Parish Mission Statement

St. Barbara Parish carries on the faith tradition estab-lished in 1894 by our Slovenian and German ancestors. Like our founders, we are called by Baptism to live as ex-amples of Catholic faith and values, and as witnesses of Christ in the world. Our parish is small in size but great in heart. We are a diverse community who together seek to strengthen faith through liturgy and education, and through service to community in charity. We strive to love God with all our hearts and minds.

Pray for the Sick

Pray for the sick of our parish, our family and friends, especially Ted Long, Leslie Joyce, An-drea Littlejohn, Elizabeth McKeever, Elaine Fields, Joan Crum, Geoff Skundrich, Karen Re-crosio, Gloria Fortunato, Edna Koczaja, John Pulford, Mary Rosato, Ann Mary Mazzocco, Kathy D’Amico, Sophie Kramzer, and those in nursing homes and their caregivers; the return of inac-tive members of our parish to the practice of their faith; the respect of all human life and the end of abor-tions. We pray for the safety of our troops, their safe return and for their families at home. Call the rectory office if you are homebound or in a nursing home and would like to receive Communion or if you are a patient in a hospital and would like a visit from a priest, please call 412.221.5152.

JOHN THE BAPTIST

Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense cele-bration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the “precursor” of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John’s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming.

Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John’s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: “You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory” (Isaiah 49:3). John’s humili-ty—“I am not he”—was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who followed. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — I will make you a light to the na-tions (Isaiah 49:1-6). Psalm — I praise you for I am wonderfully made (Psalm 139). Second Reading — John heralded his coming by proclaiming a baptism of repentance (Acts 13:22-26). Gospel — John is his name (Luke 1:57-66, 80). For You Will Go Before the Lord to Prepare the Way – Today in the Church we celebrate the Birth of Saint John the Baptist, the great forerunner who was sent to announce the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ and prepare the way for him to fulfill his work in the world. John the Baptist never sought to put the attention on himself, but al-ways pointed the way to Jesus, whom the prophets had foretold would come to save God’s people. He was a faithful instrument of God who desired to de-crease so that the power and love of Jesus at work in the lives of his people could increase. Since Christ has already come into the world we can’t be his fore-runners, but we can prepare the way for him to enter into the hearts and lives of others. The witness of our prayer, the example of our lives and the encourage-ment of our words for others can turn their hearts to greater trust in God and his grace at work for them. As we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! may we seek to prepare the way for others, and be open to the ways in which they will work to make ready the path for God in our hearts. Visit onmis-sionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay in-formed.

Golden Wedding Anniversary - If you and your spouse are celebrating your 50th wedding anniversary any time this year and would like to be invited to the Diocesan Celebration at St. Paul Cathedral on Sunday, October 7 at 2:30 PM, please call the rectory at 412-221-5152 or drop a note in the collection basket no later than Sunday August 5.
