THIRD SUNDAY IN EASTER

THIRD SUNDAY IN EASTER
Fortitude“When one is convinced that his cause is just, he will fear noth-ing”. St. John Bosco
Fortitude is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. A week back, we all at Easter Vigil Mass, renewed our baptismal vows – believ-ing in our Lord Jesus Christ and rejecting Satan and his ways. Thus, we are called to live according to the commandments of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Is it possible to follow God’s command-ments in this modern and sophisticated world? Yes, it is pos-sible but not easy. We need a lot of courage. The flesh, Satan and the world are obstacles to lead our lives according to our call. In other words, we are carried away by our internal and external forces against the will of God knowingly or unknow-ingly. Both internal and external Struggle is going on within us due to our limitations and weakness. Here, it is better to think of St. Paul’s words: “I do not do what I want, but I do what I hate.” (Roms.7:15)
In this painful situation, fortitude helps us live our lives faith-fully according to God’s commandments. The gift of fortitude helps us to be strong in a supernatural way to do God’s will in spite of our own limitations and weakness. By the gift of forti-tude, we are able to overcome our fears and take strong deci-sion to proceed further to accomplish God’s will. Most of the time we have to battle against evil forces like Long term illness, financial crisis, breakage in relationship, continuous failures in our efforts, to persevere in our faith. Such moments we need a lot of perseverance and patience. The gift of fortitude enables us to develop the virtues of perseverance and patience. By the gift of fortitude, we are able to go to the extent of sacrificing our own lives to do divine will. In the bible and Church, there are good many personalities who are the best example of the gift of fortitude: The first martyr of the Church, St. Stephen (Acts.7): He was ready to sacrifice his life and forgave the per-sons who killed him for the sake of Christ.
St. Maximilian Kolbe, priest, offered his life to save one of his fellow prisoners in the concentration camp. What about us? To be firm in our faith, we have to cultivate the gift of fortitude.
Prayer: Loving Jesus, I thank You for all the blessings show-ered on me. I feel sorry and ask Your forgiveness for the moments of failures in my Christian life. I thank You for pro-viding me various witnesses to cultivate the gift of fortitude to safeguard my faith. I ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Why did Jesus ask Peter “Do you love me?” three times?
Question: “Why did Jesus ask Peter ‘Do you love me?’ three times?”
Answer: Jesus asked Peter three times,“Do you love me?” as recorded in John 21:15–17. This occurred when Jesus was having breakfast with His disciples soon after His resurrection. Jesus used this opportunity to encourage and exhort Peter about his upcoming responsibilities and even to prophesy the manner in which Peter will die. By asking Pe-ter, “Do you love me?” three times, Jesus was emphasizing the importance of Peter’s love and unswerving obedience to his Lord as necessary for his future ministry.Jesus begins by questioning Peter about His love for Him, and each time Peter answers in the affirmative, Jesus fol-lows up with the command for Peter to feed His sheep. His meaning is that, if Peter truly loves his Master, he is to shep-herd and care for those who belong to Christ. His words reveal Peter’s role as the leader of the new Church, the Body of Christ there in Jerusalem that will be responsible for spreading the gospel after Jesus’ ascension into heaven. It is possible that by His repeated question Jesus is subtly reminding Peter of his three denials. There’s no doubt those denials and how he felt when Jesus turned to look at him at that moment were seared deeply into Peter’s mind (Luke 22:54–62). It wasn’t lost on Peter that Jesus repeated His question to him three times, just as Peter previously denied Him three times. There is also an interesting contrast when you look at the Greek words for “love” used in John 21:15–17. When Jesus asked Peter, “Do you love me?” in John 21:15–16, He used the Greek word agape, which refers to unconditional love. Both times, Peter responded with “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you,” using the Greek word phileo, which refers more to a brotherly/friendship type of love. It seems that Jesus is trying to get Peter to understand that he must love Jesus unconditionally in order to be the leader God is calling him to be. The third time Jesus asks, “Do you love me?” in John 21:17, He uses the word phileo, and Peter again responds with “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you,” again using phileo. The point in the different Greek words for “love” seems to be that Jesus was stretching Peter to move him from phileo love to agape love.Whatever the reason for the three-fold “do you love me?” question, Jesus was impressing on Peter how important his new role of tending the flock of Christ’s followers would be. When someone repeats instructions to us over and over, we quickly understand that it’s extremely important for us to heed them. Jesus wanted to make sure Peter understood this vital charge He was tasking him with and the ultimate reason for it, to follow Him and glorify God (John 21:19).

Confirmation News
“Acceptance makes an incredible fertile soil for the seeds to change” – Steve Maraboli
Our identity defines who we are and is often linked to what we do, what we like, where we are from, or how we see ourselves. For example, some people introduce themselves for the first time. “Good morning. My name is Dr. Bob. I’m a pediatrician.” “Hi, I’m Alex. I’m from Revere.” “Hello everyone. My name is Mike and I’m an alcoholic.” “Hello, I’m Janet and I have three children.” As the above indicates, people identify themselves differ-ently but St. Paul in his letter to Galatians identifies him-self differently: “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” (Galatians 2:20). St. Paul who was a torturer, arrogant, prideful after encountered and accepted by Christ became a different person. In “the Fertile Soil” (Christ) the seed (Saul) got an incredible change and became a faithful follower and proclaimer of Christ. He found joy in identifying himself with Christ. As Christ then encountered and accepted St. Paul is also encountering and accepting us through the Sacraments but many times, we turn a blind eye and move on missing “the incredible change” but I believe that the kind of change and identification in us like St. Paul will surely make a way for the dawn of the kingdom of God. Come on! Let us work on it!
May 5, 2019 is the “Third Sunday of Easter”. On this Sunday at 12 Noon Mass our second-year Confirmation candidates will be having their “Acceptance Rite”. In the Rite of Acceptance, a change of identity takes place: those previously known as inquirers become catechumens. They are officially welcomed by the Church as disciples, members (albeit not yet full members) of the household of faith. They are literally marked with the cross of Christ as God’s own. They do their promises to be more faith-ful to Christ. It is a beautiful event. All the second - year Confirmation candidates along with parents and sponsors are requested to be at the church half an hour before the Mass (11:30 AM) and be seated in the reserved front seats. Though the first-year Confirmation candidates have no classes, they are encouraged to attend the 12 Noon Mass and pray for those who are going to be confirmed this year.
