SUNDAY THOUGHT
The message of Easter is simply this: If Jesus has risen
from the dead, then death has been defeated and it now
has no more power over any one of us. Easter is the
greatest promise that can ever be made. It is a promise
of eternal and everlasting life after our physical death. It
is also a promise of being saved from all the “little
deaths” that we have gone through and still have to
suffer in the coming days. It is a promise that life is
always stronger than death, and that nothing, no matter
what it is, can prevent us from being fully alive in this
world, even when circumstances seem to say that there
is nothing left living for. But this promise demands that
we must claim this Easter life for ourselves. We should
not be content with anything less than the new life that
comes from Jesus Christ, Himself. Jesus is the one who
saves us. His resurrection is a promise that we also shall
rise, not only after death, but also in this life. Do we
feel trapped by our own behavior? Have we tried to
change something about ourselves that we know hurts
other people, but we have not been able to do so? Are
we imprisoned by the flames of anger, or our passions?
Do we want out of our present circumstances that
threatens to kill any life left in us? If that is the case we
must throw our arms wide open and welcome the Risen
Lord into our lives. In Christ Jesus all things are
possible with his help. Alleluia!

EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD APRIL 16, 2017
CELEBRATING THE SAINTS
Saint Matthias of Miyako, Layman and Martyr (+ 1597)
Saint Francis Xavier and two of his Jesuit brethren
entered Japan on the Feast of the Assumption, August
15, 1549. Their preaching efforts met with almost
immediate success; the Japanese threw their hearts
open to the Gospel. When Francis made ready to leave
two years later, he had seen more than 1,999 men,
women, and children embrace the Faith. “The delight
of my heart,” he declared them.
The first spasm of persecution against the
growing Japanese Church came only seven years later.
Yet the harassment only seemed to energize the
converts. The priest went underground but continued
to preach and baptize, and by 1587, approximately
200,000 Japanese were Christian. Ten years after that,
the warlord, Hideyoshi, worked into a rage by the
imagined threat of Spanish invasion, ordered the first
bloody purges. Christians in Miyako and Osaka were
targeted, and twenty-six were chosen for execution …
six Spanish Franciscans and twenty Japanese, among
whom were three native-born Jesuits.
When the soldiers arrived to collect the
Christians, one of the men on the list could not be
found, Matthias, the Franciscans’ cook. A different
Matthias came forward and offered to take the missing
man’s place. He joined the twenty-five others in their
forced walk to the Nagasaki coast, where all were
crucified on a hill by the sea. Saint Matthias of
Miyako’s feast is February 6

A SPECIAL COLLECTION
The Bishops of the United States have approved a
special one-time second collection to take place in
parishes across the nation to support the mosaic
ornamentation of the Trinity Dome, the crowning
jewel of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the
Immaculate Conception in Washington D. C. The
National Shrine has been a century in the making
since the laying of its foundation stone in 1920. The
hope is to complete the Trinity Dome in preparation
for the 100
th
Anniversary of the laying of the
foundation stone of the National Shrine by 2020.
Your participation in this special collection is your
opportunity to contribute to the legacy begun by our
ancestors in faith who wished to entrust themselves
and their families to the protection of the Mother of
God.
This special collection will be taken up here
at St. Anthony’s on the weekend of April 29-30,
2017. All checks should be made payable to St.
Anthony of Padua Parish with the memo marked
Trinity Dome at the Basilica.

ENCOUNTER THE RISEN CHRIST
We prayed, fasted and gave alms—and now we celebrate
Easter joy! Our Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl ends
as we encounter our risen Lord. We reflect on our brothers
and sisters whom we have walked with in India, Zambia,
El Salvador, Mexico, Ethiopia and Hawaii. And we
commit to bring Easter joy to each person we meet in our
daily lives. Thank you for your sacrifices and for returning
your CRS Rice Bowls.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY
“Let us not fall into the sin of trying to replace the
Creator. We are creatures, and not omnipotent.
Creation is prior to us and must be received as a gift. At
the same time, we are called to protect our humanity,
and this means, in the first place, accepting it and
respecting it as it was created.” — Pope Francis, The
Joy of Love, 56.

THERE’S HOPE
Many in our region are struggling with the pain and
devastation caused by the heroin epidemic. As you’ve
read in the paper and on the internet, and seen on the
news, it’s a painful struggle that is gripping our region
and our state. There is always hope and there are
pathways to find help. If your, or someone you know,
is struggling with addition or needs help in
supporting a family member, go to:
www.GreaterthanHeroin.com. It’s a website
prepared by civic and faith leaders across our region
to help show the way to hope and recovery.

HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU
KNOW…
Did you know that Easter is the
greatest solemnity in the Church.
All of Heaven and Earth rejoices
because Jesus saved us and
opened the way to the Father.
HE IS RISEN. HE IS RISEN, INDEED!
WEEKLY WORK OF MERCY
Let the hope, joy, and new life in the Resurrection
take hold in your life. By his wounds, you are healed.
Forgive those who have hurt you, especially family
members.
CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER
“We do not pretend that life is all beauty. We are
aware of darkness and sin, of poverty and pain. But
we know Jesus has conquered sin and passed through
his own pain to the glory of the Resurrection. And we
live in the light of his Paschal Mystery - the mystery
of his Death and Resurrection. ‘We are an Easter
People and Alleluia is our song!’” — St. John Paul II,
from his Angelus address on Sunday, 30 November
1986.
WEEKLY MASS REMINDER
At the beginning of Mass, you were
sprinkled with fresh holy water. It is a
reminder that you are a member of the
baptized. Ask God to renew the grace of
your baptism as you follow Jesus with your
whole heart.
