Dear Parishioners of st. anthony of PaDua church & annunciation of the BlesseD Virgin mary church,
Spring FairSt. Edmund School’s Spring Fair is this week. Please come out and join the fun, great togetherness and reunions for both parishioners & School alumni & friends.
Church Picnic at St. Anthony and Inclement Weather
As the Weather People forecasted inclement weather for last weekend, the St. Anthony Family Picnic was postponed for a latter time to be announced. It was good that we listened to the forecasters. The lightening affected St. Anthony’s lights. We had to do the 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. masses in candle light. In the middle of the 11:00 a.m. mass the electrician was able to manually set the dimmer panel to 30% illumination. After mass he was able to get it to 100 % illumination. At Annunciation there was no electric on the church campus. So the 9:00 a.m. mass was conducted by candlelight. One farmer mentioned that all he needed was one inch of rain. He got 12 inches instead. The lightening and rain were in great supply last weekend. We were very fortunate to be able to attend mass, to thank God for our blessings and to get our lives focused on the week ahead. May God’s blessings continue on us, as Jesus waits for our invitation to walk with us in our journey to the Heavenly Father.
Update on Diocesan Centennial CampaignAs Annunciation and St. Anthony were both in the Pilot Phase of the Diocesan Centennial Capital Campaign, we have received the second installment in our 30% rebate on February 17, 2017. Annunciation’s second rebate is $2,797.45, bringing the total rebates thus far to $6,638.66. St. Anthony’s second rebate is $29,751.04, bringing the total rebates thus far to $68,629.56. I thank all parishioners taking part in the Campaign. Please keep praying that everyone is able to fulfill his or her pledge. This is a very impressive outcome. We have much to be grateful. Thanks-be to God and may God continue to bless each and everyone!
ACTS RETREAT CELEBRATES 30TH ANNIVERSARYOn April 1-2, 2017, the Acts Retreat celebrated their 30th Anniversary in San Antonio, Texas. It began in Selma, Texas outside of San Antonio in 1987. ACTS Missions was organized in 1997 to oversee further development of the ACTS Retreat worldwide. Today, the ACTS program is in 74 dioceses in six countries. More than a million people have participated in the ACTS Retreats. Annunciation and St. Anthony share in this accomplishment with 14 retreats completed serving nearly 500 people. It is good that we all play a part in helping people come closer to God and Church.
New Diaconate Formation Program Begins for Diocese of Lafayette
Bishop Deshotel has approved the next Inquiry Phase Program of Permanent Deacons to begin in January 2018. If we have any men at either Annunciation or St. Anthony who are interesting in serving the Church as a Deacon, please come speak to me [Msgr. Romero]. The Office of Permanent Diaconate is currently pre-interviewing men for the Inquiry Phase. Together we can begin to discern your call and seek council from the Diaconate Office. First, one has to be already serving and busy in our parish, as the Deacon is one who serves. Other qualifications follow:

Gospel for the Fourth Sunday of Easter, Cycle A - John 10:1-10
“Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.” Jesus uses the image of a gate today to help us understand how we are to relate to him. He is our path to “pasture,” in other words, to the peace and prosperity that we long for. He shows us the way to find all that we need right there before us.
Some people, however, may think that it is better to avoid the trouble of finding the gate and thus choose to enter another way instead. But Jesus says, “Whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber.” Although this is all cast in the gentle terms of an analogy about sheep, the message is actually rather stern. Jesus is telling us that if we do not follow him, we are taking the wrong course of action. He is not suggesting a kind of relativistic principle that says, “Following me is one of many good options.” No. He is telling us that in order to “have life and have it more abundantly,” we must follow the path that goes by way of Christ.
This is not always the easiest path to follow. It might mean taking the long way around a situation instead of a shortcut. It might mean waiting a little while to get to that pasture instead of hopping the fence and finding it on our own terms. Insisting on using the gate may also make us look like fools to those around us. But to be truly faithful followers of Jesus, we need to trust that his way is the best way. We need to trust that, by letting him lead, we will ultimately end up in the best possible pasture. In our culture, it is becoming less and less popular to believe in one true religion, but as Christians we know that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.
Questions for the WeekJohn 10:1-10 - Jesus speaks of himself metaphorically: “I am the gate for the sheep.” What does this image imply to you? Acts 2:14a, 36-41 - At the end of Peter’s Pentecost speech, we hear “three thousand persons” were baptized. What do you think the people found so compelling in Peter’s words? 1 Peter 2:20b-25 - How does Peter connect our suffering to the suffering of Christ?
