CONFESSION

ANNUAL ARCHDIOCESAN CATHOLIC APPEAL
While many aspects of our life have come to a standstill, the work of our diocesan and parish ministries continues as we strive to meet the needs of those who are relying on our guidance and assistance. The sick and homebound continue to receive spiritual support and information over the phone from the Archdiocese’s Faith Community Nurses and Chaplains program. Our Pregnancy Help Centers continue to provide resources for women facing crisis pregnancies. Those suffering from addiction still need support and guidance and many have greater need for counseling and spiritual support during this time of heightened anxiety.
Many thanks to those of you who have already supported it. As of May 22th, St. Bartholomew has pledged $65,070 towards our assessment of $32,320 and our goal of $103,526. The success of the Appeal is vital in funding the 51 central ministries that provide assistance to our parishes, schools, and communities in a variety of ways. Every gift, regardless of the size, is meaningful and can make an impact. To learn more about the Catholic Appeal, or to make your gift online, please visit the new Appeal website at bostoncatholicappeal.org, where you can also view the 2020 Catholic Appeal video.
FACE MASKS AVAILABLE
Are you a senior in need of a fabric mask?
Be Kind Needham is a 100% volunteer based organization dedicated to distributing masks to Needham’s most vulnerable population. If you are a senior or know of a senior citizen in need of a mask please contact us at [email protected]. Quantities are limited. Please note that these are not medical grade masks but they can provide a level of protection if you need to leave your home. All we ask in return is that you smile under your mask!
ELDERS & THOSE MOST AT RISK
Once again, please remember to check in on the elders of our community and those who might have underlying conditions that make them most at risk for this coronavirus. If you know of someone who needs something, or you, yourself, are in need, please call the parish office.
A NOTE FROM FR. DEREK
It is hard to believe that we have returned to the celebration of public Masses. I must confess, I did not think this would come this early in the re-opening process. I would remind you all that Cardinal Sean has extended the dispensation from the Sunday obligation
for the foreseeable future, so nobody should feel obliged to come. I have also prepared a handout to help you know what to expect when coming back to the church. If you received our email last week, you may have already seen it. If not it is available on our website at http://stbartholomew-needham.org/wp-content/ uploads/2020/05/Guide-for-Parishioners.pdf. I look forward to seeing all of you when the time is right for each of you. Let us continue to keep one another in prayer during these days.

REGISTRATION
In March, we were planning to implement a new online registration program (the one we used last year has some significant issues). Due to the office closures, that project has been delayed. We have both a printed and an online registration form available, however all payments will need to be either mailed to or dropped off at the parish office. We appreciate your understand-ing with this inconvenience. We understand that at this time many are in financially uncertain circumstances. Please feel free to register now, and pay later (or contact us in the fall if financial assistance is needed).h ttp://stba rtho lomew-n eedha m.org/ re-registration/
CELEBRATING MAY,
THE MONTH OF MARY
May is the month dedicated to Our Mother
Mary. Usually we have Mary focused crafts at
Community Sunday, the crowning of Mary on
Mother's day and daily rosary (all year). Although we
are unlikely to resume parish gatherings this month,
we can still be connected in celebrating May as the
Month of Mary. Please see our parish website to
download a resource book for celebrating the Month
of Mary at home! There are prayers, links to videos
and articles, children's activities, lectio divina, music
links and more! Every age group should be able to find
something. With all of our time at home, this is the
perfect time to make devotion to Mary a part of our
every day lives. Contact Jen if you have any questions
about the resource book.

UPDATE ON THE SACRAMENTS
The Archdiocese has delayed the celebration of the
sacraments until further notice, so First Communion and
Confirmation have been postponed. We will update you
on that timeline as soon as we have more information,
but, to paraphrase Dr. Fauci, we don't set the timeline,
the virus does. In the meantime, we encourage you to
continue to prepare your children and teens, talk to them
about your faith, use the activities in the Holy Week book,
and most importantly, find time to spend in
prayer.
FORMED: FREE MOVIES AND
ONLINE CONTENT
Currently, Formed has offered free memberships to anyone interested! They have a huge online selection of movies for all ages (even a kids section!) and other great faith formation programs, again, for all ages… they even have books you can download. Whether you are trying to continue to connect to the faith while we are separated, looking for a movie to unwind at the end of the week, or looking for enriching activities for the kids while you work, Formed has you covered! Go to Formed.com or see our resources page for more info: http://stbartholomew-needham.org/covid-19-response-and-resources/
OFFERTORY
Thank you so much to those of you who
have been dropping off or mailing in
your donations, and to those of you
who have continued, or are new to, donating online.
Your support of the parish community is greatly appreci-
ated. If you wish to donate online, you can do that by
going to the parish website and clicking the “Donate!”
icon or simply clicking here. I know with the way the stock
market is going, and with the pandemic, that these are
uncertain times, but every little bit will help. Thank you.
STAFFING AT THE RECTORY
Please be aware that I have asked the rectory staff to work remotely as much as possible during these uncertain days. When you call, if I am not able to answer the phone at the moment, you are able to access a directory to leave a message for the person for whom you are looking.

VIRTUAL CONCERT EVENT
On Friday evening, May 29th, the St. Bart’s Music Ministry presented its first virtual concert, “An Evening With Charlie and Antonia.” If you missed it, or want to see it again, the concert will be posted on our website and on our facebook page.
THE HOBBIT: DISCOVERING GRACE AND PROVIDENCE IN BILBO’S ADVENTURES
While we are all spending more time at home, we thought it would be fun to explore the faith through JRR Tolkien’s
the Hobbit! Considering the role of grace and providence in the Hobbit will allow us to also discover God’s grace and
providence in our own lives, even in, or perhaps especially in, these uncertain times. This program, from Catholic
Courses, is structured with a half hour video lecture and a half hour of discussion, both on Zoom. Class will be offered
at 10am on Thursday, with the option of adding a Wednesday evening option if there is interest. Although it is not
necessary to read the Hobbit (or watch the movies, rated PG-13), doing so may give greater insight in the course.
Please register here, so we can share the Zoom information with you!

PARENT HAPPY HOUR (GROUP
FACILITATORS: MIKE KRAFT,
JEN SULLIVAN AND AMY SCHAFFER)
The St. Bart's Parent Happy Hour provides parents with the opportunity to check in, say hello, and get to know other parents in our parish community. The Happy Hour will be a place to socialize (virtually for now!), support one another, and serve those in need. We will share struggles and successes in parenting, as well as tips and strategies for navigating issues such as social media/screen time, school/social emotional struggles, setting and managing boundaries, and how to maintain peace and sanity in our households during these particularly trying times. Guest speakers, with specific areas of parenting expertise, may also be invited to some of our meetings. Additionally, we will discuss and plan for service opportunities - both for individual families and as a parish group. We are open to suggestions for discussion topics/areas of interest. We hope to "see" you at our first meeting (First week of June, dates/time TBD) - keep an eye out for the announcement in the parish news. All are welcome, invite your friends!

FROM THE MUSIC MINISTRY
It has been nine weeks of providing music remotely from my home for our livestreamed Masses. As we begin our re-entry into the church for liturgies, Masses will now be livestreamed from the church every Sunday at 9:45 AM. Providing remote music has been a journey, and as with many things in life, just when you start to really get the hang of it, things are ready to change! I want to thank Joseph Nedder for all of his assistance with sound equipment as we got the remote process going, as he jumped in to improve our initial attempts at transmission via phones only and really perfected our attempts to sound like Father Derek and I were in the same room. I would also like to thank Joe and Victoria Nedder, for providing quality assurance control and support throughout the complicated process! I will miss being present for all of you in this way, but I am glad that our music ministry is moving back to where it properly should be, which is in the church. Whether you will be in the church or watching from home as we go forward, you will notice that the music programming may seem different. There is no congregational singing allowed at this time due to concerns about virus transmission, so you will only hear a cantor and an organ or piano. You may notice that the parts of the Mass will be spoken, so as to ensure that there isn’t any singing. It is quite something to have one of the foundations of music ministry turned upside down, that instead of inviting participation we are trying to guarantee no participation! Please know that the music you do hear will be presented, as always, with the goal of praising God and growing closer to God. Even if you can’t sing, you can listen to the words and sing within your heart. And know that this is only for now, and we look forward to the time when the whole church will be singing with us again.

NEEDHAM KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS'
LEAVE NO NEIGHBOR BEHIND PROGRAM
Not since The Great Depression has hunger been a more
threatening issue in our community and in our
country. With millions of our friends and neighbors
having lost their jobs, food pantries are being
overwhelmed by the need. The Needham Knights of
Columbus Fr. Daniel J. Kennedy Council is rising to this
heartbreaking challenge. We are encouraging our friends
and neighbors to write a check in an amount you can
afford to The Needham K of C and mail it to our hall at
Needham K of C Council 1611, 1211 Highland Ave.,
Needham, MA 02492. We will collect these monies for
as long as the overwhelming need exists, and deliver
weekly checks to our local food pantries to be used to fill
the shelves and help our local families until our world
begins to heal, and things return to normal.
To learn more about this effort, please
visit www.needhamkofc.org. Please pray for our
neighbors and our world.
