion for intercollegiate play, but its comple-tion was halted due to World War I. Finally, the first game was played Dec. 11, 1919 in the newly constructed Butler Memorial Gymnasium as the first Bona team defeated a group of alumni, 29-18. The season continued with games vs. Seton Hall, Cathedral College, Grove City College, Westminster, St. Francis of Loretto, Canisius, and Duquesne, with a season record of 6-10. Richard Phelan was the first coach after joining St. Bonaventure College as a professor from Niagara.

BONNIES BASKETBALL AT 100• Though records of basketball at St. Bonaventure go back

to at least 1901, the first official intercollegiate season was 1919-20

• The Bonnies have sponsored a team every year but 1943-44 when the program was halted due to World War II

• The Bonnies have 1,356 victories all-time and a winning percentage of .563

• The program has registered 65 winning seasons, 43 1,000-point scorers and 33 players drafted by the NBA

• In all, St. Bonaventure has recorded 16 seasons of 20+ wins and 24 post-season appearances as well as 61 players who have been named Atlantic 10 All-Conference

• St. Bonaventure has been to the NCAA Tournament seven times – including the 1970 Final Four – and the NIT 16 times – highlighted by a 1977 national championship

• The Bonnies became a national powerhouse during the 1950s, posting a .686 winning percentage during the decade – ranking 17th in the nation over that period

• The program only grew in prominence – a .724 winning percentage during the 1960s ranked 12th nationally while the team rose as high as No. 3 in the national Top 25 multiple times

• The program had a .600 winning percentage or better in the 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s

• The Bonnies are in another “golden era” under head coach Mark Schmidt – the program had a .599 winning percentage during the 2010s and their average of 19 wins per year is the highest of any decade in program history

• St. Bonaventure is one of 38 schools to both reach a Final Four and win an NIT championship

• St. Bonaventure’s 99-game home winning streak at the Olean Armory from 1948-61 is the second-longest home court win streak in NCAA Division I history behind only Kentucky’s 129 from 1943-55

LOFTON’S LOFTY NUMBERS• Sophomore Kyle Lofton is quickly becoming one of the nation’s top point

guards. Lofton leads the A-10 in assists per game (6.1 apg - no other player is over 6.0), total assists (158) and minutes per game (38.5 mpg). Nationally, he ranks 17th in total assists, 21st in apg, 25th in assist/turnover ratio and fourth in minutes.

• During A-10 play, Lofton ranks third in the league by shooting over 44 percent from beyond the arc.

• He handed out a career-high 11 assists in the win over Hofstra Dec. 7 and matched that with 11 more Dec. 14 vs. Gannon and again Dec. 18 vs. Niagara. He’s the first Bonnies player to register double-digit assists in three straight games since Marques Green achieved the feat in 2003. Lofton is in good company – Green today ranks as Bona’s all-time assists leader (8th in A-10 history) with 657 and was selected to the program’s All-Time Team.

• He has finished with six or more assists 21 times so far during his Bonaventure career.

• Lofton has played 36 or more minutes in 45 of 60 career games played and entered the year with the most minutes played last season of any returning A-10 player. He’s played the full 40 11 times this year.

ENGLISH’S ENTRANCE• Sophomore Jaren English has been sidelined for seven games due to

injury (hand injury suffered in preseason cost him the first five games, then a concussion forced him out of the first two A-10 games), but the Bonnies have been at their best with him in the lineup.

• English, who was in line for a potential starting role before his injury, made his Division I debut Nov. 26. Since his debut, he has started all but one game played.

• English is second on the Bonnies in A-10 play with 12.8 points per game. He has shot 44% from the floor in A-10 action. He tallied a career-high 21 points in a Feb. 5 win over GW, besting the 17 points he had at No. 7/7 Dayton Jan. 22.

• In the Boca Classic games in Florida, he averaged 36 minutes including his first double-digit scoring effort of 12 points in a win over San Diego Dec. 1. He displayed his ability to shoot from long range, going 4-for-5 from distance Dec. 7 vs. Hofstra. Returning from concussion symptoms, he posted 16 points and a career-best six assists in a win over Fordham Jan. 11.

• A sophomore transfer, English played last season at Ranger CC in Texas under head coach Billy Gillispie. While there, he helped the Rangers to a berth in the NJCAA Division I championship game.

‘SHOON SWATS Osun Osunniyi returned to action Nov. 26 vs. Mercer after missing all but 11 minutes of the first five games due to a leg injury sustained in the opener Nov. 5. A concussion cost him games at VCU and Dayton as well as vs. URI. • He already ranks in the program’s top five for career blocks in just his first 50 collegiate games. This season, he’s had

five or more blocks four times - vs. San Diego (6), at Middle Tennessee (5), at GW (5) and at George Mason (5).• He ranked sixth in the nation with 2.6 blocks per game last year and led all NCAA Division I freshmen with 92 blocks,

the program freshman record for swats.• Against Hofstra Dec. 7 Osunniyi hauled in 16 rebounds and a season-high 18 boards Jan. 8 at George Mason. His

career-high is 22 boards set last year at Duquesne.• Osunniyi is averaging 2.8 blocks per game through the first 53 games of his Bonnies career. That would rank first

overall in Bonnies program history – Bona’s all-time blocks leader Caswell Cyrus averaged 2.5 blocks per game over his 114-game career between 1996-2000, finishing with 289 swats.

• In games where Osunniyi has played at least 18 minutes, the Bonnies are +7.8 in rebounding margin, a total that would lead the A-10 over a full season - and by a wide margin. Saint Louis currently leads the A-10 at +5.0. The Bonnies are 16-1 when he plays at least 18 minutes.

• If eligible for the season leaders in the A-10, Osunniyi’s 9.1 rpg would rank fourth in the league while his 2.7 blocks per game would rank third.

DOWNTOWN DOM• Bonnies sophomore Dominick Welch finished non-conference play second among all Atlantic 10 players with 38 three-

pointers. Currently, he ranks third in the league for the year in shots from long range. He has hit at least one 3 in 23 of 26 games this year.

• More than just a perimeter shooter, Welch also ranks second on the team in rebounding (6.6 rpg). He ranks 14th among all A-10 players in rebounding and tallied a career-high of 14 rebounds Jan. 29 at Fordham. In conference play, his aggressiveness on the boards has led to 7.5 rpg and a top-10 standing in the league. He is second on the team on the offensive glass with 46 offensive rebounds this year.

• In 25 games last year, he hit 43 3-pointers and shot 36 percent from distance. His 43 3’s were a team-high during the ’17-18 campaign. He surpassed that total in his 16th game this season.

• He finished his high school career as the all-time leading scorer in boys Western New York history (2,376 points at Cheektowaga).

SENIOR LEADER• Senior Amadi Ikpeze is the team’s “grizzled veteran,” the only senior on the squad. He dropped over 25 pounds in the

offseason, working to improve after a disappointing junior season. He ranks top 20 all-time in program history in games played.

• Ikpeze’s 42 offensive rebounds are third on the team this year. He had a career-high 11 rebounds vs. URI Jan. 25.• Ikpeze has been a part of 80 victories during his Bona career thus far.

BEASTS ON THE BOARDS• St. Bonaventure ranks second in the A-10 in rebounding margin (+3.4) for the

season. • In A-10 play, Bona is +5.2 on the boards, twice as good as second-place

Saint Louis’ +3.5.• The Bonnies are 15-2 when winning the battle of the boards this season. HEALTHY CHANGES EVERYTHING• St. Bonaventure is 14-2 in games where it has a fully healthy roster this year.• Bona is 16-1 when it has Osun Osunniyi available for a full game - though

he was limited to 17 minutes at Buffalo due to foul trouble. The team is 16-1 when Osunniyi plays 18 or more minutes.

• Four of Bona’s nine losses are by six points or fewer - setbacks vs. Vermont, Canisius and Buffalo came by a combined 11 points and just one of those, an 84-79 decision at Buffalo Dec. 30, came with its regular lineup all available - though on that night Osunniyi was limited to 17 minutes due to foul trouble.

• The Bonnies got off to a slow start, opening at 1-4 while playing without starters Osun Osunniyi and Jaren English for the majority of the first five games. In all, both players have missed seven games in two different stints due to injuries. Seven of Bona’s eight defeats have come with Osunniyi or English out of the lineup.

70 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER When scoring 70 or more points this year, the Bonnies are 12-2.

TERRIFIC TRIO• St. Bonaventure’s sophomore trio of Kyle Lofton, Osun Osunniyi and

Dominick Welch have been special since Day 1 in the Brown and White. When all three have been available for a full game, the Bonnies are 25-4 dating back to Feb. 12, 2019.

WINNING THE TURNOVER BATTLE• St. Bonaventure has lost the turnover battle just six times this season. In A-10

play, the Bonnies are averaging 10.4 turnovers per game, best in the league. AJ BRINGS HIS A-GAMEAgainst Rutgers in Toronto, the Bonnies employed a starting lineup including two freshmen for the first time – Justin Winston and Alejandro Vasquez. Vasquez, a native of Queens who represented Puerto Rico at the FIBA U-18 Americas Championship Tournament prior to his Bonaventure commitment, poured home 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting. He earned Naismith Classic Player of the Game honors from the Basketball Hall of Fame for his efforts.

ELITE COMPANYWhen Alejandro Vasquez earned a spot in the starting lineup for Bona’s season-opener vs. Ohio on Nov. 5, he joined some rare company in recent Bonnies history. With that start, Vasquez became just the third true freshman to start his first game during the Mark Schmidt Era. He joined Kyle Lofton and Jaylen Adams as the only other two Bona frosh to start out of the gate under Schmidt.

ADAMS DOMINATING NBA G LEAGUESt. Bonaventure alum Jaylen Adams, 2018 Co-Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, continues to make his mark at the next level. After playing much of last season with the Atlanta Hawks, appearing in 34 games, he has been one of the NBA G League’s best players this year. Adams earned NBA G League Player of the Month honors for January, averaging 22.3 ppg, 5.7 apg, 4.4 rpg for the Wisconsin Herd, an affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks. In early February he was honored again with a spot on the NBA G League Midseason All-Star teams. He recently was named to the USA Basketball AmeriCup Qualifying Team under head coach Mike Fratello.

20-20 PRODUCTION The Bonnies received two 20-point scorers for the first time this season when both Kyle Lofton and Justin Winston produced 20 points apiece in the win at Saint Joseph’s Feb. 11. It was the first time that two Bonnies scored 20 or more points in the same game since Lofton and Courtney Stockard each did so in an overtime contest at Vermont Dec. 18, 2018.

Lofton, Osunniyi Named Preseason All-A-10

Lofton, fresh off a standout freshman campaign that saw him garner All-Rookie and All-Atlantic 10 Tournament honors, picked up a Preseason All-Conference Second Team selection.

Bona’s point guard, Lofton played over 37 minutes per game while starting all 34 contests last year and averaged 14.4 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.7 assists. He ranked 14th in league scoring during his debut campaign, was eighth in A-10 assists and ninth in steals (1.4 spg) while handing out 127 assists, just 16 away from the program’s freshman record.

Osunniyi, who made not only the All-Rookie Team but also the league’s All-Defensive Team last year, is on the Preseason All-Conference Third Team as well as the Preseason All-Defensive Team.

The second-year player averaged 7.5 points and 7.6 rebounds in his collegiate debut and established himself as one of the nation’s elite shot-blockers. His 92 blocks are the second-highest total in school history and ranked sixth in the nation as well as best in the A-10. No Division I freshman swatted more shots a year ago.

St. Bonaventure had not had two or more players on the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference teams since 2017-18 when Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley were both First Team selections. Prior to that, it had only happened one other time - 1999 when Tim Winn and Caswell Cyrus were selected to the second and third teams respectively.

Osunniyi, meanwhile, is Bona’s first Preseason All-Defensive pick since Youssou Ndoye in 2014-15. He joins Ndoye, Andrew Nicholson (2009, ‘10, ‘11), Marques Green (2002, ‘03), Caswell Cyrus (1998, ‘99) and Tim Winn (1999) as the only other Bonnies to ever earn that honor.

ROAD WARRIORS• The Bonnies have enjoyed much of their success this year away from home.

Since Dec. 1, St. Bonaventure is 9-3 in games away from the Reilly Center. St. Bonaventure has seven wins in true road games this year, most of any team in the Atlantic 10 (tied with Richmond) - SBU is also 3-0 in neutral court games.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE DOM• Sophomore Dominick Welch set career-highs in points (22) and rebounds (14)

in the Jan. 29 at Fordham, going 7-for-13 from the floor and scoring 19 points af-ter halftime. He followed that up with another double-double - marking the first consecutive such performances of his career - with 14 points and 13 rebounds Feb. 1 vs. George Mason, leading the Bonnies on the boards for the ninth time this year. He has four double-doubles during his career - all this season.

A B1G WINThe Bonnies played their first game north of the border, joining Buffalo, Harvard, Tennessee, Washington and Rutgers in the National Basketball Hall of Fame James Naismith Classic in Scotiabank Arena, home of the defending NBA champion Toronto Raptors Nov. 16. St. Bonaventure had the largest, and loudest, fan representation in Toronto and did not disappoint its faithful as the Bonnies scored an 80-74 win over Rutgers. It marked the program’s 34th win all-time over current members of the Big Ten and second in a row. The Bonnies defeated Maryland in Florida in November 2017. It gives Bona a Quad 1 win as well with Rutgers ranked No. 31 in the NET standings as of Feb. 10.

YOUTH IS SERVED• This year’s team is the youngest in Coach Mark Schmidt’s tenure and the

Bonnies are all-in with their underclassmen. The team’s top seven scorers are all freshmen or sophomores.

• No juniors or seniors are averging more than 15 minutes per game.• St. Bonaventure has received over 92 percent of its season scoring

from underclassmen and its top seven scorers are all either freshmen or sophomores. That puts Bona as one of the most youth-dominated rosters in the nation – St. Bonaventure ranks fourth among all Division I teams in terms of percent of scoring from its frosh and sophomores: 1. UNC-Asheville – 97 percent 2. Memphis – 96 percent 3. USC Upstate – 94 percent 4. St. Bonaventure – 92 percent

Playing Bonaventure Basketball Coach Mark Schmidt often talks about hoping to see his team play “Bonaventure basketball” - playing steady defense, winning the rebounding margin and taking care of the ball.

The Bonnies have certainly done that for much of the season, ranking among the A-10 leaders in rebounding, defense and lack of turnovers. BOLD DENOTES SEASON HIGHS

BOBBY ON THE BOARDS• Redshirt sophomore Bobby Planutis is in his first season of action with the

Bonnies after sitting out last year due to NCAA transfer rules. He came to the program known for his shooting ability after shooting better than 49 percent from beyond the arc as a freshman at Mount St. Mary’s. In the first portion of the season, though, his biggest impact with the Bonnies has been on the glass.

• While still searching for his shooting stroke in a Bona uniform, Planutis has made his impact felt in other ways - he has at least six rebounds in eight games and is fourth on the team in offensive rebounds (37).

• He recorded a career-high 14 points Dec. 2 at FAU, turning in a performance the Bonnies wouldn’t have won without. Playing without Osun Osunniyi during the second half, Planutis sparked the Bonnies off the bench in the Boca Beach Classic Championship Game, adding seven rebounds. He was key again in the Jan. 5 win at GW, posting 13 points and four boards in 26 minutes.

GETTING DEFENSIVESt. Bonaventure reached the 2019 A-10 Championship Game thanks in large part to a stifling defense that ranked second in the league by allowing 61.4 ppg. That trend has continued in 2019-20 - Bona ranks third by allowing just over 64 points per contest in league games. In the past two seasons, SBU has limited A-10 opponents to 60 points or less 18 times.

BONNIES TALLEST A-10 TEAMThe Bonnies boast the tallest roster in the Atlantic 10 this season at an average of 6-foot-6. Second is GW (6’5.88”) and third is UMass (6’5.21”). SBU has two players at 6’10” - senior Amadi Ikpeze and sophomore Osun Osunniyi. Among scholarship players, no player is shorter than 6’3” and three newcomers - Bobby Planutis, Robert Carpenter and Justin Winston are listed at 6’8”.

A DECADE TO REMEMBERThe 2010s were great to the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball program. The Bonnies went 187-125 (a .599 winning percentage), winning the Atlantic 10 title in 2012 and reaching the title game again in 2019. SBU earned an at-large NCAA Tournament bid and First Four win in 2018 following a share of the A-10 regular season league crown and NIT spot in 2016. In all, the Bonnies had four 20-win seasons and six straight years of 18+ victories.

THE SHORT LIST• Justin Winston started his career in a fashion that places him in elite territory.

Through the first five games, Winston was averaging 10.6 ppg while shooting 45.9 percent from the floor and 50 percent from beyond the arc.

• During Mark Schmidt’s 13 years as head coach, only three other freshman players have averaged at least 10.5 ppg while shooting better than 45 percent from the floor in their first five games of a career - Kyle Lofton (‘18; 14.4 ppg, 46% FG), Jaylen Adams (‘14; 11.2 ppg, 48% FG) and Andrew Nicholson (‘08; 11.4 ppg; 55% FG).

LOFTON, OSUNNIYI TABBED IN PRESEASON WATCH LISTSBoth Kyle Lofton and Osun Osunniyi are receiving a good deal of national attention following their tremendous debuts last year:• Lofton was named one NCAA analyst Andy Katz’s 11 “Players to Watch” nationally• Lofton was also cited by Katz as one of his “nine sophomores ready to make a

bigger impact” nationally• Osunniyi ranked No. 6 in Jay Bilas’ ESPN.com list of best defenders in the nation• Osunniyi was No. 21 in Andy Katz’s Preseason Top 25 for Kareem

Abdul-Jabbar award, given annually to the nation’s top center• Osunniyi also was cited as one of CBS reporter Jon Rothstein’s five Atlantic 10

“Breakout Players”• Osunniyi was picked No. 93 on the national Top 100 list by NBC Sports Rob Dauster ALL-CONFERENCE SUCCESS CONTINUES UNDER SCHMIDTWith last year’s selection of Courtney Stockard as first team All-Conference, Bona has had a first team player four consecutive seasons - Stockard (2019), Jaylen Adams (2016, 2017, 2018) and Matt Mobley (2018). Under Mark Schmidt, Bonnies players have made the first team All-Conference seven times. Schmidt has coached a total of 12 players who have made All-Conference teams. He also coached two A-10 Players of the Year, Jaylen Adams (2018) and Andrew Nicholson (2012).

WOODALL JOINS COACHING STAFFSt. Bonaventure has a new face on the bench this season as Tray Woodall joins the coaching staff. A star player during his collegiate days at Pitt (1,108 points, 580 assists and 116 steals. He is one of seven players in Pitt program history to eclipse career totals of 1,000 points and 500 assists), Woodall joins the Bonnies after spending the past two years on the coaching staff at Robert Morris. Woodall earned a promotion to assistant coach for the 2018-19 season after spending the previous year as director of basketball operations. Last year, Woodall helped the Colonials finish with an 18-17 overall record including an 11-7 mark in the Northeast Conference and a first round victory in the CIT.

Bonnies players celebrate with the Boca Beach Classic trophy after winning the in-season tournament in Boca Raton, Fla. Dec. 1-2.

NON-CONFERENCE WRAP UP• St. Bonaventure finished non-

conference play with an 8-5 record.

• Bona’s seven-game winning streak from Nov. 26-Dec. 21 tied a program record for consecutive non-conference wins since SBU joined the Atlantic 10 in 1979-80. St. Bonaventure also had a seven-game non-conference winning streak in 2017-18 when the Bonnies reached the NCAA Tournament with an at-large bid.

• Before having their win streak snapped Dec. 30 in a hard-fought battle at defending MAC champion Buffalo, the Bonnies had the fifth-longest active winning streak in the nation.

• SBU played the first five games without starter Jaren English (hand injury in preseason) and all but 11 minutes of the first five games without last year’s Atlantic 10 All-Rookie and All-Defensive Team pick Osun Osunniyi (leg bone bruise suffered in opener). Bona went 1-4 without those two, but won the next seven games once playing with a full roster for the first time.

• The Bonnies scored a pair of marquee non-conference moments - first, the program traveled to Canada for the first time to take on Rutgers in the James Naismith Classic at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. There, the Bonnies scored a win over their Big Ten foe, 80-74, on Nov. 16. Bona then earned its first in-season tournament title since the 2002 Paradise Jam when it won the Boca Beach Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. by defeating San Diego and FAU.

• Sophomores Dominick Welch (15.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg) and Kyle Lofton (12.5 ppg, 5.5 apg, 4.0 rpg) were named to the Boca Beach Classic All-Tournament Team.

• Lofton’s 86 total assists during non-conference ranked ninth in the nation while he was also 10th in A-10 scoring at 14.2 ppg.

• The Bonnies ranked fourth among all A-10 teams during non-conference in both points allowed (63.8 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (40.1%).

ATLANTIC 10 ACES• In the past five seasons, St. Bonaventure is the only Atlantic 10 team to reach

at least 10 victories during conference play each year. During that time, the Bonnies have the third-best winning percentage in the league overall (2014-15 through 2018-19): School Record Win Pct. 1. VCU 65-25 .722 2. Dayton 63-27 .700 3. St. Bonaventure 61-29 .678 4. Davidson 59-31 .656 Rhode Island 59-31 .656

• In fact, Bona’s 74-48 record and .607 winning percentage in A-10 play since the start of the 2012-13 season also ranks third in the league during that time period among schools who were league members that entire span (Davidson did not join the league until 2014-15).

BONNIES SELECTED 5th IN A-10St. Bonaventure was selected fifth in the preseason Atlantic 10 rankings. Last season’s ninth-place preseason ranking is the only time in the past four years that the Bonnies have not been selected fifth or higher. While last season’s ninth-place ranking in the preseason polls turned into a fourth-place finish and ultimately a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship Game, the Bonnies look to continue their trend of surpassing preseason expectations: St. Bonaventure has not finished lower than its preseason poll selection since ‘12-13.

NOTEWORTHY NUMBERS 10 The Bonnies have won 10+ Atlantic 10 games in each of the past five years18 St. Bonaventure has won 18 or more games in six straight seasons 24 Former St. Bonaventure players coached by Mark Schmidt who have gone on to earn professional contracts 37.4 Minutes per game played last season as a freshman by Kyle Lofton. In all, Lofton played 1,273 minutes, more than any other returning A-10 player. 60 SBU held 11 of its 18 Atlantic 10 opponents last year to 60 points or less 164 St. Bonaventure led the Atlantic 10 with 164 blocks last year (4.8 per game)

Small School, Huge Heart: Size Is Not Barrier To SuccessSt. Bonaventure has proven over many years that a small enrollment is not an obstacle to basketball success. It is true that, with 1,840 undergradu-ates, St. Bonaventure is one of the 10 smallest NCAA Division I schools by enrollment. But that has zero bearing on basketball success. Plus, Bonnies fans are well-known for their passion. In a region (city of Olean and village of Allegany) that has just over 15,000 people, St. Bonaventure sold over 2,600 season tickets this year. On av-erage, when school is in session, more than half of the student body (1,840) attends games. In 2018-19, attendance at the Reilly Center was an average of 4,229 fans per game.

Nick Schmidt Part Of StaffThere are two members of the Schmidt family on the St. Bonaventure bench. Nick Schmidt, the oldest son of head coach Mark Schmidt and his wife Anita, joined the coaching staff last season as a graduate assistant. Nick graduated from Alfred (N.Y.) University where he played four years of basketball.

• A young Bonnies squad in 2018-19 represented one of Schmidt’s finest coaching jobs as he guided a freshman-laden team to a 12-6 A-10 record and a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship Game. It marked the fifth straight year of double digit conference wins, a program first, while Bona’s 85 A-10 triumphs since 2015 rank second among all conference teams. Senior Courtney Stockard’s all-conference selection gave SBU four straight seasons of landing players on the A-10 First Team while both Kyle Lofton and Osun Osunniyi earned All-Rookie Team picks with Osunniyi also landing on the All-Defensive Team.

• Along the way, Schmidt captured history. On Feb. 17, 2019, he became the winningest coach in program history as he passed the legendary Larry Weise with his 203rd victory as Bonnies head coach. Entering the 2019-20 season he owns 210 wins on the Bona sidelines.

• With the All-Conference backcourt of Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley leading the way, 2017-18 was the most successful year of Schmidt’s tenure. The Bonnies went 26-8, setting a school record for wins in a season (the prior mark of 25 had stood since the Final Four season of 1969-70) and reached the NCAA Tournament. There, they beat UCLA in the First Four in Dayton, Ohio, for the program’s first NCAA win since that same 1969-70 season. The Bonnies went 14-4 in the Atlantic 10 to finish second, their fourth straight year with double-digit conference victories. Perhaps the most remarkable achievement of the season were the 13 straight wins to end the regular season. Both Adams and Mobley were selected to the All-Conference First Team as well as the NABC All-District Team. Junior forward LaDarien Griffin was named co-winner of the A-10’s Chris Daniels Award for Most Improved Player.

• He has led St. Bonaventure to four 20-win seasons including three of the past four.

• In 2015-16, the Bonnies tied the program record for wins in the regular season (22) and set a school record for Atlantic 10 wins (14), winning a share of their first-ever A-10 regular season title. Schmidt was selected the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year by his peers, becoming only the third Bona coach so honored and first since Jim Baron in 1995.

• Schmidt’s blue-collar efforts to revive the tradition-rich St. Bonaventure program resulted in a championship season in 2011-12. The Bonnies won their first-ever Atlantic 10 title with three straight victories in Atlantic City, N.J. In the NCAA Tournament, they led No. 3 seed Florida State for nearly the entire game but fell by three points.

• Schmidt was instrumental in the development of 2012 A-10 Player of the Year and AP Honorable Mention All-American Andrew Nicholson, who ended his career ranked second in school history in scoring (2,103 points) and fourth in rebounds (887).

ONE OF THE NATION’S TOP VENUES

• “The Reilly Center has enjoyed multiple stretches as one of the game’s most hostile venues. Fans arrive early and don’t wait until tipoff to start cheering. In good years, you don’t want to play at the Reilly Center ... this is one of America’s more underrated venues.” - ESPN.com

• In 2016, ESPN selected The RC as the most difficult place for opponents to play in the Atlantic 10 and one of the top 10 such ven-ues in the nation thanks to its often raucous crowds and tremendous college basketball atmosphere
