Dear Families and Friends of St Augustine’s Parish School We hope that all of our families survived the heat of Week 5 and are looking forward to slightly more temperate weather. The children are looking forward to being able to play outside this week. STUDENT LEADERS Last Thursday night (2nd March) we were privileged to enjoy a beautiful liturgy and commissioning of our Year 7 leaders in the Chapel. We thank the families and the children for making this occasion very meaningful and a true acknowledgement of the importance of student leadership in a Catholic school. We congratulate Mrs Rivas and the Year 6/7 team for preparing such an inspiring liturgy and refreshing supper to conclude this very special occasion. ZOO SNOOZE The Year 5 team are putting the finishing touches in preparation for Zoo Snooze in Week 7. Teachers and children will be sleeping at the zoo, one night for each class. The children will experience night walks in the safety of the zoo and many of the behind the scenes activities that make the zoo such a rich learning environment for children and a sanctuary for animals. PARENT INVOLVEMENT & AGM In the last two weeks we have conducted induction and training for parents and grandparents who wish to volunteer within our school. During this training the volunteers learn about protocols as well as their responsibilities for working in a Child Safe Environment. The number of people volunteering in our school is pleasing. We strongly encourage you to consider nominating for the School Board. As people come to the end of their term, we have a number of vacancies on the School Board. The School Board meets twice per term at night. Information about the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and a nomination form are in this newsletter. There are also a number of sub-committees of the School Board that you may wish to be a part of. If you are unable to commit to the requirements of School Board membership, you may wish to consider coming along to the Parents & Friends meetings and activities. These generally take place during the day. The Parents & Friends host coffee two mornings a week,

at 9.00 am on Mondays and Thursdays in the OSHC room. All parents and friends are welcome. This is a great way to meet other parents in the school. SHROVE TUESDAY AND CARNEVALE Speaking of volunteers, without a band of volunteers we would not have been able to celebrate Shrove Tuesday with pancakes for everyone. A big thank you to Joyce Mee and many, many parent helpers for mixing, making and cooking hundreds of pancakes. It is a tradition that the children have come to expect on this day every year. While it was a hot day, we managed to have our Carnevale Parade before the day became too warm. The children were out in force in their various masks they’ve been busily making. It is always such a joyous way to end ‘Ordinary Time’ before beginning the much more reflective liturgical mood of Lent. ASH WEDNESDAY AND LENT Wednesday 1st March was Ash Wednesday, the first day of the Church season of Lent. Our Years 4 to 7 celebrated with Mass in the church. They began with a song, ‘Diamonds’ by Hawk Nelson:

“But here in the ashes, I’m finding treasure,

He’s making Diamonds out of us…”.

During Lent we take time to reflect on our lives, what needs to change, how is my relationship with God going, am I remembering to pray, am I doing enough for others? The symbol of the ashes as a

sign of penance is ancient, being mentioned in both the Old Testament and by Jesus in the Gospels. The Receptions to Year 3s celebrated Ash Wednesday with liturgies in their classes. Their focus was on ‘Saying Yes to Jesus’. Lent is also the time when we support the outreach of Project Compassion. PROJECT COMPASSION Project Compassion is a special awareness and fundraising project of Caritas Australia. Every year during Lent, Catholics and Catholic schools around Australia learn about needs in different countries and how we can contribute to supporting them. This is part of our outreach to support others. Every class has a Project Compassion money box and the children are invited to put their change or spare coins in as part of our fundraising effort. More about Project Compassion and the work of Caritas can be found at the following link:

SPORTS DAY With Sports Day fast approaching, Thursday 23rd March, our House Captains were announced and presented with their badges at Whole School Prayer on Monday morning. We trust that they will be fine role models and leaders in our school, not only on Sports Day but for the rest of the year. We congratulate them on this very privileged and special role within our school.

Blessings

Georgia Dennis, Josette Charles,

Kerri Dent & Joyce Mee

ST AUGUSTINE’S PARISH SCHOOL – SCHOOL BOARD My name is Andrea Smith and I am the acting Chairperson of the St Augustine’s Parish School – School Board. I am writing to you to encourage you to think about becoming a member of the St Augustine’s School Board. I have been involved with the School Board for the past three

Performing Arts News – Paula Giugliano Wakakirri: Preparations have begun for this year’s entry into Wakakirri (primary school story-dance challenge).

Participating students have been placed into 3 groups to help rehearsals run smoothly (Performance Group 1, Performance Group 2 and Backstage Group 3). Secret Garden- Salisbury Excursion Year 6/7- Monday 27th February 2017 Review by Amber Kearney 6-7SH Today we went to the Secret Garden in Salisbury. It was a really fun excursion filled with lots of activities. I enjoyed

watching Jim the Stuntman and all his cool tricks. The biggest highlight was probably the show and trying to find

the jewels in the sand. I would like to go on Sunday for the Family Fun day or if it wasn’t so hot as it was today! I

think if the weather was cooler then it would have been even more fun, otherwise it was an awesome excursion.

Review by Zachary McKinnon 6-7SH We watched a guy called Stunt Man Jim. He did some crazy stunts and then we did some karate and I really

enjoyed the stunts. My biggest highlight was when Stunt Man Jim went on a unicycle and juggled 2 flames and a

knife!

Sports and games Year level:

Literacy, Numeracy Talking about sport with your child gives you lots of chances to build vocabulary and math skills. Here are a few things you can practise with your child as you play and talk about sport together:

using prepositions – eg describing where the ball went (past the goal, through my legs, over his head, onto the roof)

turning verbs into nouns – eg bowl/bowler, pass/passing, tackle/tackling

understanding chance – eg the chance of a coin landing on heads, the chance of rolling a six on the dice, the chance of scoring a goal

estimating area – eg of the swimming pool, sports field, netball court or dance studio

talking about time – eg how long a game is played, how much time is left in the match

adding up time – eg how much time your child spends on sport / music / other outside-school activities each week

using fractions – eg how many quarters have been played in the football match, how many quarters remain
