“Church” in Greek means convocation, or assembly in

Latin, because all are called to be members of it.

TRUE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY

Can you imagine a world such as the one put before us in today’s scripture readings? Communities of believers everywhere would support and encourage one another and be identified as Christians by the way they love each other. It would be a world with no tears, no death and mourning, no crying out in pain. “Behold, I make all things new,” we hear the Son of God say in the second reading from the book of Revelation (21:5).

Is this world of John’s vision only imaginary? Are these faithful followers for whom Jesus prayed only a savior’s dream? Today they are put before us as a worthy goal. How much closer can we come to this vision of a true Christian community in our lives today?

4/20 To form a family is to be a part of God’s dream, to join him in building a world where no one will feel alone. 4/19 The royal road to peace is to see others not as enemies to be opposed but as brothers and sisters to be embraced.

4/18 We pray for the earthquake victims in Ecuador and Japan. May God and all our brothers and sisters give them help and support. 4/17 Each vocation in the Church has its origin in the compassionate gaze of Jesus, who forgives us and calls us to follow Him. 4/16 Today is Benedict XVI’s birthday. Let us remember him in our prayers and thank God for giving him to the Church and the world.

Local Archdiocese News

Irish farmer named Muldoon lived alone in the countryside with a small dog that he loved and doted on. After many long years of faithful companionship, the dog finally died, so the farmer went to the parish priest and said, “Father, me dear old dog is dead. Could you be saying a Mass for him?”

The priest replied, “I'm so very sorry to hear about your dog's death. But unfortunately I can't say Mass for the poor creature”

Muldoon said, “I understand, Father, I do. I guess I'll go to that new denomination down the road; no tellin’ what they believe. Do you think $500 is enough to donate for the service?”

The priest replied, “Why didn't you tell me that your dog was a Catholic?” THE BOOK OF CATHOLIC JOKES, by Deacon Tom Sheridan published by ACTA Publications, Chicago, Ill
