Last Month of School! May 2019
Dear St. Anthony Trojan Families, Spring is here--well, under the rain, at least! April came and went, and the
students, faculty, and staff at St. Anthony School certainly filled every minute of a
short month at school!
We have much to be thankful for here at SAS. The month started with a successful
session of student AIR testing. The first week of April was full of activity! Our
junior high school students enjoyed attending “Our Town”, a play at Magnificat
High School in Rocky River. Then, Mrs. Huss and the SAS Pre-School took a field
trip to explore the Lake Erie Nature Center! It’s hard to believe, but we rounded
off that weekend with the last Open House of the year on April 6! On Sunday,
April 7, St. Anthony School was honored by Bishop Perez’s presence at Mass for
Confirmation. It was a beautiful and heartfelt Mass with many memories.
Before Easter, Mrs. Delgado held Kindergarten screenings for new families, and
Ms. Wachholz and the fifth grade class presented the Stations of the Cross. Many
thanks to our PAC for a successful Easter Egg-stravaganza and for all of their hard
work on the Malley’s Fundraiser! Thanks for all that you do! We send a special
congratulations (and wow!) to our very talented students who auditioned for the
SAS talent show! We completed the month of April with a thoughtful school Mass
on April 29, just before beginning MAP testing.
May will bring our school year to an end. We have already celebrated First Holy
Communion with our 2nd
graders. It was a wonderful occasion! We are looking
forward to celebrating the Pre-School and Eighth Grade graduations. Finally,
Spirit Week will be an exciting and fun last week of school!
With many blessings,
Dr. Lucia Heddleson

Best of the Month in Pre-School & Kindergarten
Pre-School goes on a Field Trip!
The Pre-School class took an amazing field trip to The Lake Erie Nature and Science Center! The
students not only met, but also got to pet, some of the resident animals living at the center! The
animals included a rabbit, a snake, an owl and a chinchilla! Wow, they all felt so different! After
learning about and touching the smooth scales of the Corn snake, it was time to say goodbye. All of
the students stood up and stomped their feet so that the snake could feel their goodbye vibrations!
The students did this because the snake does not have ears for traditional hearing. It was SO fun!
Our Kindergarteners are
almost 1st Graders!
Greetings from Kindergarten! The month of April
just flew by and now we are in the home stretch
heading toward 1st grade. We are working hard and
trying to make every day count!
Our reading and science units in April were both
about weather. We learned about all of the many
different kinds of weather we have here on the lake
in Ohio! We learned about rainbows and how they
are formed and what the various types of clouds
mean. Our weekly “meteorologist” enjoyed sharing
the forecast each day.
We also used water color paints to create these lovely
Easter eggs. Such amazing artists!
Stay tuned for a very busy month of May!!
Best of the Month in Primary – Grades 1 & 2
1st Grade learns about plants!
We have been learning about plants this past month. We are learning the parts of the plants and their
function. We have learned what plants need in order to survive. This week we will be planting seeds and
writing our observations in a journal.
2nd Grade Measures Up! The Second Grade Class has started a Math chapter on measurement. We will be learning about estimating,
measuring, and what measuring tools would be appropriate for measuring objects. We will look at the
measurements of inches, feet, yards, centimeters, and meters.
Best of the Month in Middle School – Grades 3-4 3rd Grade learns about our Presidents!
This month third grade worked on researching presidents of their choice. They then had to design a stamp
for the president that they chose. Their stamp needed to have a design that incorporated an important part of
the president’s life. They were creative and did a great job with this.
4th Graders look closely at the 10 Commandments! In 4th grade, the students worked on a Ten Commandments mini project. They took a deeper look into
the meaning of each Commandment by applying it to their own life. It made them examine how they can
live the Commandments better and helped them identify things that could keep them from following
them. The 4th graders also had a chance to make illustrations either in the form of a bumper sticker, a
comic strip, or a picture showing how to live the Commandments. The goal of the activity was to make
the Ten Commandments relevant to their life so they can become closer to God.

Most of the fifth graders and two fourth graders (whose help was greatly appreciated) prayed the
Stations of the Cross by presenting the stations through the thoughts of the real people who witnessed
Jesus' suffering and death. The entire school was present, and the students did an amazing job of
conveying the various feelings of both Jesus' followers and His enemies. It was a moving spiritual
experience, and I am very proud of the seriousness of how they approached this prayer.
6th Grade creates
Hamsa Art! In the Middle East Hamsa Art is
very popular. It is beautiful but
also has a purpose. This art
features a hand with an eye on its
palm. In the folklore of Iraq and
surrounding areas the Hamsa is
supposed to protect people from
the curse of the Evil Eye. 6th grade
beautifully replicated these designs
using crayon and paint.
5th Grade shares the Stations of the Cross in a new perspective!
Best of the Month in Middle School – Grades 5-6
Best of the Month in Junior High – Grades 7-8
7th Grade teaches the
1st grade! 7th Grade spent some time with their
1st grade friends before Easter Break,
during Holy Week. We worked
together making a bracelet with the
Jelly Bean Prayer. Eight different
colored beads with special meanings
were added, one at a time, to a string
to complete the prayer. When we were
all finished, each student was able to
wear their bracelet and take a bag of
jelly beans home to talk with their
families about what we did in class.
We all had so much fun!
8th Grade shows what true leaders of the School look like! 8th grade has had a busy month! This month the 8th grade students were Confirmed by Bishop Perez,
which was a beautiful and memorable day for them. They also were in charge of helping Mrs. Hunt work
the book fair! It was so much fun having Clifford come to all of the rooms to take pictures with the
students. Then in Language Arts, they wrote a short story and converted it onto a Scratch presentation
where they coded conversations, actions, and story lines for their characters. Only one more month until
Graduation and this class is enjoying every opportunity that they are given to grow and spend time together.
