Lock Down

Cookbook!!

We are starting an exciting new initiative this week that is going to run over the next couple of months and we really hope that everyone will participate from the youngest to the oldest mem-bers of our community.

You may remember that some years ago, when we were trying to raise funds for the Annexe we put together a cookbook of the recipes donated by the congre-gation.

Unbelievably that was nearly 10 years ago and we thought it would be timely to create an up to date version which will reflect life in lockdown for our commu-nity. The plan is that this book will be launched at the party we will have when we are all able to get back together. The aim is that we will keep the cost of the book to around £5 if we think we could sell 100 copies1

So, get your thinking hats on.

What we would like you to do is to come up with a couple of rec-ipes. Maybe one that you are really missing or something that you used to cook in times gone by and/or a recipe that you have maybe developed whilst you had a bit of times on yours hands. What we would really like is it to be a joint project to involve all of us.

You can either email your reci-pes to Debbie or, if you would prefer to hand write it, just let me know and I will pick it up from your doorstep when I am out on a walk! Once we have all the recipes together Jenny and I (albeit distantly) will sit down and see what we can create!

We really would like everyone to participate so please get your recipes to me.

May Camp is happening!

May Camp is targeted at School Years 7-10 (age 11-15) with a leadership stream for Years 11-13 (age 16-18). Every year hun-dreds of young people from across Sussex meet for a week-end of worship, music, teaching, discipleship, sports, games, music and much much more. They were planning to hold it this year at Plumpton over the Spring bank holiday May, 22nd - 25th May. For the last 3 years we have tak-en a group of young people from St Augustine’s. This is a wonder-ful opportunity for them and do click on the link below to see how valuable it is to the young people in this diocese.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=6&v=wYvGhUZLfIo

&feature=emb_logo

They are all obviously very disap-pointed not to be going this year BUT it is happening on line. “We may not be able to meet physical-ly this year, but May Camp 2020 will be LIVE Online! The pro-gramme is set out below and you can find us on the link below. We are looking forward to see-ing you all again in person at the May 2021 Camp!

West Sussex County

Council Survey

WSCC want to know how coronavirus is affecting us all:

In these difficult and unprece-dented times, it is crucial that we keep connected with how our residents are feeling about the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It is important that we have a good understanding of how you are interpreting na-tional guidance, how the pan-demic is impacting your life and your use of our services in West Sussex, and the concerns that you may have during this time and when looking at the future. We are grateful for your time in completing this survey, which should take no-longer than 10-15 minutes to complete. The responses you provide will be used by West Sussex County Council to help inform our response to Coronavirus going forward. Please note, when we refer to the coronavirus pandemic throughout the survey, we mean the current Coronavirus pan-demic, caused by COVID-19

Thy Kingdom Come As you will have seen from the mid-week bulletin Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer move-ment that invites Christians around the world to pray be-tween Ascension Day (21 May) and Pentecost (31 May) for more people to come to know Jesus. Praying for people to come to know the love, hope and peace found in Christ is at the heart of Thy Kingdom Come. Daily Prayer for Thy Kingdom Come is a great way to set up regular, daily pat-terns of prayer to hold these people in prayer – whether you are doing so on your own, as a household, or joining with a small group or as a church virtually. You will find links in the last mid-week bulletin and also 5 ways to get involved on Pages 16 and 17.

..and Prayers at the Cathedral

Bishop Martin has sent the follow-ing message: "We are also preparing to cele-brate the festival of of Pentecost and the renewal in our lives of the gift of the Holy Spirit. This is also the season of "Thy Kingdom come" as we long for the people of our nation to respond with joy to the good news of Jesus Christ. In order to deepen our prayer for the people of the diocese in the time of this pandemic and in the nine days of prayer that form a novena between Ascension Day and Pentecost I invite you and your congregation to join me in prayer each day at 12.00 noon for around 15 minutes in a live streaming of intercessions , wor-ship and silence from the Bishop's chapel here in Chichester." All parishes will be prayed for be-tween Fri 22nd and Sat 30th May. Prayers for the parishes of Cuck-field Deanery will be on Sat 30th May. https://www.chichester.anglican.org/

Common Worship Morning Prayer

Easter 7 Sunday 24th May 2020

10.00 am

Welcome

Reverend Lucy Hollingsworth

Hymn 1: Jesus Shall Reign - 301

Jesus shall reign where’er the sun

Doth His successive journeys run; His Kingdom stretch from shore to shore, Till moons shall wax and wane no more.

To Him shall endless prayer be made. And princes throng to crown His head, His name like sweet perfume shall rise

With every morning sacrifice.

People and realms of every tongue

Dwell on His love with sweetest song; And infant voices shall proclaim

Their early blessings on His name.

Blessings abound where’er He reigns: The prisoner leaps to lose his chains, The weary find eternal rest, And all the sons of want are blessed.

Let every creature rise and bring

Peculiar honours to our King; Angels descend with songs again, And earth repeat the loud Amen!

Isaacs Watts (1674-1748)

Alleluia, Christ is risen! All He is risen indeed, Alleluia!

Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. All He has given us new life and hope by raising Jesus from the dead.

We sit or kneel for the following prayer:

All: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Forgiveness & reconciliation:

The grace of God has dawned upon the world with healing for all. Let us come to him, in sorrow for our sins, seeking healing and salvation.

All Lord our God, In our sin we have avoided your call. Our love for you is like a morning cloud

Like the dew that goes away early. Have mercy on us; Deliver us from judgement; Bind up our wounds and revive us; In Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The president declares God’s forgiveness

Almighty God, who in Jesus Christ has given us

a Kingdom that cannot be destroyed, forgive us our sins, open our eyes to God’s truth, strengthen us to do God’s will, and give us the joy of His kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

Sing: Celebrating God’s forgiveness

Glory be to God in heaven, Peace to those who love him well; On the earth let all his people

Speak his grace, his wonders tell. Lord, we praise you for your glory, Mighty Father, Heaven’s King; Hear our joyful adoration

And accept the thanks we bring.

Only Son of God the Father, Lamb who takes our sin away, Now with him in triumph seated - For your mercy, Lord we pray. Jesus Christ, most high and holy, Saviour, you are God alone

In the glory of the Father

With the Spirit: Three in One!

Hearing God’s word: (Today’s New International Version)

Acts 1:6-14

Then they gathered round him and asked him, ‘Lord, are you at this time go-ing to restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He said to them: ‘It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’

7

After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. ‘Men of Galilee,’ they said, ‘why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.’ Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city. When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

1 Peter 5: 6-11

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roar-ing lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

John 17:1-11

After Jesus said this, he looked towards heaven and prayed: ‘Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eter-nal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you be-fore the world began.

‘I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.

This is the word of the Lord

All: Thanks be to God

Hymn 2: My Jesus, My Saviour (Shout to the Lord) - 935

My Jesus, my Saviour

Lord there is none like You

All of my days I want to praise

The wonders of Your mighty love

My comfort, my shelter

Tower of refuge and strength

Let every breath, all that I am

Never cease to worship You

Shout to the Lord all the Earth, let us sing

Power and majesty, praise to the King

Mountains bow down and the seas will roar

At the sound of Your name

I sing for joy at the work of Your hands

Forever I'll love You, forever I'll stand

Nothing compares to the promise I have In You

Oh nothing compares to the promise I have

Nothing compares to the promise I have

The Sermon

Reverend Lucy Hollingsworth

Affirming our Faith

Do you believe and trust in God the Father?

All I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ?

All I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit?

All I believe in the Holy Spirit, The holy, catholic church, The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body

And the life everlasting. Amen

The Prayers

Merciful Father

All: Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

All: Our Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done; On earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom, The power and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn 4: Lord Enthroned in Heavenly Splendour - 352

Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour, First-begotten from the dead, Thou alone, our strong Defender, Liftest up Thy people's head. Alleluia! Alleluia! Jesus, true and living Bread!

Here our humblest homage pay we, Here in loving reverence bow; Here for faith’s discernment pray we, Lest we fail to know Thee now. Alleluia! Alleluia! Thou art here, we ask not how.

Though the lowliest form doth veil Thee

As of old in Bethlehem, Here as there Thine angels hail Thee

Branch and Flower of Jesse’s stem. Alleluia! Alleluia! We in worship join with them.

Paschal Lamb! Thine offering, finished

Once for all when Thou wast slain, In its fulness undiminished

Shall forevermore remain. Alleluia! Alleluia! Cleansing souls from every stain.

Life-imparting heavenly Manna, Stricken Rock, with streaming side, Heaven and earth with loud hosanna

Worship Thee, the Lamb who died. Alleluia! Alleluia! Risen, ascended, glorified!

Help prepare a sermon....

Since it will be so difficult to meet on Sunday evening, even virtually, I thought I could fol-low the example of our schools and set some homework!

I am due to preach again on June 14th and would like you to help me prepare!

The reading are;

Psalm 100

Matthew 9,35-10,8

Romans 5, 1-8

So instead of meeting together for Kairos I would like you to consider the following questions:

1. What one thought, verse or sentence stands out to you and why?

2. How do these readings influence what it means to you to be a Christian today?

3. How do these readings influence what it means to be 'Church' today?

Your contributions will be invaluable to me and I hope valuable to you too!

Guidelines:

1. Every comment will remain completely confidential and anonymous contributions are welcome.

2. I am not looking for doctrinal or creedal statements, rather thoughts and ideas in any format - (Not an essay)

3. Questions, doubts and uncertainties are especially welcome.

4. Please post, email or text your thoughts by June 7th to me give time to prepare

and record the talk:

24 Chestnuts Close Lindfield RH162AU- 07976459925- [email protected]

I look forward to hearing from you

Many thanks

In these unusual times we need to find new and innovative ways of staying in touch with each other and deepening the level of fellowship we enjoy. To achieve this, it would be good if every household, with internet access, in the church fel-lowship was able to join into events via BlueJeans – the audio and video conferenc-ing app.

The White Cottage Home Group are successfully meeting in this way and, on Sun-days, a good number of people join in with the (slightly chaotic) ‘after church virtu-al coffee’ session.

There are three ways of setting yourself up for the church BlueJeans meetings:

On your laptop or desktop, follow the link: https://bluejeans.com/8976356204 and download the BlueJeans app to your computer.

On your smart phone, download the BlueJeans app and install it on your phone.

Then, to access a meeting enter the ID code 8976356204.

On your landline (audio only), to join a meeting dial 0203 6950613 and when requested enter the meeting ID of 8976356204 followed by the # key – calls will cost you the normal rate for your phone.

You will notice that in all cases the meeting ID remains the same 8976356204.

If you have already successfully connected to one of these, please email Peter Mansell, [email protected], to let him know.

If you have not so far connected or are having problems connecting please phone Peter on 01444 459990 so he can ensure you are set up correctly and ready to ‘connect’ with the church fellowship.

This will allow Peter to build up a directory of who is connected, so we can plan fu-ture ‘virtual meetings’ more effectively.

Thought for the Day

They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. (Acts 1.14)

Another photo of Cristo Redentor – Christ the Redeemer – that famous statue in Rio de Janeiro;

with the phrase ‘pray together’ projected onto it in various languages.

Can you imagine the uproar if we did this to Nelson’s column, or the London Eye? Of course neither of those monuments is one depicting faith,

but still, it’s not something we would ever imagine doing here in England, is it?

Not only are Christians now in a minority, but even within the churches there are disagreements and rejection.

I find that rather sad.

For me, it just brings home the importance of that simple message…

the one we see in the verse above

pray together. We need to be united as Christians. We need to pray together.

Ascension Day is Thursday…May 21st

…and between Ascension and Pentecost, the Church of England runs a programme of prayer called Thy Kingdom Come.

Not just nationally, but also churches around Haywards Heath have services and events to complement this initiative.

Debbie will have put links for the websites in the newsletter this week, and I encourage you to take a look at the prayers and activities in these pages

including joining Lucy for Morning Prayer on Thursdays.

Find something that works for you and join us to pray together

Thought for the Day

I asked God to take away my pride, And God said, ‘No.’

He said it was not for Him to take away, But for me to give up.

I asked God to grant me patience, And God said, ‘No.’

He said, ‘Patience is the product of trials. It isn’t granted, it’s earned.’

I asked God to give me happiness, And God said, ‘No.’

He said, ‘I give blessings. Choosing to be happy is up to you.’

I asked God to spare me pain, And God said, ‘No.’

He said, ‘Suffering draws you away from worldly cares, And brings you closer to me.’

I asked God to make my spirit grow. And God said, ‘No.’

He said, ‘You must grow on your own, But I will prune you to make you more fruitful.’

I asked God if He loved me. And God said, ‘Yes.’

‘I gave you my only beloved Son who died for you, so that someday you can be in heaven with me.’

I asked God to help me love others

As much as He loves me. And God said,

‘Ah, finally, you have the idea!’

Prayer for the Week Ahead

Father God Give us clarity in our minds,

Strength in our work Discernment in all we do,

Rest as we sleep, And peace in our minds.

Be with those who need help more than we do ourselves, And help us to see what we can offer from your love.

Amen.

Open Doors continues it's work to serve per-secuted Christians throughout a world where the spread of coronavirus is having a devastat-ing effect. Lockdown in poorer countries often means that many Christians no longer have incomes and can't buy food. On top of this, Christians are often ignored when official aid is distributed. In the slums of India, for instance, where many of the country's Christians live, the congregations are very poor and each day can only earn what they need to survive. No work for the day means no food for the day. Pastors cannot go to work and they cannot visit their church members and their own fami-

lies are suffering because they rely on offerings for their income. Open Doors partners in India are doing what they can to provide for their most basic need which is food. We are asked to pray that :

Open Doors partners will be able to reach those most in need, bringing them food and hope

That God would give faith and resilience to those suffering the effects of lockdown around the world

For protection against the tactics of Hin-du extremists in India
