Bishop's Appeal: This Easter Season is a wonderful time to celebrate our faith and the Resurrection of our Lord. For those newly initiated into the Catholic Church, this spring also marks a milestone on their faith journey. With help from parish-directed programs called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), candidates received the resources, support, and knowledge they needed to take the next step in their journey of faith. The RCIA program begins at the diocesan level, and parishes receive assistance in helping people come into full communion with the Catholic Church. With a gift to the Bishop’s Appeal, you help parishes enhance their RCIA programs and welcome future, newly formed Catholics. To make a gift to the Bishop’s Appeal contact your parish, visit the Bishop’s Appeal website at www.catholicfoundationgb.org/give, or call Debbie toll-free at 877-500-3580, ext. 8184.

Fr. Matt’s Corner:... and make our dwelling with him

Happy Easter to all of my favorite people! Today is holy

to the Lord, our God. In the midst of all that has befallen

our community over the past couple of weeks, we have

been hearing great Good News from our Lord: “Behold,

God’s dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell

with them and they will be His people and God himself

will always be with them as their God. He will wipe

every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more

death or mourning, wailing or pain, for the old order has

passed away.” And today: “Whoever loves Me will keep

My Word, and my Father will love him, and We will

come to him and make Our dwelling with him.

God is with us. As that old hymn resounds: “No storm

can shake my inmost calm, while to that Rock I’m

clinging. Since Love is Lord of heaven and earth, how

can I keep from singing?” We are now in this last

portion of the Easter season, and Mother Church is

preparing us for two major events in the history of the

universe: The Ascension of our Lord back into heaven –

after which we will no longer see Him as He was during

His earthly life (until that day when we meet Him face-

to-face) – and the Descent of the Holy Spirit at

Pentecost.

These will be the next two Sundays on our calendar.

Next Sunday is Ascension Thursday (don’t even try to

figure that one out – I’ve already tried), and the

following Sunday is Pentecost. Seen in light of one

another, these two great feasts of the Church year –

which come so close together – teach us (among other

things) that God is with us even when He’s not – or

rather, when it seems that He’s not.

That’s what the Church is all about. In God’s great plan,

He wants us to know this – not only in our minds (which

is certainly important), but also in our guts (our hearts).

The Sacraments, the Church’s teaching, the Bible, the

Church’s hierarchical structure, the unity that we (are

meant to) have in the Church’s Faith, the Love that we

(are commanded to) share as Jesus’ disciples – all these

things and more have been ordained by the Father and

instituted by Jesus Christ to help us to share in the life of

the Holy Spirit. That is, to help us to know that God is

with us.

If God is with us, whom should we fear? Since the time

of the Apostles and the early Church fathers – who were

all persecuted and/or martyred for our Faith – God has

been with us in and through the Catholic Church. That

union between Jesus and His Bride (the Church – that

holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from

God) is so profound and deep that throughout history,

She has been able to say confidently such bold things as:

‘It is the decision of the Holy Spirit and of us…’

Whoohoo, what joy and peace to know that God Himself

speaks through the Church. What inmost calm we may

have to know that Jesus and His Father have come to

“make our dwelling with [us]”.

Peace to all of you, my friends, this Holy Day, and to all

who love the Lord in simplicity of heart,

Fr. Matt

Ask Father:

This week’s question: “What is a novena and how/when

is it done?”

Here’s another great question, and one that I’ve

heard other people ask from time to time – especially in

those times leading up to special feast days in the Church

year, so thank you for asking.

Simply stated, a novena is nine days of prayer.

The original novena was the one commanded by Jesus

Christ Himself between His Ascension and Pentecost

(look up Luke 46-53, and Acts 1-14). There were nine

days between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost

Sunday, and this marked the first novena when the

Apostles gathered with Mary in that upper room. The

Church still maintains the practice of doing a novena to

the Holy Spirit in the days leading up to Pentecost, and to

get an idea of how to pray it, you can simply check out

http://www.ewtn.com/devotionals/pentecost/seven.htm .

There are countless other novenas available –

some for specific feast days, and others that can be

prayed at any time (generally devotions to particular

saints). Most of these include a short prayer to be prayed

during all nine days, and then particular prayers,

intentions, and/or readings for each particular day of the

novena.

It sometimes happens that a person who decides

to pray a novena will realize during those nine days that

“O my gosh, I forgot to pray yesterday’s portion of the

novena!” When that happens, don’t fret, for all is not

lost. What’s important is that you’re praying it today,

and you can always review the previous day’s

intention/reflection as well.

In short, novenas are wonderful ways to remind

us of – and to prepare us for – special days in our life

with God as we spend nine days in prayer – waiting upon

God’s gifts.

Thanks for another great question, and if you

have more questions or a different way of looking at this,

please sign on to our website and post a response under

the “Ask Father” section in the “Forum” area. And keep

those questions coming! May God bless you this Easter

and always!
