ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH LORAIN, OH
Father Georges was an oblate missionary priest assigned to the missions of the Canadian North-
west. Perhaps the fact that early winters near the
Arctic guarantee a “White Christmas”, his native
congregation thoroughly enjoyed celebrating the
rites of that great festival. One Advent, the pastor
and his flock had made the usual preparations for the
nativity. The little church was decorated with ever-
greens, the crib was set up, and all was ready for the
Midnight Mass. Unfortunately, on December 24th, the weather
turned bad. A blinding blizzard whipped down from
the Arctic Ocean and the drifts were soon so deep
that the whole mission parish was snow-
bound. Obviously, the Christmas liturgies could not
take place. In fact, the missionary himself could not
even get out and reach the church next door to cele-
brate Mass privately. Cabined, cribbed and confined, Fr. Georges was
disconsolate. What a way to pass Christmas! He
loved the Mass, and had always made a practice of
offering it daily except when seriously impeded. He
had never before been prevented from saying Mass
on Christmas. Alone in the gloom, he had only the
gloomiest of thoughts. But as he ruminated in self-
pity, he suddenly recalled what a retreat master had
once told him: “Remember, the chief lesson of
Christmas: do the will of God!” Yes, thought Georges, reflecting on the words of
the psalmist: “To do your will, O my God, is my de-
light, and your law is within my heart” (Ps.
409). That thought put a new complexion on his
situation. “God wants it this way,” he con-
cluded. And strange as it seems, he later looked
back upon this snowbound Christmas as one of the
sweetest and best in his life. Not all of us will have a “Merry Christmas” this
year in the usual sense. Sickness, disability, unem-
ployment, family troubles, loneliness – these may
dull the edge of our own holiday joy. Christmas tri-
als can actually be beneficial in bringing us closer
still to the chill poverty of the stable where Christ
was born. Then we can pray with deep personal
feeling the prayer of Midnight Mass: “May we share
His life completely by living as He has taught!”
~Rev. Edward J Smith

ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH LORAIN, OH
ADORATION CHAPEL
Merry Christmas, O Come Let Us Adore
Him, Our Eucharistic Savior. “In this
midnight Mass . . . I shall see a crib on the
altar, and the sweet Babe with His two
eyes filling with tears more precious than pearls, I
will offer Him to God, His Father with His Mother’s
approval and will ask Him for you that He may ever
be heart of your heart and the sole beloved of your
soul.” ~St. Francis de Sales
“When we worship You in the form of bread . . . We
always see You as an adult. But every year at
Christmas, you reveal Yourself to us as a child born
in a crib. We stand in silent amazement . . . In silent
adoration we stand before the mystery, like Mary
when the shepherd came and told her what they had
seen and heard: ‘She kept all these things pondering
them in her heart.’ ~Chiara Lubich, foundress of
the Focolare Movement
PRO LIFE THOUGHT OF THE WEEK
Merry Christmas! Today our Savior, Christ the Lord
is born! The Word, Jesus Christ, was with God from
the beginning and brought life to the world. What an
awesome thought! Jesus being born in time reminds
all of us that our birth is not an accident. God
uniquely created each one of us and gave us life out
of love. He designed us with purpose and blessed
each one of us with gifts and talents. Jesus, Em-
manuel and Son of God, shows us who we are and
who we are meant to become!

EXODUS: CALLED TO FREEDOM BIBLE STUDY This ten-part Bible Study looks through the lens of Christ and the Church to show that, more than just seeking to free his people physically from the domina-tion of Pharaoh, God desired to free his people from the far more dangerous grip of sin. Because of this, the Exodus story is not just Israel’s story, but our story as well; it reveals to us who God is and what he calls us to be. Exodus: Called to Freedom will meet 1/17, 1/24, 1/31, 2/7, 2/21, 2/28, 3/7, 3/14, 3/21 &
3/28 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Elyria. Cost is $25 per person and includes workbook, materials & supplies. Deadline to register is Friday, January 12th. For more info, contact Jackie, 440-324-6615 Ext.4 or [email protected].
