ST. ANTHONY of PADUA Catholic Church and School

August 11, 2019 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Our parish is a culturally inclusive Catholic community brought together by our common faith in Jesus Christ. Our Mission is to evangelize, educate, serve,

and love one another as God loves us.”

Throughout human history, stories abound of people who be-lieved in a greater cause, a cause larger than themselves, a belief in something so strong they were willing to sacrifice for it. One of these stories, is the story of a man named Abraham. Abraham is the embodi-ment of faith. Abraham left his home and willingly lived a simple life to achieve God’s will. His faith was so strong that he himself was prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac, his own flesh and blood. “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; he went out, not knowing where he was to go.” “By faith he sojourned in the promised land as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents….” “By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up his son Isaac [as a sacrifice]...He reasoned that God was able to raise even from the dead, and he received Isaac back as a symbol.” For Abraham, his son Isaac became a sign of hope. But, what exactly is faith? In today’s second reading from the Let-ter to the Hebrews, we are told that “Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 Abraham was a strong individual who believed in a much bigger cause, bigger than himself. He was a man of faith. He believed in God. He believed that God would provide for him and for his descendants. His faith “is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.” The gospel of Luke reminds us that “...Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” Luke 13: 48 Each of us is entrusted with time, talent, and treasure. Each of us is a steward of God’s gifts. As stewards of God’s gifts, when we review how we spend our time, how much of our time is devoted to faith-building activities? As we think about our talents, where do we spend most of our talents? When we review our personal finances, how much are we willing to spend on faith-formation or faith-building activities? Today, let us ask ourselves, “Where are we in our faith?”

Last Week’s Question: Who is referred to in Catholic teaching as, “Theotokos?”

Ask...The Stewards Today’s gospel instructs that those servants whom the master finds vigilant upon his arrival and doing His will are re-warded handsomely. Similarly, in the workplace, you are known more for what you do and what you achieve. Your reputation is often built either around productivity or the lack of it. Years of productivity in an industry can allow you to own the number one position. Paul prayed that “you would live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of the Kingdom of God.” Stewardship Challenge: Do your actions line up with the position God desires for your life? Are you modeling the fruits of the Holy Spirit in all aspects of your life?

Answer: The title of “God-Bearer” (“theotokos”) was given to Our Blessed Mother by the Council of Ephesus in the 5th Century as an answer to those who argued that Mary’s part in God’s Salvation Plan should be restricted to her role as the mother of Christ's hu-manity only and not His divine nature. The Council decreed that she was the Mother of Jesus, true Man and true God. Next Week’s Question: What Medal of Honor recipient from the Vietnam Conflict was known by the nickname “The Grunt Padre”?

Good bye & Aloha to our coconut trees!

We are sad to say good-bye to the coconut trees that had to be cut down this past weekend. But, after consulting with tree experts, the deci-sion was made to cut them down as they were diseased and we risked the possibility they would fall onto the

church and/or hurt someone. For the safety of everyone, we bid farewell to our beloved coconut trees and had them removed. Aloha!

To have your child baptized, call the Parish Office, 266-2222, to begin this joyous process. Prior to baptizing your child, parents and godparents are re-quired to attend a Baptism class held on the first Sunday. The next Baptism

class will take place on Sunday, Sep 1st, at 10am, in the Parish Office. Baptisms take place on the third Sunday at the 8:30am Mass.

Serran Prayer for Vocations

O God, Who wills not the death of a sinner—rather that

he be converted and live—grant we beseech you—through the intercession of the blessed Mary, ever

Virgin—St. Joseph, her spouse– St. Junipero Serra—and all the saints—an increase of laborers for Your Church—fellow laborers with Christ to spend and consume them-selves for souls—through the same Jesus Christ—Your Son Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the

Holy Spirit—God forever and ever. Amen.

In July, the Stewardship Committee challenged all parishioners to cut out the above two prayers and pray them daily so that together we pray for an increase in the number of Catholics who join the priesthood and the reli-gious. Please accept the challenge to cut out the above prayers, carry them in your I-phones, wallets or purses, and pray them daily. The church needs good people to join the priesthood and the religious.

Contact Mark Pillori, Vice President of Membership at 808-721-1810 to find out how to get involved with the Serra Club of Honolulu.

Prayer for the Perserverance of Vocations

O God, You have constituted your only-begotten son supreme and eternal priest for the glory of

your majesty and the salvation of mankind: grant that those whom He has chosen ministers and dis-pensers of His mysteries may be found faithful in

fulfilling the ministry they have received.

Presented by Serra International in furtherance of its vocations objectives.
