St Bernard’s Ladies Lunch Hello All,
Many of you would be aware that this Saturday we have a massive day happening both on and off the field. Our Senior side plays Old Scotch on Oval
1 at 2pm in a game that will provide a clearer picture of where we stand in the highest VAFA division. No doubt our guys will acquit themselves well.
There will be just as much action off the field at our blockbuster Ladies Lunch that kicks off at 1130am. On current figures we expect close to 180
mostly excitable ladies attending. With Mother's Day on Sunday this is the perfect opportunity for everyone to enjoy a fun lunch. The day includes: -
A FASHION PARADE WITH LIZ AND KATIE DAVENPORT.
Liz has won the Medal of Order of Australia(OAM) for her services to the fashion industry and to the community. Katie worked as a solicitor and international tax consultant before starting up her own fashion label in 1999 and is one of the only fashion designers ever invited by the famous Ritz
Hotel in London to present a fashion parade for VIP guests to coincide with the Royal Ascot races.
GUEST SPEAKER TIFFANY CHERRY
A trained physiotherapist, Tiffany represented Australia at the 1999 World triathlon championships and was an accomplished hurdler and training
partner for Cathy Freeman. She is best known for her role as a boundary rider for Fox Footy and will shortly be heading to London to cover the 2012
Olympic Games.
WENDY STAPLETON AND BAND. Wendy needs no introduction to St.Bernard's and is a great entertainer and crowd pleaser and will no doubt have the place rocking the moment she
hits the floor.
Thanks to MONTARA WINES all ladies will receive a complimentary glass of champagne on arrival and a roast carvery will be served. Your entry
fee also includes afternoon tea and cakes at half time.
There will also be twenty plus items to be raffled off where the winner gets to pick their prize from the display table!.
If you haven't booked and would like to attend please advise us ASAP. Cost is only $35.00 per person.

This week, the scoreboard was less than impressive. It was also hard to see, hidden under the Williamstown
Clubrooms roof. Unfortunately the scores on it were also disappointing, although it didn’t show the true game
as it was played.
Last minute injuries once again left us with a limited bench but our opening half revealed that we were more
than our oppositions match. A few costly mistakes kept Williamstown in the game.
They call the third quarter “the premiership quarter” for a reason and a run on by Williamstown saw them go
into the three quarter time break three goals ahead. Injuries late in the third left us patching up holes in the
backline and we played out the quarter fighting the good fight but unable to make an impact on the margin of
three goals.
Whilst we are all disappointed by the result we can look forward to a very competitive year among the top 4
sides of A Grade.
We showed that under less than ideal circumstances we were able to produce great football and lead the
best teams in our division.
Nest week we re-group and face Werribee at home. Another challenge.
Cheers,
Wayne Carey

Thanks very much for the young fellas in the under 15a (Denahy,Baker & Wood) For giving up a home game and coming down to Werribee to help there mates All three boys acquitted themselves very well and have a good footy future at St-Bernards. In a game that was played in overcast conditions & very little breeze the young under 16 side Did really well in competing against a side who had a few talls & a couple of slick runners. We just need to handle the ball better and dispose quicker and more accurately so we can Bring our team mates into the game without being polaxed?? To many times we turned the footy over to the Werribee boys and made them look a better side We have to be prepared to run,man up and be quicker in our decision making.Liam Collins Played a cracker of a game from start to finish & he is improving each week.(keep the good work going) Anthony Consolo,Hugh McLaughlin & Luke Arrowsmith toiled hard down back and showed they will Get better as the year progresses.Matthew Catterall’s extra work load in running the boundary for The Warriors is paying off as his fitness is really improving along with his more intense attitude & bank balance David Paoli who started on the bench was a big winner when he went into the centre during the first term He had plenty of touches but like a few of his mates needs to hit targets.James Kenny contributed again With another ripper goal in the second term. Lets regroup this week and see if we can get our first win Mel Beyer coach 0412-247486

Hoppers Crossing were a force last year losing only one home and away game and that was to St Bernard’s.
Hoppers were set to square up the ledger and caught us napping in the opening minutes, but at the first
break had only one more scoring shot than us. Jack Moon’s tackling was a highlight of the 1st quarter and
was well supported by Dylan Gollant. Gus Carey was given the biggest task of all to run all day with the
competitions best player. By the end of the day Gus had taken the points from Razlog. Nick Dachs
continued to play to his strength by giving us plenty of run. Aiden Birch and Charles Bibby were given an
opportunity of playing in the centre and made the most of this. Luke DiLizio was given the big role of playing
on Kitchen and like Carey shut him out of the game. Matt Arena is starting to realise how strong he is and is
an imposing force when he tackles and runs forward with the ball his switch play was very good. Nath
Borzillo is continuing to get better at the centre bounce and Jack Thorogood has continued his good form to
dominate pack marking all over the ground. Henry Jaggard was elusive up forward and is always a good
option and when Will Mc Allister went forward he snagged a goal, the first in two years. Zav Hannett, Rory
Mc Gregor and Alex Sykes our main running players make us look good with their run and carry style of
football. We lost Luke Holland early in the game with sore ribs so lost some of our drive in the midfield. Mr
100%, Luke Beddoe again ran his guts out getting plenty of the football and Kyle Dowsett was again strong
all over the ground. Toby Nathan, Luke Brock and Jack Catterall are improving every week and have
become an integral part of the team
The true test of the season comes this week against Yarraville, but like Hoppers last year they are beatable.
We must tighten up in the backline and be disciplined in our attack at the ball. Our stand out quality at the
moment is tackling with an average of five per quarter, so now let us focus on our disposal and sharpen up
those skills. Boys be prepared to take a risk, especially against the bigger teams and once again thanks to
all the parents who helped out on the weekend. I have sacked the orange boy.

The mighty 14Cs travelled to Sunshine not sure what to expect as Sunshine had a 1-1 record. At training on
Wednesday the boys had nominated Paddy and Matt as co-captains congratulations to you both. Sunshine
won the toss and kicked to the end favoured by the slight breeze. Whilst Sunshine started well, we were
going okay and were only 3 goals down half way through the quarter, however Sunshine dominated the last
part of the quarter and we were down 7.3 to 0.0 at quarter time. We battled hard in the second quarter and
had 25 tackles (Paddy had 7) but they were too strong and too good for us. Half time 12.7 to 0.0. Like last
week we had too many boys just watching and not wanting to be involved in the contest.
To the boys credit they showed a lot more endeavour in the second half and in patches took the game right
up to Sunshine. We were rewarded after moving the ball the length of the field with a free kick from which
Seb F kicked our only goal. ¾qtr 16.9 to 1.1. The last quarter was similar to the third but too often we had
players not staying on their men and letting Sunshine outnumber us 3 to 1 in their forward line. We had a
few forward attacks but could only manage a point whereas Sunshine kicked a couple of late goals. Final
score 21.15 to 1.2.
Paddy was our best, with a great first half, getting plenty of kicks, taking several marks and tackling hard.
Alex battled hard and started to take a couple of marks and is really developing in his footy. Matt provided a
target up forward and was good when he was on the ball. Lachie M took a nice mark and battled hard
whether forward or back. James played his usual gutsy game on the wing or ball. Mark did a good job with
the kick ins. Adrian continues to work hard and played really well across the backline. Pat K defended
strongly and stood up under pressure, Seb F was under siege on the backline but never gave up, his trip
forward saw him get a free kick and goal. Gus as usual tried hard and got the ball moving, Ben had a really
good third quarter, Seb C and Jordan did some nice pieces of play, Mack hurt his ankle but battled on and
Anthony B did some nice things in his first game for the year.
It was another tough day at the office but there were plenty of positives to work on. We need to remember
the basics such as attacking the ball, sticking on our man and shepherding your team mates. We have to get
used to playing out the full 20 minutes of each quarter as Sunshine kicked easy goals towards the end of
each quarter.
Let’s train hard and get ready for a big game against Spotswood at home this Sunday. Thanks to our army
of helpers. Paul

Today we played a side that played very well as a team. The game was played in great spirit and we were
able to match the spirit of the opposition and play well as a team, sharing the ball around and following
instructions. We were very good in the area of tackling and defending when they had the ball but too often
we were not intense enough with the attack on the loose ball or when it was there to be won, which was
most evident with the number of easy marks that were dropped by many boys today. The positives is the
number of goals we are kicking with 10 in our last two games and the way we are sharing the ball to put the
player kicking the goal in the best possible position to score rather than all blazing away. The improvement
of many of the boys in the last couple of weeks has been great and I look forward to more improvement as
the boys become closer as a team and create a better understanding of how we would like to play. It is also
pleasing that we are enjoying playing as a group and the boys are being very understanding as we juggle
the positions off the bench which is creating lots of opportunities for the boys to experience different
positions. We will be working at training on leading toward the ball in the forward line rather than looking for
the kicks over the top and maintaining a wall across half forward and the centre when the ball is on the way
out of the forward line. We will also continue to work on kick ins to get our set ups right during the games. A
big test looms this Sunday with a game against Williamstown at Williamstown. See those of you at training
that can make it at 4p.m until 5.30 Wednesday and for those that are unable please contact either Simon or
myself to advise availability. Thanks to Simon for the preparation of the duty roster and for those parents

Round 3 saw us up against a talented team in Williamstown.
From the opening bounce it was clear that it was going to be a tough game.
Certainly in the first half, Williamstown wanted the ball a lot more than we did and this showed on the
scoreboard. Whilst we were within reach of them at half time, we could not afford to be lazy in our efforts
in the second half.
Max Nagle tried his best throughout the game, Lachlan Farrell marked and defended well all game , Ben
Overman worked hard at winning the ball for us, Lachlan Gollant was in and under packs trying to work
the ball forward and Danny Torcia started well in defence and then in the ruck.
A couple of injuries in the second half did not help us - Max Nagle (sore knee) and Sam Moloney (broken
thumb), however the boys efforts were much better in this half. If we can play hard contested football for
more of the game in the coming weeks, the results will fall our way.
Let’s get to training on Friday, work hard and come out and have a great game on Sunday against Point
Cook.
See you at training Friday.

Best Players Kennedy, Hough, Pereira, Lai, Bassagio, Latina
Although the team were prepared for a hard contest our opponents got a jump on us in the first quarter and
had four goals on the scoreboard by the end of the quarter. To the boys credit they fought hard in the
second quarter to claw their way back into the game. Although it was not reflected on the scoreboard they
were more desperate and were getting first hands on the ball more often.
Jake Kennedy was hard at the ball all day and must have had the greatest number of head high tackles
applied to him in a game of football. Caleb Hough was clever in both his getting the ball and his disposal.
Blake Pereira continued to build his versatile skills in managing to slow an opponent while playing an
attacking style of football. Andrew Lai created options up forward and also took strong overhead marks.
Andrew Bassagio was hard at the ball all game and Fabian Latina ran all day.
The team learnt a lot about their ability to persist and turn their game around from this match. We look
forward to next week and ensuring we don’t give our opponents a head start.

The under 11A travelled to Williamstown and with four players missing it was going to be a tough game. We started the game well with early goals to Commisso and Simpson. Our midfield was on top and we were getting great drive from Ryan, Liberatore , Simpson and Bell. Our defenders were playing in front with good run from Rando, Ryan, Sammut , Griggs, Sykes and Stefania. Our forward led well into space O'Sullivan and Crook. Richards and Williams were also working hard to keep the ball in the forward line. It was a real struggle after quarter time with many packs forming and it was hard to get clearing kicks. We need to pick up the ball as many of our players tapped the ball along the ground. Midfielders still need to work back and help out the defenders when the opposition have the ball.
In the end we we stronger around the contest and were able to win a hard fought game. Great effort boys.

The U11B’s had a difficult day at the office today, we were confronted with a side from Flemington who were
bigger, stronger and faster and the scoreboard reflected this.
However our endeavour and ability to never to give up meant that the opposition new that we were up for a
fight. Our tackling, chasing and attack on the ball lead by our 2 co-captains Alex and Ben was evident
throughout the match.
The boys listened to all directions from the coaches and did their best to implement them onto the field.
Great spirit in the back half from Adam and Joshua meant the opposition had to work very hard for their
goals. Once again Corey, Ethan and Carlo were impressive.
Continued improvement from Samuel, Thomas, Andrew and Andre will mean that our team will be better
prepared for our coming games. Thanks again to our U/10’s who played in our side to help us out.

Best Players
Michael and Jessie were our joint captains today, with both being rewarded for their outstanding team ethos. You might have noticed that this point in particular often rates a mention. That is no mistake as it is what my philosophy of coaching is about at this level.
We were off to a flyer in the first quarter this week. With Jack applying great pressure on the opposition, Zach providing an all important shepherd on the wing and a wonderful smother on a PEGS kick heading into their forward line, we were able to finish off the good work with three first quarter goals.
The second term was always going to prove a little harder as we were heading into a stiffening breeze. Alex played a “saviour” role as a quasi goal-keeper on the last line of defence and Zach produced two more smothers and together they held their positions on the full back line and repelled many of PEGS’ attacks limiting them to one goal for the quarter. Hugh took a great mark and along with Michael provided a wonderful shepherd 14 ½ minutes into the last quarter to finally have the ball heading into our forward line. It was here that our main highlight of the quarter occurred. In a 15 minute quarter – with no time on – Nicholas Di Lizio was able to take a mark at the 15 minute and 2 second mark after something sounding like a siren (or car horn) was heard by all bar the umpire. Not to be phased he headed back on the mark and drilled our only score of the quarter and our fourth goal of the game.
The third quarter saw the karma train come into play as Nicholas gathered a contested ball about 25 meters from our goal and broke free of the pack to kick the ball clear - and in the wrong direction - back to our wing. Once he realised this he was able to see the funny side of it all. A wonderful tackle by Noah and forward line handballs by Joshua S and Alex found Marcus in the clear who added our second of two goals for the quarter.
So into the last term we went and Christien and Max joined in on the smothering act that was a highlight throughout the game, Di Lizio applied repeat pressure acts on the opposition and attacked contests vigorously, Robert executed a big tackle and was joined by a joint Michael and Jesse tackle on a PEGS player who though he was in the clear. The boys finished with a lot of run highlighted by some great attacking play off the half back line by Robert and Nicholas E. We added three goals in the last term and managed to keep PEGS scoreless in a quarter for the third time in the game.
Well as the fixture would have it we must rise early this week and head down the road on our longest road trip of the season. Old Westbourne is where we will be spending our Mother’s Day morning, so after you’ve gotten up early and made mum breakfast in bed, head on down to Westbourne Grammar and please be there before 8:30am.

Best Players Team effort
As we all awoke to yet another fine Sunday morning and certainly while the enthusiasm levels are still at
high levels for all those involved, the task of getting up early and arriving at the ground well ahead of
schedule is quite an easy and pleasurable experience. However, much to my amazement, this dedication to
punctuality was taken to whole new level by the Point Cook team and supporters who were all there ready to
go an hour before any of our boys had even got out of bed. When they were doing drills on the ground while
our boys were all still arriving at the ground (on time) I suspected we would be in for a very competitive
game. I was not wrong!
As was predicted the well drilled Point Cook team certainly applied the pressure from the opening bounce
but our boys soon adjusted to the tempo and had control of the play for most of the first quarter. The reason
for this was quite apparent to all. That is, opponents were being picked up and players were sticking to their
positions and playing in their designated parts of the ground – all good lessons learnt from last week’s game.
Some great individual efforts also played a part in the opening quarter namely Jake Muir who was
outstanding in his reading of the play and controlling of the ball both on the ground and in the air.
Point Cook were not to be denied and certainly stuck at their game and as the game wore on added several
well-structured goals. One or two were even scored with all our backline somewhere else other than in the
backline. I’m not sure where they went but we found them a bit later and reminded them that their job was to
stop the opposition from scoring goals. To be fair, there were some fantastic efforts in the backline none
more so than those of Arion Marley whose tackles and smothers were a sight to behold.
Fantastic efforts from our little guys including Tom Lowrie, Sam Doyle, Jordan Healy, Jett Stanley and
Mason Driscoll kept the ball moving out of the packs. While an inspired display of marking from Lucas
Edmonds in the last quarter really impressed and showed that with a bit of effort the rewards will come.
Overall it was another good learning day for our boys as they adjust to life as real footballers. If they keep
enjoying the game as much as they have and continue to put in the effort then the improvements will
continue to come.

St Bernard’s v Spotswood

Goals 10
Best Players Team Effort
Through some excellent late work by Team Manager Bruno, a game was arranged to cover the early bye
set out through the WRFL fixture.
Twelve of our boys were able to attend on the morning for a hit out under the bridge in Spotswood and
they certainly put on an exhibition.
After a nail biting finish the week before, we were hopeful that the boys could continue with the effort from
last week and as soon as the game started the boys fought hard to get the ball into our forward line and
effectively keep it there for the quarter posting two goals to nil.
The second quarter started off on a similar vein but this time the opposition were able to keep us well held
for the majority of the quarter but the boys pushed hard scoring two late goals whilst Spotswood scored
two themselves. A lot of effort went into ensuring that we constantly defended and pushed forward with a
number of boys scoring goals for the first time and increased the number of tackles they laid.
The third quarter was the best of the year considering the numbers and the fact the boys really got
together and kicked four terrific goals to the opposition’s one. By this stage we had a number of players
looking to increase their super coach possession count with a bit of waxing going on across the midfield.
The last quarter was a lot tighter as our boys tired but we still pressured the opposition and constantly
held our own with a number of deep forward flurry’s that resulted in a couple of goals and behinds.
Whilst St Bernard’s managed to kick 10 goals to the opposition’s three with Luke top scoring with 3, the
game felt a lot closer and was a terrific example of how far they have come in just a few games and how
well the group is starting to bond. Terrific efforts by Luke, Christopher, Charlie, Steven, Joseph, Max,
Jarrod, Paul, Joey, Harrison, Aidan and Adrian.
We should also note the assistance from Spotswood by giving us four players each quarter to even the
numbers up and a special thanks to Wes Crook for umpiring.
