Bishop’s Appeal Sharing God’s Grace Did you know the Diocese of Green Bay supports a mission parish in a Caribbean
country called Dominican Republic? The
parish is called Elias Pina, and it’s
parishioners have abundant faith but little
water, electricity, or money. Our Diocese
helps the mission in Elias Pina. It
provides necessary resources by attending
to the parishioners’ physical and spiritual
needs.
Although you may be unable to physically
to travel to the Dominican Republic to
help these parishioners, your support of
the Bishop’s Appeal shares God’s grace
with them. Please respond to the call to
share your gifts with others by giving a
gift to the Bishop’s Appeal.

Ask Father:
This week’s question: “How did Rome come to be the
center of the Church’s world when everything took
place in and around the Holy Land?”
This week’s question was submitted recently by someone
who had been watching the Bible series on TV. Judging from
what I’ve heard about the TV miniseries, I’m going to assume that
it provides an overview of the story of the Bible from Creation
through the Paschal Mystery (life-death-resurrection of Jesus) –
that is to say, from Genesis through the Gospels.
It is certainly true that the theo-geographical focal point
of all that history is: Jerusalem. Everything that happened from
Creation through Ascension happened either in or in relation to
Jerusalem – the site of the Temple. Adam and Eve, Noah,
Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Joshua, Ruth, Samuel, Saul, David,
Solomon, Elijah, Jezebel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Judith, Esther, Ezra, Judas – these people and all their stories are about preparing
for Jerusalem, being in Jerusalem, and/or not being in Jerusalem.
So, as your question astutely asks: If all this Bible stuff is
centered in Jerusalem, how did Rome come to be the center of the
Church? One thing the Bible is crystal clear about: Jesus is the
focal point of the whole Bible – He is the hinge of all human
history. Just as from Adam & Eve all the way through Solomon,
everything was preparing for the Temple in Jerusalem – so the
Temple in Jerusalem was itself a preparation for Jesus (the True
Temple) and the Church (the New Jerusalem).
Jesus lived His human life in and around Jerusalem; but
He didn’t even come in the flesh until 2 particular world events
had taken place outside of Jerusalem. One was the empire of the
Greeks under Alexander the Great – which caused one language
(Greek) to be spoken throughout the known world. The second
was the Roman Empire – which built roads spanning the entire
known world (and all of them leading to Rome). With these 2 world-wide happenings (under God’s providence), the stage was
set for Jesus and His Church.
Just before His Ascension, Jesus gave His Apostles 2
orders: (1) go and stay in Jerusalem until you receive the Holy
Spirit [Pentecost!], and (2) afterward, go and make disciples of all
nations. In order to accomplish this last great commission, Peter
and Paul (the 2 great Apostles) took the Church to Rome – which
was the capital of the world. There lived Caesar (the counterfeit
son of god); and so there Peter and Paul brought Jesus – the True
King and Son of God Most High. There, Peter and Paul poured
out their blood as martyrs for Jesus; and so there the Church of
God sprouted, grew, and blossomed. Jesus had come into the
world. The old Jerusalem faded into the background as the New
Jerusalem set sail and landed in Rome. From there, She has sailed
to every land – and, since all roads lead to Rome, Her children
have continued to call Rome home.
Thanks for another great question, and if you have more questions or a different way of looking at this, please sign on to
our website and post a response under the “Ask Father” section in
the “Forum” area. And keep those questions coming! May God
bless you this Easter and always!
Fr. Matt’s Corner:
... do you love me more than these? …
Happy Easter to all of you, my dear friends in
Christ! Even as the track and baseball and softball seasons
get underway (with snow still lingering on), I think we’re all
ready for a new start – the start of summer.
So it is with our faith as well, as we continue going
deeper into the mysteries of our faith this Easter season
(with 5 more weeks of Eastertide to come!). Easter is a
season of baptism – of new life – and as new life promises to
bud out in grass and flower and leaf, so our faith beckons us
to spring up in life. When Peter today hears that “It is the
Lord!” who has come to us, he immediately goes for
baptism, and jumped into the sea.
After he comes out of those baptismal waters, Jesus
came over and took the bread and gave it to him. That’s
what He does for us at every Mass as well – He takes the
bread, changes it into His body, and gives it to us to eat. So
far, it’s all been good for us: we get in a nice bathing and
we are fed with the Bread of Life – pretty easy, eh? Jesus
has done all the work (sacrificing His Body and Blood – His
life – for us). But now comes His challenge.
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to
Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than
these?” Uh oh, why is He asking this? Jesus has shown us
God’s love for us, and He has shown us that His love
conquers all – even death! He now invites us into the life of
God – a life of self-sacrificing love. Not only are we not to
offend God by stealing, lying, gossiping, and other obvious
heinous crimes against God’s gift. Now we must do more:
Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” In other words,
“Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least
brothers of mine, you did for me.” Because God has loved
us with everything, our response must be everything – not
just avoiding evil (that’s the merely obvious), but also doing
good.
Jesus promises that following Him will cost us
everything that is not God: for Peter, that would mean
family, house, livelihood, liberty, and even his earthly life.
But He also promises that following Him is the only way to
true joy and eternal life. Peter and the other disciples would
later be found rejoicing that they had been found worthy to
suffer dishonor for the sake of the name of Jesus. So it was
for Jesus Himself, so it was with Peter, and so it is now with
Peter’s current successor, Pope Francis. May we be with
Peter and the other disciples in following Jesus – rejoicing
that we have been found worthy to suffer dishonor for the
sake of the name
Peace to all of you, my friends, this Holy Day, and
to all who love the Lord in simplicity of heart,
Fr. Matt
