St. Columba

St. Columba was born in Ireland and is of royal descent. He is known for spreading Christianity in what we know as today as Scotland at the beginning of the Hiberno-Scottish mission. He was ordained before he was twenty-five and spent fifteen years preaching and setting up communities within Ireland, having studied under some of Ireland's most prominent church figures. We want you to enjoy being creative in our lessons and to think about new and interesting solutions which could be useful in the world around you.

Our staffOur staff are all design and manufacturing enthusiasts who will help you to learn new designing and making skills using different materials and equipment.Mr Sehnal

Mr CampbellDT TechnicianWelcome to the St Bede‟s Music Department! I

very much look forward to meeting you and get-ting to know you over the next few months.

My name is Mr Robinson and I am the Head of Music and also teach some RE. I am originally from Huddersfield in West Yorkshire and moved to Durham in 2004. I play the pipe organ (organs in church), piano and I sing. I have always loved music and have been playing the piano since the age of 7. I am the musician I am today because of the inspiring musical teaching of my Headmaster Dr. Rogerson and my organ teachers Dr. Graham Cummings and Dr. Gordon Stewart.

At St Bede‟s we work very closely with Durham Music Service. You will have the opportunity to learn an instrument. Our fantastic team of DMS staff will be able to offer instrumental lessons on Guitar, Drum Kit, Brass, Woodwind and Vocals. You don‟t have to have your own instrument before you start as you are able to hire one from the Music Service. For those who receive Free School Meals we offer this service for free.

Music is a very practical subject. Whenever possible we use instruments in lessons. These include; Djembe Drums, Keyboards, Guitars, Drum Kit as well as singing each week. At St Bede‟s you will have one hour of music per week.

On a weekly basis we have a lunchtime Vocal Group – Bedes Voices (open to boys and girls) group. And after school we hold our weekly Wind Band rehearsal led by Mrs Preston our woodwind teacher. We have between 2 and 3 concerts per year and these are usually held at school.

Over the last couple of years we have also had many opportunities to work with other musicians. These have included Paul Smith (composer) and Voces8 (professional vocal group that you can find on YouTube). Students have performed at Ushaw College, Durham Cathedral and The Sage, Gateshead. Our students always also look forward to singing as part of our annual Primary School Vocal Festival.

Hello, my name is Mrs Ord and I lead the RE department. We currently have

six teachers teaching RE here at St Bede‟s and our classrooms can be found

in the humanities department. While we are very proud of our excellent exam

results, our vision of education is much broader than academic excellence.

Our vision is based around care for the entire person, so they may flourish

academically, emotionally, socially and spiritually.

We aim to equip all our students with a personal awareness of their self-worth,

dignity and purpose that comes from a realisation of how much they are

infinitely and unconditionally loved by God. We believe it is imperative that

young people know their own worth and the dignity of every human being they

encounter.

Our curriculum is mostly made up of Catholic Christianity, however, religious

background has no bearing on the ability to excel in our subject, we welcome

pupils of all faiths and none. Visitors to our school often comment upon the

welcoming, inclusive, caring atmosphere in our school and our RE lessons

reflect this wider ethos.

We often consider the quote from St Catherine of Siena “Be who God meant

you to be and you will set the whole world on fire”. We hope to support all our

pupils on a journey of personal discovery throughout their time in our school.

Triangles Investigation. The Rectangle task. Angles Investigation.

The rectangle above is being

covered with square tiles.

How many more of the square

tiles are needed to cover the

entire rectangle?

Please explain your answer?

Sam sketches

out the diagram

to the side. The

angle are labelled

A, without measuring, which of these

do you know must be true?

Explain your thinking?

a+b = 180

a+c = 180

b+c = 180

b+d = 180

A=b

A=c

B=c

B=d
