Feast of the Baptism of the Lord
Today marks the end of the Christmas season, the
Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Traditionally, the
Christmas season consisted of Christmas Day and then
the twelve days that followed, concluding on
January 6th, the Feast of the Epiphany. With the
liturgical changes of Vatican II, the season now ends
with today's feast. So each year the Christmas season
can be a little shorter or a little longer, but always more
than twelve days.
The Oldest Christmas feast is not Christmas day. It is
the feast of the Epiphany, Greek for Manifestation." Isn't
that what Christmas is all about, the manifestation of the
face of God, the light of the world, the Son of God, the
Word of God? That manifestation has been celebrated
in three different ways: by his birth, by the visitation of
the Magi, and finally by his baptism. In the Eastern
Churches they continue to celebrate the Feast of the
Epiphany as the central celebration and this feast of the
Manifestation encompasses all three feasts, all three
"manifestations." In the West, we have separated them
into three different feast days: Christmas Day, the
Epiphany, and finally today the Baptism of the Lord.
On Christmas day, he was manifested to the
Shepherds representing the Jewish people. On the
Epiphany he was manifested to the world (the Gentiles,)
at least symbolically by the visit of the Magi, one for each
known continent, foreshadowing that one day the name
of Jesus, "God saves," would be known and experienced
all around the world. Finally, he was manifested in and
through his ministry and preaching, which began with his
baptism, when the Holy Spirit overshadowed him in the
form of a dove, and the voice of His Heavenly Father was
heard.
To this day, he is witnessed to by the Jewish people,
by the Gentiles, and by the power of his ministry carried
out by his Church, God's people. The Jewish people give
witness by continuing to seek him, their Messiah, and
will embrace him before the end of time as prophesied
by St. Paul. The Gentiles witness to him in that over 2
billion people around the world of all nations call him
Lord and Savior. And finally, the healing of his teaching
and sacraments continue to bear witness to the fact that
he is the promised one.
As this Christmas season draws to a close, I hope you
have been touched by his spirit of Joy and Peace, that
you have seen the face of the Christ Child. And I pray
that you and I may more faithfully and powerfully bear
witness to the fact that he is the One, the Word, who was
with God the Father from the beginning, and that he has
set us free! In Christ, Rev. Joseph E. Dorner
Pastor of St. Bernadette Catholic Church

January 2021 Prayer Intentions
Pope Francis' Intention
May the Lord give us the grace to live in full fellowship with our
brothers and sisters of other religions, praying for one another,
open to all.
Bishop Ricken's Intention
That men and women of faith may be awakened by the Holy
Spirit to share their relationship with Jesus Christ with others.
Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the most
Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I
desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now
receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into
my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there,
and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be
separated from You. Amen.
Let us pray for our own personal
intentions and for the health and well being
of all of our parishioners and their
extended families.

A Simple Explanation of THE MASS by Fr. Eamon Tobin
Have you picked up your copy?
They are available on the table
in the Narthex.
Do you want to grow in your understand-
ing and appreciation of the Mass?
In this book you will find a commentary on each part of
the Mass and suggestions on how you can enter into the
Mass more consciously, actively and
fruitfully.
In summary, the Mass is a celebration of the death
and Resurrection of Jesus Christ and full and active
participation in the Mass by all the people is the aim
to be considered above all else.

Happy New Year!
This month our families are
learning that Jesus is The Way, The Truth, and
The Life, and that through the sacrament of
Baptism Jesus makes us children of God. Our

gave His Son, so that whoever believes in Him
would have eternal life." - John 3:16
Please continue to pray for our students
and families as we continue moving
forward with our faith!
Congratulations to our winners and to all who
participated. Thank you to Tom and Mark of the

There are so many articles and stories about Fatima and
they are all extremely interesting. In FORMED, take a look
at Father Andrew Apostoli: Fatima for today: The Urgent
Marion Message of Hope.
Through the apparitions of our Lady of Fatima Which took
place 100 years ago, our Lady’s called to prayer and
penance for the salvation of souls and peace in the world is
as relevant now as when first delivered to three Portuguese
peasant children in 1917.
Because of the prophetic nature of her messages, our Lady
of Fatima has been the subject of much controversy and
speculation. In Father Apostoli‘s book. he carefully
analyzes the events that took place in Fatima and clears up
any lingering questions or doubts about their meaning.
In the world of today it’s good to take a look or revisit this
message. Our world is in need of generous hearts willing
to make reparation for those in danger of losing their way
to God
Help this to lead us in this new year.
