READING CATHOLIC COMMUNITY

Scripture for the week of July 21, 2019

Here’s a modern paradox for you. We have

technology that allows us to be constantly informed,

always accessible and able to find any information

we need in a few moments. We can communicate

with cell phones, pagers, computers, social network

sites, fax machines, landlines and even good old U.S.

mail. So how is it that the more people plug in, the

less informed and more isolated they become? We

are less social, less communicative, more apathetic

and more uninformed than ever before. Why do

such powerful tools fail us?

There is no easy answer to those questions, but

there is an easy way to remedy the problem. Unplug!

It’s time to reclaim the family dinner table, play

board games, have a discussion about world events,

read a newspaper together, talk to a neighbor and

walk or drive somewhere without our heads buried

in an iPod or text messages or BlueTooth. We need

to see and hear and talk to others. We need to

reconnect to people and give the batteries of life a

chance to recharge and renew us. If people find

religion difficult, perhaps it is because religion is a

communal experience of God and we have forgotten

how to be the community. Somewhere, sometime,

people will research the electronic connection and

discover more joy and more satisfaction in sharing a

cup of coffee and a good chat. Don’t wait for the

details. Be an unplugged human again!

Ceiling Repair - Update

The ceiling repair is coming along! The choir loft is all DONE with the plastic pretty much all removed from the area. Preparation work continues to ready the remaining surfaces for painting. As seen in these pictures, all has been protected with plastic covering. If you look closely at the stained glass window of St. Agnes, you will see how it is covered with protective plastic, creating a hazy, fuzzy appearance. How apropos this picture is for our faith in life: often the stresses, demands, pitfalls, can create a “fog” in

our life… can make it hard for us to “see” where we are going… HOWEVER, even through the “fog” the Light of Christ shines through, we have only to believe, to desire, to respond.

New Email Addresses for the Reading Catholic Community Staff

The Reading Catholic Community staff has new email addresses! See pages 2 and 3 for a listing of all staff and general inquiry addresses. You may have already received an email from us alerting you to this change and also asking you to share a response on “Why I Love My Catholic Faith”. Many thanks to those who responded! Below are some of the comments:

• Welcome…. as we continue on our shared journey of building the Kingdom!

• Just to say...I’ve embraced our “new name”, Reading Catholic Community…. I do think that if we BELIEVE we are the Body of Christ, then the Spirit will enable us to make this happen. It’s much more than about a “building”, it’s about a worshiping people gathered...to do the work God calls us to do. Spirit of God lead us!

• My Faith supports me in growing into my best self so I can better serve my community.

• We will go to both parishes…. Sure things will work out as one happy group.

• I am pleased thus far with how the collaborative has been working. I have made some new friends in faith through the Lenten study group at St. Agnes and by attending some weekday Masses. Just as I have felt and seen in churches I have visited in my travels on vacations here in the USA and abroad, we all just want to have a meaningful encounter with God. That, of course, happens through the Eucharist, the Word, and fellow worshippers. We are very fortunate to have the two parishes so close geographically making it easier to facilitate joint experiences.

Baptisms at St. Agnes Parish

Baptisms are such a joyous event, in fact, baptism is

also a “birthday” since it is birth into the new life in

Christ! Baptisms are held at St. Agnes at 1PM on the

1st and 3rd Sunday of every month. Baptisms can

also be celebrated at one of the Sunday Masses.

Baptism at

Mass is a

wonderful way

for the ENTIRE

faith

community to

share in the

joy of receiving

the baby (or

into our Catholic Faith. Let us know if you wish to

schedule your child’s baptism!

SATURDAY NIGHT CLUB - We’re Back in September!

We hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful summer season… But don’t forget, that come the Fall, the

Saturday Night Club will be back!!

Our first event will be Saturday, September 21, 6:30pm to 9:00pm. We meet in the St. Athanasius PAC.

Saturday Night Club is a social group open to all members of the Reading Collaborative as well as any

members of the Reading and nearby communities. The mission is to provide a venue for people to get to

know one another beyond Mass and to include friends and family who may be encouraged to socialize and

enlarge the Congregation. Each month on the third Saturday of the month, we meet at the St. Athanasius

Parish Activity Center from 6:30 to 9:00 pm. There are always planned activities but all are welcome to just

come by for refreshments and to “hang out”. Past activities have included: Trivia, Music Bingo, Floral

Arranging, Painting Night, Family Feud, St. Patrick’s Day Party, etc. etc. etc. Plan to join us as we continue to

COLLABORATE socially and bring our two parishes as well as the community to a new social level. Like us on

Facebook (Saturday Night Club) to stay informed or check the bulletin.
