Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 1, 2018

From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Friends in Christ,

This coming week we celebrate the birthday of our wonderful country, the United States of America. Parish offices will be closed on Wednesday, July 4th, and Mass will be celebrated at 8:15 a.m.

I am presently in Italy leading a pilgrimage with some parishioners and other pilgrims from around the United States. Please continue to pray for me and I remember each of you in prayer daily.

Vacations are wonderful things! Or terrible . . . depending on how we approach them. I am a firm believer that the life you live daily is how you will vacation. If a person is manic about life, constantly try-ing to do five things at once, running here and there, with no time to rest, that is exactly how that per-son will vacation. If a person takes time for himself or herself, finds peaceful pockets in a busy day, seeks to have a prayer life and a personal life with loved ones and friends, then vacation will be an extension of that.

I learned a long time ago, after having the wonderful privilege of traveling all across this planet and continuing to do so, that keeping it simple is important. I try to do that in my daily life and I strive to do that on my vacation. This is a very important tip for travel and cannot be overestimated: travel lightly!

What does that mean exactly? Well, first of all, we are not moving to the destination, only visiting. So pack your bags and literally then look at all you have put in your bags and most likely remove half of what you are planning to take. On this trip to Italy I have a very small suitcase and a small backpack which I am bringing along. That is all. . . Really!

I put my clothes out on my bed, looked at all of them and then put some away. My suitcase is so small that it can fit into the overhead bin, so a wonderful thing is that I don’t have to go to retrieve my luggage at the end of the journey. The backpack with necessities for an overnight flight stays at my feet during the journey. I don’t carry snacks. I don’t carry books. The flight gives you all the food you will need for the eight or nine hours and international flights provide you with a million movies you can choose from. I have my prayer book on my IPhone along with a couple of books on audio through the Farmington Public Library, which costs me nothing. So I travel light and if I happen to run out of clothes, I simply wash them out in my hotel sink and hang them up overnight and they are ready in the morning.

So keeping it simple in life becomes keeping it simple on vacation. Secondly, do not over plan. I am a lucky man. As a priest, I get to travel free on these pilgrimages

because the tour company wants a priest to lead their Catholic groups, so they provide my flight, my hotel room, my food and even a stipend. Boy, life is good! Now, I approved the original itinerary for It-aly, and I have had the privilege of traveling to Italy many times, but I leave the journey in God’s hands. Every time I travel it is different. I have different pilgrims and therefore different personalities. I try to keep everyone focused on the fact that this is a pilgrimage, so it is not only a “trip” but a journey with Christ. Come to peace and enjoy what Christ has to show you. All too often on journeys, we always want to “get there.” The secret to travel is really enjoying the journey from beginning to end. Even enjoying the flight, believe it or not. Leave it all in God’s hands and let Him show you amazing things.

So have a basic itinerary, but be willing to bend. Don’t come back from vacation more stressed than when you left. That is not a vacation. That is a prison sentence!

Thirdly, enjoy the food, the culture, the traditions of where you are going. We tend to plan to go to a place, pay good money to go there and be there, and then decide we want to turn it into our own back yard. In Italy, I bet there will be at least one pilgrim who will not like the Italian food. And then will moan and complain that they asked for ice and they wouldn’t give him or her ice in their water. And then they’ll start eating stale pizza outside of the hotel because “food is too expensive in this country.” I mean, I have seen far too many pilgrims spend good money and travel all the way to Italy and then not eat the Italian food because “it tastes funny.”

Really??? We’re talking Italy, arguably the center of the greatest food humanity has ever put forth and you’re not going to eat it for a couple of weeks. Amazing but true. Sad but true.

I have eaten interesting cuisine in Uganda and Rwanda and remember having to pull out the small rocks from my rice in Uganda because the cook washed the rice in the river. It is the adventure of life that is so memorable. You’ll have the experience of a lifetime if you will eat the food, observe the tradi-tions and be open-minded on the people and the place. …..continued on next page

…...continued From The Pastor’s Desk

In Rome, do as the Romans do. And the same applies for anywhere in this country as well. If you travel to the South, be willing to eat grits with your eggs. They won’t kill you. You may not like them but you can always say you ate grits in Macon, Georgia, or wherever. It would be like my priest friends who come to visit me here and when they first come they say they can’t eat green or red chile. I tell them to at least try it. Then they can’t get enough of it. I have one priest friend who re-fused to eat it on two journeys to visit me and then on the third trip actually ate chips and salsa at one of my favorite restaurants. Now I send him a jar of that salsa each year for Christmas because he said he can’t get enough of it.

Keep it simple, don’t overplan and enjoy where you are. Those are three important points for having a successful journey and for having a successful life.

God bless each of you.

Sincerely in Christ,

Rev. Tim Farrell,

Pastor
