Pope Francis had a birthday party with a group of children being treated by the Pediatric Dispensary of Santa Martain at the Vatican. Last year, Pope Francis celebrated his 80th birthday with a group of homeless people at a breakfast at his Santa Marta residence.

At 10.30 this morning, in the Paul VI Hall, the Holy Father Francis received in audience with the children assisted by the “Santa Marta” Paediatric Dispensary. The following is the greeting the Pope addressed to the volunteers, parents and all the children present:

Greeting of the Holy Father

Good morning!

The joy of children ... The joy of children is a treasure. Joyful children ... And we must do everything to keep them joy-ful, because joy is like good earth. A joyful soul is like a good earth that makes life grow well, with good fruit. And this is why we celebrate: we always look for the proximity of Christmas to gather together and to hold this party for them. Listen carefully. First: protect the joy of children. Do not sadden children. When children see that there are problems at home, that the parents quarrel, they suffer. Do not make children sad. They must always grow with joy. Are you joyful? [“Yes!”]. I don’t believe it: yes or no? [“Yes!”]. Very good. This is joy.

The second thing, for children to grow well: let them speak with their grandparents. The two extremes of life. Because grandparents have memory, they have roots, and it will be grandparents who give roots to children. Please, let there not be rootless children, without the memory of the people, without the memory of the faith, without the memory of the many beautiful things that make up history, without memory of values. And who will help children to do this? Grandpar-ents. May they speak with their grandparents, with the elderly. Do you speak with your grandparents? [“Yes!”]. Are you sure? [“Yes!”]. To ask for a sweet? [“No!”]. No? Tell me… At times, very often, we are left without grandparents, aren’t we? But there are other elderly people who can be our grandparents. Always speak with the elderly. I will ask you a question, answer carefully: are grandparents and the elderly boring? [“No… Yes”] You… [“They give us lots of gifts”]. He’s interested: they give us lots of gifts! They are not boring, they are good. Tell me… [“They love us very much”.] They love us very much. May children learn to speak with the elderly, to speak to their grandparents. And the third piece of advice I give you: teach them to speak with God. Let them learn to pray, to say what they feel in their hearts.

Joy, speaking with grandparents, with the elderly, and talking to God. All right? Do we all agree? You too, all right? I wish you a nice day, and a good party. And eat the four metres of pizza: eat well, it will do you good, it will make you grow! And keep going! Thank you, thank you!

And now let us all pray to Our Lady to give us her blessing: Hail, Mary

and speaks about the family

Children and Family Mass Ministry

New year blessings from the priest, Msgr. Joe, pastor, Fr. Vian, Fr. Raj

I trust you all had a good Christmas Dear God, thank you that it is the beginning of a new year. thank you for giving us a whole new year in which to worship you. Thank you that you promise to be with us and guide us every day. Please help us to try and please you in everything we do and give us your strength to live for you in the New Year to come. This is the begin-ning of an exciting new adventure. In Jesus’ name – Amen!

Bless your children every day, with a sign of the cross on the baby’s forehead. This blessing has great power. The LORD bless you and keep you! The LORD let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you! The LORD look upon you kindly and ive you peace!

January birthday blessings is on January 7th at 9 am, family mass. Please bring your January children, the priests and the whole community of St. Anthony of Padua will pray and bless your children.

Gospel message this Sunday December 31, 2017, Abraham Lincoln said, "There is just one way to bring up a child in the way he should go, and that is to travel that way yourself." Don't send your children to school to learn to become something, be that "something" yourself. And when you doubt your ability to be a primal teacher for your family just remember that "an ounce of mother is worth a pound of clergy." Also recall the Indian echo of that Spanish proverb: "One guru is worth ten paid teachers. One father is worth a hundred gurus. And one mother is worth one hundred fathers."

December 31, 2017 The Holy Family “When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned ... to their own town of Nazareth.” Mary and Joseph were faithful Jews who followed the norms of their religion. Today’s Gospel describes the event we call “The Presentation.” Jesus’ parents, like every Jewish family, pre-sented their infant son to the Lord in a formal ceremony at the temple in Jerusalem. Having done what their religious rites re-quired (and having heard the prophetic words of Simeon and Anna), Mary and Joseph returned home. It was back in their native region of Galilee, amidst the daily routine of domestic life, that Jesus “grew and became strong, filled with wisdom.” As Christians, we too consecrate our children to the Lord when we have them baptized in the Church. Seeing our children receive this sacrament of initiation is always a moment of great joy and hope as we anticipate the life that lies ahead for them, both on earth and in eternity. But the baptism of a baby is only the beginning of this journey towards heaven. In truth, the little daily details, the simple living of family life in our own home paves the way for our children to reach their eternal home. And so it was with the Holy Family. Jesus’ childhood, his formation and development took place not primarily amidst the public drama of the temple, but in the quiet privacy of his home. How important this home was, where his parents raised him in their faith and helped him live in such a way that “the favor of God was upon him.” May we too, in our homes and our families, remember that although our mission may be lived out in very small moments, taken together they have an eternal significance.

Sacrificial Giving 2017

Did We Take a Step? Due to printers deadline, we are unable to include last weeks collection. This information will be in a future bulletin.

“Whatever you do,” says St. Paul to the Colossians, “...do it in the name of the Lord Jesus. Give thanks to God the Father through him.” And so it is that we offer our gifts in the

Eucharist “through Him, with Him and in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit…”

Please do not leave the church until Mass has ended.

Flowers placed on the Altar in front of the Blessed Mother are in Memory of the Anniversary of Doris L. Kelly

St. Anthony’s Peanut Butter & Jelly Gang Our next PBJ Gang will meet Saturday, January 27th in the lower church.

Groups of 8 or more must e-mail RSVP 2 weeks prior to meeting. Please arrive by 8:50am. We end by 10:30. Join the dozens of wonderful people who attend each month to help feed the hungry.

We do Not meet in December Financial Stewards:

In Memory of Bridget De Pasquale

We rely on financial donations to sustain our PBJ ministry.

Top 10 New Year’s resolutions…with a Christian twist! 1. Get in shape – try kneeling, then standing, then bowing, then genuflecting...before God. 2. Eat healthier – nothing is healthier to consume than the Eucharist. 3. Get out of debt – spiritual debt…go to church and receive treasures of the heart. 4. Stop smoking – stop fuming with anger, emotional pain or bitterness. Visit the altar of forgiveness. 5. Start budgeting – your time better, making more time for prayer. 6. Get a new job– or perhaps simply join a parish ministry and help God with His job. 7. Spend more time with family – your Holy family, by making church your 2nd home. 8. Save or make more money – store heavenly treasures by random acts of kindness. 9. Get your life organized – put Christ first...everything else falls into place. 10. Give more – time, talent or treasure…which ever you can afford.

A LESSON IN THE SPIRIT OF GIVING This is the season of giving. Many of us give presents to those we love and spend time with family and friends. But how many of us give of ourselves to the stranger, the poor, the neglected? A very special person comes to mind when I think of giving. Our former Parish Outreach coordinator, Bridget DePasquale was, for me, the picture of giving, com-passion and kindness. She exemplified both, Corporal works of mercy which concern the material needs of others and Spiritual works of mercy which concern the spiritual needs of others. Her life was a lesson in giving for me and I am blessed to have worked with and spent time with her here in my church family.

YOUR TOUR AT A GLANCE:

Our prayer group has been well attended and active this week before Christmas. We celebrate the tradition of the Posada. Posada is the Spanish word for the inn. We celebrate the tradition of Mary and Joseph looking for a room at the inn. Each night we visited a different home. Not only are we all full of the Holy Spirit we are full of good food served af-ter the prayers are over. Merry Christmas to all. For anyone that would like to study the Spanish language we always welcome visitors to the 10:30 AM Sunday mass in the lower church.

Normally on Saturday evenings at 7:00 PM is the rosary group but this week we are celebrating it in various homes instead. For more information on our activities contact Don Huber at 516-647-1612. Knowledge of the Spanish language is not neces-sary to enjoy the Holy Spirit that we all feel. You are welcome!

Become A Big Brother or Sister! In Just a Few Hours a Month, you can impact a child’s future. By sim-ply grabbing a slice of pizza, taking a trip to the library or to the park you can make a difference in the life of a child. What is a Big? A ‘Big’ is a volunteer mentor who is matched in a one-to-one relationship with a child (‘Little’) in our program. A mentor is a friend, a supporter, a positive and consistent addition to the life of a Little. A Big Brother or Big Sister is not a replacement parent, a babysitter or a therapist. Children need someone to help share a different perspective on life and help them realize their endless potential. Take the first step! Visit: www.bbbsli.org/become-a-big/ or call 516-731-7880 X212
