ST. ANTHONY of PADUA Church and School
MISSION STATEMENT
“Our parish is a culturally inclusive community
brought together by our common faith in Jesus Christ.
Our mission is to evangelize, educate and serve, and to love one another as God loves us.”
Today we continue to read from Mark’s Gospel, learning more about the ministry of Jesus. Jesus cured Simon’s mother-in-law, and she immediately began to serve Jesus and his disciples. Jesus also cured many others who were brought to him, healing their illnesses and driving out demons. As we will see throughout Mark’s Gospel, Jesus did not permit the demons to speak because they knew his identity and would have re-vealed it to those who were present.
On the morning after this busy day, Jesus retreated in prayer, but was pursued by Si-mon and others who brought news that many people were looking for him. At this point in Mark’s Gospel, we begin to see a distinct role for the inner circle of Jesus’ disci-ples—they act as intermediaries between Jesus and the people. Jesus reports to his dis-ciples that they need to leave Capernaum to preach in other places.
Today’s Gospel completes a picture of Jesus’ ministry: preaching, curing the sick, driving out demons, and then moving on to continue this work in another place. Mark's Gospel tells us that Jesus did this throughout Galilee.
Jesus’ compassion and healing of the sick is a sign of the Kingdom of God. The Church continues to extend Christ’s healing presence to others in its ministry to the sick. In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, the Church prays for spiritual and physical heal-ing, forgiveness of sins, and comfort for those who are suffering from illness.
In today’s Gospel we also notice the importance of prayer in Jesus’ daily life. Jesus rose early in the morning, removed himself from the crowds, and went to a deserted place to pray. When the disciples found him, he told them that it was time to move on. We believe that in his prayers Jesus found guidance and direction from God. We also bring our decision-making to God in prayer, asking for his guidance and direction in our lives.

Last Week’s Question: In the 1840s, the King-
dom of Hawaii gave the newly established Catho-lic Mission of Honolulu a plot of land located at 839-A South King Street. For what purpose was that land used?
Answer: The land was used for the original
Honolulu Catholic Cemetery, which has been the final resting place for many Roman Catholics from Honolulu before 1930, including some of the earliest Sacred Heart missionaries as well as several of the territorial Bishops of the Diocese. Although now closed for burials, the cemetery is open to the public from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily.
This Week’s Question: What are the two names given to the
day before Ash Wednesday and what does each mean?
Ask...The Stewards! As of January 28th, parishioners contributed $85,702 towards the Five Year Repair and Maintenance Plan. It was reported that the 29 ceiling fans and the dimmer panel board were on the urgent repair or replace list. Another urgent repair is the roof of the Par-ish Hall. It's in bad condition and there is a leak in the kitchen. The total estimated cost to repair the Parish Hall roof is $124,000.
We urgently need everyone's participation in this effort to maintain OUR PARISH BUILDINGS. Please consider making a contribution towards this effort.

Liturgical Ministry Corner: Hospital and Homebound Ministry If you attend the 8:30 am Mass regularly, you probably notice that the Priest calls up all Homebound Ministers at the end of Mass for a special blessing. In much the same way, the priest calls up the Hospital Ministers after the 6:30 am Mass. We are all called to pray with him and ask the Lord to guide and protect them on their mission to share Christ’s Body with those members of our Parish who are unable to share in the Mass that week. The Hospital and Homebound Ministry is incredibly important in keeping our parishioners connected to our church community through personal visits and the reception of the Holy Eucharist. For those
parishioners who are in hospitals, nursing homes, or homebound, this visit is something they look forward to each week. Being able to share the Body of Christ and Church community with those who cannot come on their own is both a blessing and a privilege for the Minister as well. If you are interested in joining this important ministry, please con-tact Fran Hackbarth at (808)261-2165 or [email protected]. Your support and continued prayers for this ministry are very much appreciated!

This weekend, a very important event is taking place in the life of the Church: the Super Bowl. I know what you are thinking – THAT can’t actually be an important event – it has nothing to do with Jesus or the Church. Right?!
Ah, I beg to differ. At least 100 million people will be watching the Super Bowl this weekend, including almost 50% of folks residing in the United States.
This is why the Super Bowl matters: our vocation, as laity, is to be yeast or “leaven” in the world, living in the ordinary circum-stances of family and social life and bringing God’s fullness - God’s faith, hope and love - into all things (adapted from Lumen Gentium, paragraph No. 31).
Pope Francis said it well at Super Bowl LI last year, “Great sporting events like today’s Super Bowl are highly symbolic, showing that it is possible to build a culture of encounter and a world of peace. May this year’s Super Bowl be a sign of peace, friend-ship and solidarity for the world,” (Pope Francis, Feb. 5, 2017)
May Super Bowl LII bring us closer to one another and help us be leaven in the world, even if the Patriots win again. ‘Er, I mean regardless of who wins. :-)
