Mission StatementSt. Anselm’s Abbey School seeks to promote the spiritual, personal, and intellectual development of young men with demonstrated academic achievement. Our school, serving grades six through twelve, with its roots in the values of the Christian Gospels and Catholic tradition, strives to create a community built on respect for truth, love of learning, regard for human dignity, and tolerance. We pursue this goal by leading our students through a challenging and balanced program of study in the arts, sciences, and theology that gives them a solid preparation for the demands of college. By living and promoting the Benedictine spirit, we strive within our school to create an atmosphere of peace, a sense of service to community, and a willingness within our students to work toward a balance in mind, body, and spirit.

2014-2015 Annual Report | 3

The Holy Spirit whom Christ sent from the Father, and the Creator Spirit who gives life to all things, are one and the same. Respect for creation, then, is a requirement of our faith: the “garden” in which we live is not entrusted to us to be exploited, but rather to be cultivated and tended with respect. The world needs the courage, hope, faith, and perseverance of Christ’s followers, as well as the fruits of the Holy Spirit: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” (Gal 5:22).

Pope Francis

The Annual Report is supposed to include the major events from July 1st of one year to June 30th of the next. The first significant event for the monks — in the quietude of summer — is the Feast of Saint Benedict on July 11th. Every year on this day, the monks unobtrusively celebrate their Patron Saint, who was born in 480, and whose Rule has proved to be so wise and balanced that it has served as the foundation of practically every at-tempt at Western religious communal living for over 1,500 years. It recogniz-es that people strive for perfection but often fall well short. The Rule aims to be ‘for beginners,’ and through it even the least perfect and least able can grow in spiritual stature.

Great saints like a Benedict or an Anselm were able to seek an ecstasy or transfiguration of the ordinary. This oc-curs when insight or revelation of an underlying pattern or understanding pierces the heart and reconfigures the mind, thereby redeeming our frequently chaotic or confused ex-periences. Although constant — human daily encounters keep arriving to overwhelm this pattern of tranquility and peace — great saints are able to begin again and renew their efforts. Somehow, they have a genius sufficient to meet these continual new challenges through prayer and work.

During the peacefulness of the summer, the next import-ant liturgical feasts are the Transfiguration, on August 6th, and the Assumption, on August 15th. In His Transfigura-tion, Jesus gazes back at us with a luminous look of love that makes us desire to live His transparent beauty. Silently from Tabor’s splendor, Christ, the Savior, begs: “Become what you behold.” The Church always reveres Mary for her part in the Incarnation, and her Assumption reminds us that we too have been called to the obedience of listening so that we can be transformed, like Mary, into a new cre-ation. Mary also stands for the Church, and shows us her part, and ours, in the work of redemption. Prayer, reflec-tion, and education change what we have been that we may be transformed and become what we were not.

For Saint Anselm, all knowledge leads to true faith, and faith brings one to God. And as Pope Francis proclaims, “Respect for creation, then, is a requirement of our faith,” — so that we can be free to understand and choose the good — “the ‘garden’ in which we live is not entrusted to us to be exploited, but rather to be cultivated and tended with respect.” Creating an academic and spiritual life de-pends on the ability to attend with care to the daily practic-es of maintaining and sacralizing the body, mind, earth, and every person on the earth. This communal interrelationship is best fulfilled by crafting an interior space for silence, re-flection, and prayer — these are the basic building blocks

of a Benedictine monastic school. My thought on education is quite simple: seek truth, embrace excellence, and let knowledge speak for itself.

By the time you receive this Annual Report, the summer of 2015 will have come to an end, the new academic year (our 74th) will have begun, and I hope that we can transcend all that was ac-complished last year and plunge whole-heartedly into what is now before us — a sacred canopy of spiritual and ac-ademic transfigurations. As I have said before, by inspiring young minds, we educate our students to become moral persons, who are physically, intellectu-ally, and spiritually prepared for life in

the 21st century. It is my hope that our readers will be able to share in the

strengths and great accomplishments of this small, Bene-dictine “school of the Lord’s service.” First, I want to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Bill Crittenberger, who com-pleted his third year as Headmaster. Since he took office in 2012 as the tenth Headmaster of St. Anselm’s, Bill has led the school with warmth, with enthusiasm, and with vision. We are blessed to have him at the Abbey School.

As you will read later in this Annual Report, our Form VI students had many acceptances into prestigious colleges and universities, and I am pleased to report that our mission of academic excellence remains pre-eminent, always chal-lenging, always supportive of each and every student.

Let me now review other major events of the 2014-2015 academic and fiscal year. In late August, with 50-some dedicated teachers, administrators, coaches, and staff, the school opened its doors to 255 young scholars. Our aca-demically motivated young men broke the summer silence of our hallowed halls with high-spirited eagerness. We are grateful that among all the possible school choices, St. An-selm’s Abbey School is their preferred destination.

The Parents Association held its annual Family Picnic on September 7th with ample food, games, and other de-lights for the huge crowd of teachers, parents, children, and guests. The Association presented the school with a $10,000 check to support the Devine Million Dollar Chal-lenge. Many thanks!

The 34th Fall Scholarship Gala took place on the eve-ning of October 25th. Again, I want to thank all the parents who worked so very hard to make the Gala a success, and I especially want to thank the co-chairs, Mrs. Kay Kalhorn and Mrs. Kimberly Walhout. Certainly, I want to express my sincere gratitude to all who participated in the Gala — raising $230,356 to help us meet the Devine Million Dol-lar Challenge for the Endowed Scholarship Fund. That evening, our honorees were Mrs. Patricia Caulfield and her

late husband, Donald, for their 50 years of support to Cath-olic education. Our other honoree was Ms. Tamara Brown, the school’s Secretary and Registrar, for her 25 years of steadfast service to St. Anselm’s. And may I now encourage you to mark your calendars for our 35th Gala, “The Beach Ball,” on Saturday, October 24, 2015.

The Alumni Office, under the direction of Lawrence Hamm, ’68, had a full schedule of well-attended events. The annual Career Day was held on September 15th, when distinguished alumni shared their knowledge and expertise with our Fifth and Sixth Form students. On October 29th, the very competitive Damian Crane, ’55, Memorial Pool Tournament & Happy Hour was held at the Rocket Bar in Northwest DC. The perennial singles champ, George Mattingly, ’56, continued his winning streak. Nesti Arene, ’99, was the alumni half of the winning doubles team. This was followed on November 29th by the traditional Thanks-giving Memorial Mass and Alumni-Varsity Basketball Game. Bravo to the Alumni Panthers for their victory!

Once again I was fortunate to visit alumni nationwide. In the summer of 2014, I held Alumni Gatherings in: Chica-go - Charles Callanan, ’69, Charles Falzon, ’96, Xan Vong-sathorn, ’05; Reno - Janice Bertozzi (mother of Jason White, ’97); San Francisco (Palo Alto) - Sean Brennan, ’73, David Burke, ’84, Matt Tierney, ’84, Tom Cunningham, ’86, Josh Goldberg, ’88, Patrick Kenny, ’91; Los Angeles - Bruce Lloyd ’65, Al Hansen, ’72, Matt Dickie, ’94; San Diego (Rancho Santa Fe) - Mike Fleming, ’58, Brian Devine, ’59, Pierre Mailloux, ’80, Duff Pickering, ’80, Kevin A’Hearn, ’86; Las Vegas - James and Lynn Casimir (parents of Jeff, ’99); and Honolulu - James Potemra,’82, Joe Resing, ’82 (all the way from Seattle), Robert Hatch, ’83. Each of these meetings was small with varying class years, but each gradu-ate expressed his deep gratitude for the education and “char-acter formation” he received at St. Anselm’s.

Then in late January 2015, I went to Boston for the Model United Nations Conference where I also met up with three younger alumni — Conor Hearn, ’13, Tom Zorc, ’09, and Christian Schorn, ’09. In the first week of February, Richard Stafford, ’53, generously hosted Head-master Bill Crittenberger, 15 alumni, and me at the River Club in New York City. Each alumnus had a personal and vibrant story of his own, filled with fond memories and an-ecdotes of their days at St. Anselm’s.

The Alumni Association held its sixth Annual All-Alum-ni Reunion on the weekend of April 25th. That Saturday morning, over a hundred runners competed in the St. An-selm’s Family 5K Run/Walk in Memory of Peter Samp, ’08. Afterwards, 150 students, alumni, parents, friends, and monks had a magnificent picnic lunch. That evening, 120 alumni and guests filled the Commons at a fantastic ban-quet during which David Missar, ’83, was the recipient of the Abbot Alban Boultwood, OSB, Award for his 25 years of tireless service to the Alumni Association and the school. Silver Medals were presented to alumni who grad-uated 25 years ago, and Gold Medals were bestowed upon Henry Asbill, John Seater, Paul Warring, Mark Oliver, and Christopher Werner commemorating their 50th anniversa-ry. Needless to say, I want to thank Tim May, ’83, Presi-dent of the Alumni Association, and all the members of the Alumni Board for the love they show for their alma mater and for their exemplary labora on its behalf.

On June 1st, the 22nd Annual St. Anselm’s Abbey School Golf Outing was held at the Glenn Dale Coun-try Club. At noon on a very warm day, 68 golfers were treated to a picnic lunch before tee-off. Around 5:00 p.m., a rapidly moving thunderstorm caused the more cautious golfers to return to the clubhouse. However, others played through the storm and finished all 18 holes. Joining the

usual suspects who attend each year was a vast group of new golfers including alumni, parents, and current students. Some of the more seasoned alumni participating were Fred Tansill, Jim Beirne, and Robert Branson from the Class of 1966, and Peter Szegedy-Maszak from the Class of 1968. Our younger players brought enthusiasm — James Mc-Feeters, ’14, and his brothers Quinn, Form V, and Ryan, Form II; Carlo Pizzano, Form II, along with his brother CJ, who graduated this year; from Form IV, Tyler Pirovic, George Anninos, Evan Schoomaker, and Ben Hicks; and Anthony Pairo, Form V. The winning foursome, our bas-ketball coach, Paul Grenaldo, his son, David, Eric Dick-man, ’91, and John MacArthur, went home triumphant.

After the post-tournament dinner, the Alumni Associa-tion announced a gift of $15,000 for the scholarship fund. We are most indebted to Patrick Caulfield and the Coakley Williams Construction Company for being our major spon-sor. And of course, I want to thank Patrick Attridge, ’74, for his 21 consecutive years of chairing this event.

The school hosted two events for Form VII Forever, our Past Parents social organization. The first gathering took place at the Christmas Concert on December 6th with a cocktail and cheese reception. The second event was a Mass and brunch on February 22nd. Fr. Michael Hall, OSB,’ 56, school chaplain, preached; these parents of alumni braved the snow and ice to join in our Lenten Liturgy. Afterwards, I forbade anyone to slip and fall on the treacherous ice as we made our way down to the Commons to partake of an ample hot breakfast with platters of cluttered delectables.

As President of the school, I would like to take this op-portunity to thank our Chair of the Board of Trustees, Mrs. Sylvia Mahaffey, for her tireless work. Likewise, I want to thank all the members of the Board of Trustees for their dedicated service to St. Anselm’s Abbey School. George Wright, ’62, whose terms expired in June, deserves special recognition for his labor of love.

I also want to thank Mrs. Jane Sherman, the President of the Parents Association, and all the parents who served so generously over this past year on a full calendar of vital and time-consuming projects and events.

Most importantly, I must speak about the Devine Fam-ily Challenge. With the help of many, many donors and benefactors, the school was able to raise $1 million by the end of December to meet the Devine Family Challenge. In February, Brian Devine, ’59, sent the school a million-plus dollars’ worth of stock. As a result, $2 million dollars were added to the Endowed Scholarship Fund, which is per-manently restricted to help need-based students. Again, I want to thank each and every one of you for choosing St. Anselm’s Abbey School as one of your top philanthropic priorities. Praise the Lord!

Finally, in the 2014-2015 fiscal year, Mrs. Kimber-ly Walhout of our Development Office told me that the school, in all of our fundraising efforts — Fall Scholarship Gala, Annual Fund, the Devine Challenge — “collected” $2,290,432.38! A list of donors and gifts can be found later in this Annual Report. Without your prayers and benefac-tions, this Benedictine Abbey and School in the Nation’s Capital could not survive. Know that the monks pray daily for you and your families.

Pax in Sapientia,

Fr. Peter Weigand, OSBPresident

Headmaster’s LetterDear Members of the St. Anselm’s Community:

Having concluded my third year as the headmaster of this remark-able school, I have learned a few things along the way, one of which is how much I have yet to learn. This, in and of itself, is a good reason to be excited about being here, for it is in the learning well that we may go on to teach, mentor, and respond to others well. Always we begin again.

The following are examples of why I and all of us who toil optimis-tically and joyfully in the vineyards of St. Anselm’s are excited about the start of any new school year: 1) ever-probing and engaging stu-dents; 2) accomplished and devoted colleagues; 3) supportive and ap-preciative parents, present and past; 4) ever-humble and ever-available alumni; 5) wise and circumspect Board members; and 6) gracious and even-handed monks — beacons of goodness and light who have made, and continue to make, this place a special and unparalleled learning community. Whether through your thoughts and prayers, time and talent, financial support, and every combination thereof, thank you, community members, for helping to keep this loving, nurturing, challenging, thriving, and happy place a school where talented boys are molded, as wax, into exemplary men.

Any young man who is the right fit for St. Anselm’s should, and would, want to be here — even if only for a year — because even in a year’s time an Abbey Boy’s journey toward character and self-awareness has begun. Here, he makes meaningful inroads into finding out more about himself and into wanting to make a difference in the world around him — you should hear the Form A parents rave about their son’s seismic transformation in nine short months!

This also goes for young men nearing the end of their high school career. For the past two years, we have admitted students new to the school for their senior year. This may in theory sound like a questionable di-rection to take, especially considering we are the antithesis of a cookie-cutter, “one size fits all” school, but in the case of both of these young men, they fit in immediately, contributed significantly to both academics and to extra-curricular activities, and made lifetime friends with a wide array of classmates, in addition to being well-liked and well-received by younger boys and the faculty alike.

Many excellent and highly reputable schools around town, rightly, may have said “no thanks, it’s simply not something that we do” to a family inquiring about the possibility of a senior-year matriculation, but in our case, taking into consideration the circumstances and exigencies behind said possibilities, we took a discerning look, and then took the plunge…which has made all the difference! One boy’s family had lived overseas for the previous 20 years and had been reassigned stateside recently for what would be his senior year; and the other, a boy whose previous school simply couldn’t offer the robust program of studies for which he was prepared and which he deserved during his senior year. Our “yes” in both cases was the right thing to do and, happily, both young men flourished as part of the community of learners and teachers at our schools.

Our view is that given the right circumstances and student “fit,” any time at the Abbey is better than no time at all. It is because our community looks individually at each situation — and because we believe that all of God’s children are poised to make a mark on their surroundings as they are finding themselves — that anything is possible.

The symbiosis of this juxtaposition of fit and ability to embrace a wide variety of young men in their uniqueness works, I believe, because of the countless things that are going on at St. Anselm’s, both typ-ical and the atypical. All this is grounded in the stability of a 1,500-year-old way of life, one in which the monastery’s inhabitants — men who have devoted themselves to this profound calling and its lifetime commitment to living, and dying, here — provide both a symbolic and a very real anchoring point for one and all: newcomer, short-timer, and those who are here for a lifetime.

Pax in Sapientia,

William T. Crittenberger Headmaster

Chair’s Report

It is a great pleasure to have this opportunity to report on the many successes of the St. Anselm’s Abbey School during this 2014-2015 school year. The school continues to fulfill its longstanding tradition of developing the minds, bodies, and spirits of its students.

Leadership and EnrollmentThroughout this past year, the school has continued to benefit from the excellent leadership of our president, Fr. Peter Weigand, OSB, and our headmaster, Bill Crittenberger, who has just completed his third year in that position. Under Bill’s strong leadership, enrollment has increased each year, putting the school on a firmer financial footing. I am pleased to be able to announce that for the next academic year, enrollment will be at least 260 students, which meets — earlier than expected — the enrollment goal established in the Board’s five-year strategic plan.

Academic ExcellenceAs always, the academic successes this past year were many, and St. Anselm’s continues to be well-known locally and nationally for high academic achievement. Our talented and dedicated faculty continues to create a stimulating learning environment that challenges our students and keeps them engaged. Students again excelled in national exams in a wide range of subjects, from modern and classical languages to science to history, while the It’s Academic team reached the semi-finals.

Board Membership and ActivitiesFor the first time in several years, the membership of the Board will remain almost entirely consistent, with only one trustee leaving the Board. The Board is grateful to Mr. George Wright, ’62, for his faithful and dedicated service and for the many insights he offered during his term of office. We are pleased to announce that Mr. Patrick Granfield, ’99, will be joining the Board this fall. Mr. Granfield is an accomplished speechwriter who has worked for John Kerry and Rahm Emmanuel and who is currently working at the Department of State as special advisor and speechwriter for General John R. Allen. This year, the Board has added two new committees. The Strategic Planning and Vision Committee will

Dear Members of the St. Anselm’s Community:

2014-2015 Board of Trustees

take the lead in working with the community at large in developing the school’s new five-year strategic plan. The Facilities Committee’s role encompasses not only evaluation and oversight of maintenance requirements, but also ongoing assessments of facilities in light of the school’s evolving needs.

FundraisingThe generosity of alumni, past and current parents, and other members of the St. Anselm’s community produced a $2 million addition to the St. Anselm’s Endowed Scholarship Fund thanks to: 1) the wider community meeting the challenge set by Mr. Brian Devine, ’59, and his family by raising $1 million for the school’s Endowed Scholarship Fund during 2014; and 2) Mr. Devine matching that amount by contributing stock valued at more than $1 million to the endowment. Above and beyond these more than $2 million of contributions directed specifically into the Endowed Scholarship Fund, the school also received sufficient contributions to this year’s Annual Fund to exceed the budgeted amount. These achievements, which significantly strengthen the school’s financial foundation, are all the more remarkable because the selective nature of the St. Anselm’s program means that its donor community is also relatively small.

* * * * *

A St. Anselm’s education is a lifelong gift, offering young men the opportunity not just for academic development but for moral and spiritual development as well. Thanks to the school’s strong leadership, increasing enrollment, excellent academics, active Board, and loyal and gener-ous donors, St. Anselm’s is able to continue to strive to make that gift available to all qualified applicants, regard-less of their financial situation.

Sincerely,

Sylvia MahaffeyChair of the Board of Trustees

Reflects all gifts received between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015.

Recently, a friend of mine whom I met in college told me, “I wish I had gone to St. Anselm’s. I know only three people who went there, but they are three of the most trustworthy people I have ever met. I have to think that was because of St. Anselm’s.”

In retrospect, there was a subject I was taught at St Anselm’s that you won’t find in any course syllabus. However, I now realize, it was taught in every class. It was called character. St. Anselm’s does a magnificent job of teaching it.

Now, I give to St. Anselm’s Abbey School so that the current generation of deserving young men can benefit from the same character-forming opportunity that I had.

The Devine Family Endowed Scholarship Challenge

Brian, ’59, and Silvija Devine visited the school in May 2015.

One of the most impressive feats of the fiscal year was the completion of the Devine Family’s $1 Million Matching Challenge Campaign. Thanks to the generosity of the school community, we met the challenge and received a matching do-nation from the Devine Family in excess of $1 million for our Endowed Scholarship Fund.

The scholarship endowment is a funding priority for St. Anselm’s because each year it helps us to meet our scholarship aid budget without ever touching the principle. We determine the amount withdrawn using a conservative spending rule of 4% of the three-year average balance. This year, with the Fund growing to nearly $8 million in value, we expect to withdraw $239,000 in scholarship aid, 40% more than what was available last year. Eventually, when the three-year average reaches the new balance, we anticipate being able to withdraw in excess of $320,000 each year! We are immensely grateful to all those who have helped to build this lasting asset for our school, making make it possible for qualified students to receive a St. Anselm’s education.

We gratefully acknowledge all those who contributed to our Endowed Scholarship Fund through the Devine Challenge, including donations from both the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 fiscal years.

“We, who are among the fortunate few to have the benefit of a St. Anselm’s education, owe much to those who came before us and established the school, rigorous liberal arts curriculum, and reputation that we enjoyed. That took money and it still takes money. As it is one of the few institutions that have remained reliably a source of pride for me since First Form, I gladly make this school a priority in my giving.”

F. Patrick Ostronic, ’73

A Message from the AbbotDear Friends of St. Anselm’s:

I am writing this message for our school’s Annual Report in late June, just a few days after having returned from the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in northern Spain, where I was part of a group of six persons con-nected in one way or another with our abbey and school. Although our actual walk was “only” the 180 miles between the cities of León and Santiago de Compostela, we had earlier stayed for a couple days in Burgos, about a hundred miles east of León, where Br. Ignacio had arranged for the two of us to pray at the grave of Fr. Thomas Verner Moore, OSB. As many of you know, Fr. Moore was the principal founder of our own monas-tery back in the early 1920s and later served as our community’s superior until he transferred to the Carthusian monastery of Miraflores on the outskirts of Burgos at the age of 70.

As I think back on my pilgrimage along the Camino, it seems appropriate to reflect not only on the many turnings in Fr. Moore’s earthly pilgrimage, which included years as a Paulist priest, then as a Benedictine, and finally as a Carthusian, but also on the fact that all of us are, in one way or another, on a pilgrimage to a heavenly homeland. St. Paul is very clear in teaching that we have on earth no final dwelling place, for our real citizenship is in heaven. Here at the abbey, we monks keep this truth in mind not only as we move through the various parts of our daily horarium inside the monastery, but also as we interact with persons outside the monastic community, whether these be students in our school, their parents, our many lay oblates, or persons who simply come to worship in our church and perhaps spend a few days among us in private retreat.

As always during the summer, there are a lot of comings and goings among our monks, some of whom trav-el on monastic business such as to a General Chapter meeting at Buckfast Abbey that Fr. Gabriel and I will be attending in late July, others on school business such as Fr. Peter’s regular visits with alumni in different parts of our country, and still others for recreation, but all will be back in time for our community retreat in mid-August, to be conducted this year by Fr. James Flint, OSB, of St. Procopius Abbey in Lisle, Illinois. Short-ly thereafter come the first faculty meetings of the new school year and then classes themselves. Our various publications will keep you abreast of all that is going on as the months pass by.

I want to conclude by expressing my deep thanks for the monetary gifts that many of you have made to the abbey over the past 12 months. We have gratefully listed your names in a special section of this Report and assure you of our regular prayers for all of our benefactors.

Sincerely yours,

James A. Wiseman, OSBAbbot

2014-2015 Annual Report | 33

Abbot James, Fr. Peter, Fr. Michael, Mr. Crittenberger, monks, faculty, staff, families, and students from the graduating Class of 2015:

I am very happy to be here with all of you today. This is, first and foremost, a day to celebrate the accomplish-ments of St. Anselm’s newest graduating class.

You graduates are fortunate indeed to have had the benefit of the St. Anselm’s Experience, which I believe is unique among schools in the Washington metropolitan area. At St. Anselm’s, you have benefit-ed from the school’s commitment to academic excel-lence. More than that, however, you have benefited from the school’s insistence on balancing this commit-ment to academic excellence with its commitment to teaching you to become moral persons who are both intellectually and spiritually prepared for life in the 21st century. The balanced and challenging curriculum at St. Anselm’s has provided each of you students with a thorough exposure to the major academic disciplines. In addition, the school — through the examples of-fered by the monks, the faculty and staff, and the ad-ministration — has offered you a moral compass for life by teaching you to appreciate and use the talents you have been given, not just for your own benefit but for the benefit of those around you. Also, St. Anselm’s has instilled in you that all-important concept of Benedicti-nism — the acknowledgment that “every day, we begin again” — so that you will continue not only to learn and grow in mind, body, and spirit but also to develop your gifts to their full capacity. You are indeed well-pre-pared for the future in all its aspects.

This also is a day for the graduates to take a moment to be thankful for the support they have received from family, friends, and the community here at St. Anselm’s Abbey School.

And so I want to focus — for a moment — on that word “community,” because I think it represents one of the very special qualities of St. Anselm’s. Of course, all schools talk about their school communities, but the St. Anselm’s community is different. I think that is because our community is built on something more substantial than the idea of community as simply those members of the administration, the faculty, the student body, and the parent group who happen to be involved in a school at one particular period of time. Instead, St. Anselm’s is built on the Benedictine traditions of community and hospitality, in which each individual is respected for who he or she is, in which there is an in-terest in and openness to each person’s experiences and opinions, and in which care and attention are given to the needs of others. As a result, your relationship with

St. Anselm’s and the St. Anselm’s community is not ending today, but instead will continue long after today is over, not only for you members of the Class of 2015 but also for you, their parents.

At least, that certainly has been my experience. Seven years ago, my son — and my husband and I, and other family members — were sitting where you are now, on stage or in the audience, at the commencement for the Class of 2008. Seven years ago — that’s a long time, and in fact, for you graduates, more than a third of your lives so far. Yet, at the school’s annual Scholar-ship Gala this year, parents of members of the Class of 2008 and Class of 2008 alumni filled two entire tables. Not only that, but we parents then made sure to place the winning bid on a different dinner large enough to accommodate us all — just so that we had another reason to get together and another way to support St. Anselm’s, the school that has given so much to us and to our sons. In fact, each year, we and many of our sons not only happily make the time to come back to the school for many and varied events, but also to get together outside of those events, and all because we still belong to that amazing and wonderful community that is St. Anselm’s Abbey School. It is, for so many of us past parents and for so many alumni, truly a lifelong relationship.

Soon, you members of the Class of 2015 will go off to college, a time in your life for which you, as a

include not only the staff and faculty members many of you still know, like Fr. Peter, Fr. Michael, Abbot Aidan, Ms. Pelosi, Dr. Wood, and Paul Grenaldo, but also my classmates and their parents. Of course, there has been another key investor in our shared path as Abbey Boys, and that is our parents, whose sacrifice we may never comprehend, because we were focused on our educa-tion, and maybe a few other distractions.

This brings me to a long-overdue thanks I have to correct. Twenty-five years ago, I was fortunate enough to receive an award at the end-of-the-year Athletic Banquet. Instead of just stepping up and grabbing my award as I should have, I thought I would share my thoughts and thanks. I made sure to thank my Dad for the hours he spent driving me to and from games all over D.C., Maryland and Virginia. And that is where I stopped. (Mothers, feel free to openly cringe at this time). Much like your mothers, I am sure, mine cleaned thousands of pounds of dirty laundry resulting from those games and practices, prepared thousands of meals, and most importantly showed me great compas-sion, often after a long day’s work. Mom, thank you. You and Dad are my example for what I try to be as a parent and in service to this country.

There is a long list of “incidents” from my time at the Abbey for which I should probably also apologize, but that is not why I was asked here (Or, Fr. Peter, is there anything I still need to apologize for?) Frankly, I have forgotten the details of those incidents, but what I do remember is how good it felt to be in you graduates’ shoes. I had made it through the gauntlet that is St. Anselm’s, thanks to many of the people I mentioned above, as well as some who have since passed, includ-ing my basketball teammates Patrick Landers (’91) and Robert Beasley (’91), and of course our coach Brian Murphy. Brian toughened us up to prepare us for those games all over the region, while Pat and Rob were models of good character and good humor, even as we traveled the long way home after some hard games.

The work ethic I learned here and the selflessness of this community has motivated me throughout my life as something to strive for, because I would not have been where you are today if not for those gifts. I definitely would not have made it through Dr. Wood’s Physics class. After that, going to William & Mary, serving as a peacekeeper in the Balkans, and as an intelligence officer in Iraq seemed quite easy. (By the way, congratulations,

graduate of St. Anselm’s, are exceptionally well-pre-pared. You will have many new experiences. You will continue to pursue the love of learning that St. An-selm’s nurtured in you during your years at the school. And you will make many new friends. My prediction, though, is that many, if not most, of you will return to St. Anselm’s in the future, when you come home on break or during the holidays, so that you can visit with your former teachers and other members of the school community who have challenged you and guided you during your days as an Abbey Boy. And this is not a one-way street. I know for a fact that one of the real

joys for the monks, the faculty, and the other members of this community are those visits that you make back to the school to share with them what you are doing and to discuss your new interests and experiences. I also predict that you have already made friends here at St. Anselm’s who likely will remain your friends for the rest of your life.

Yes, St. Anselm’s is a very special place, and I hope and expect that as you and your families move on with your lives, you will continue to know, experience, and support the very special community that is St. Anselm’s Abbey School. Congratulations to you all! ♦

Good Afternoon. Abbot James, Abbot Aidan, Fr. Michael, Fr. Peter, Mr. Crittenberger, Mr. Morse, Mrs. Mahaffey, members of the monastic community, faculty, staff, and graduates of the Class of 2015:

My name is Matthew Abbruzzese, Class of 1990. I first need to make clear that these comments represent my own opinions, and not those of the Army or the Department of Defense.

The advice I received from your teachers about this speech was to be brief, be good, and be gone. So gentlemen, start your watches. While I have spent nearly my entire adult life as a soldier, my six years at St. Anselm’s have shaped who I have become as much as the last 25 years. I am sincerely indebted for the in-vestment this community made in my progression from child to young adult. In a community of this size, I

Avery Gray — Go Tribe!) I congratulate you all, because I know you’ve earned your place in those seats. Not just by memorizing answers or reading a book, but because you embraced your education.

This experience inspired me to teach. As a young officer, I was selected to go to Johns Hopkins for graduate school and then to teach International Re-lations to cadets at West Point. The officers there reinforced the role of education, as opposed to mere training. To illustrate that point, they told this story about the American author Gertrude Stein, who died in Paris in 1946. As she was lying on her deathbed, she suddenly had a moment of clarity and looked up at her gathered family and friends and asked, “What is the answer?” Their response was similar to what Dr. Wood often got from me: silence. In her case, she laughed and said: “Then, what is the question?” Which might have been a better response for me to use in Dr. Wood’s class.

To get after those questions, St. Anselm’s has armed you with passion for a true education, which informs your questions. Not just about the material covered in class, but why are you taking that class, and how are you spending your free time? Are the answers to those questions consistent with where you say you are headed? While six years at St. Anselm’s could not give me all the answers, it taught me to appreciate the value of a good question.

As the father of three boys, I now get a lot of ques-tions, mostly about Marvel superheroes, outer space, and somewhat fewer about the Army and America’s wars. Recently, my oldest son has upped his game in the quality and depth of his questions, so I am turning him over to the Abbey next fall for further development and molding. Son, I am not sure where the monks’ knowl-edge of Marvel superheroes stands, but I am sure they will help you develop your mind and your faith.

As a teacher at West Point and as an officer, I have tried to model myself after the community here,

approaching the question of where America is headed with honesty and integrity. For most of your lives, the answers to those questions have put the military in some tricky places, by the nature of where we were and still are today, and what we have been asked to do. So, I can’t tell you if joining the military is an answer to your questions, because I would not assume to know what your questions are. But the answers to your questions may still lead to hardship and sacrifice for you and your family. (By the way, thank you, Jennifer, Gus, Ben, and Sam for your sacrifices).

As men of voting age, I would ask that you serve your nation by continuing the path on which St. Anselm’s has set you. Educate yourselves so we can ensure that our nation is asking good questions and seeking honest answers. Because no matter how many smart people we have answering questions about the balance between liberty and security and our role in the world, if we are not asking the right questions in the first place, then our answers will not bring us peace.

As a member of such a small graduating class, many of you have had a chance to test your wings as a decision -maker or leader within this small community. I highly encourage you to continue to do so, in whatever field you pursue. No matter where you end up, just as you learned here, lead with positivity and integrity, and not through cynicism and fear. Keep in mind the values that you learned here in your pursuit of wisdom. I have sought to keep faith with St. Anselm’s by keeping these values in mind. It will be tough. But I believe if you are honest with yourself and others, and you have asked a good question, and you are willing to listen to the answer, it will help you get where you want to go.

My hope for you is that you have respect for the op-portunity afforded to you, and the character to listen to other people’s questions and answers, even when you disagree with them. And finally, never forget to thank your mother! ♦

Austin Scholar AwardHENRY BEH, ’15Abbot James, Fr. Peter, monks of the abbey, Mr. Crit-tenberger, faculty, family, friends, and my fellow mem-bers of the Class of 2015:

Two weeks ago, I was stopped in the hall by Mr. Pe-ter Young, and, somewhat against my will, drawn into the center of a group of prospective parents and stu-dents. I was then asked to answer what seemed to Mr. Young to be a simple question: “How would you sum up what seven years at St. Anselm’s has taught you?” While I’m sure he had the best of intentions, let’s just say I could have done with a little warning in advance.

Luckily for those of us here, I have had some time to collect my thoughts, and now I am ready to give the question another shot. St. Anselm’s has been for me a place that emphasizes academia, and so in keeping with this mindset, I will attempt to sum up seven years in four quick lessons. Wish me luck.

Lesson 1: Quality is better than quantityAlthough I would like to avoid bragging too much

about my class, we are probably some of the most inter-esting students you will find graduating. I’m sure you can see we aren’t the biggest high school class, but our small size means everyone gets a chance to shine, and no one is afraid to be an individual. There may be only 22 of us in the Class of 2015, but each of our interests, skills, merits, and most definitely our quirks make us a group that truly stands out from the rest.

Lesson 2: The value of collegialitySeven years ago, I was one of 14 students who came

to St. Anselm’s in sixth grade. Short, pretty scared, and unsure of what this school and monastery had in store for me, I met a fantastic group of guys and began to form the bonds of friendship that have only grown throughout the years. I remember at the beginning of the year, we were all asked to introduce ourselves and I, having been conditioned to spell out my name after being asked numerous times if I was related to a certain director, mumbled, “Beh. B-E-H.” I may have messed this up, and many of my classmates thought my name was something like “Baby H.” When one might expect criticism or jeering, especially from kids in sixth grade, I was greeted with friendly jokes and accepted quickly. My classmates, probably just as un-sure as I was, made me feel right at home in a place I had never been before. Through the good times, and through middle school, we have stuck together.

Even beyond our class, the Abbey had a way of bringing all students to-gether. Going back to when I was in sixth grade, I remember that among my list of friends was a senior named Wesley Mann. Wesley was an exceptional scholar, a bril-liant actor and writer, and someone who took the time to spend lunch with the A Formers every week. Even though I only knew Wesley for a year, he instilled in me the values that I think really make an Abbey Boy: dedication to school, to one’s own passions, and to the service of others, no matter who they are, or how short they are.

Lesson 3: Embrace the spirit After coming to school here for so many years, some-

times the mystery of it all tends to fade into the back-ground. I know most people call our school just St. Anselm’s and leaving off ‘Abbey School,’ but it’s the monks here that make it special. After taking some time to think about it, I realized that our school is in some ways a reflection of the monastery. As Fr. Peter teaches the little seventh graders Earth Science, he is not unlike the older monks at the monastery leading the Novices in their training. Or, each week as we gleefully gather to meet in school assembly, it is not unlike the Ves-pers that the monks pray at the end of each day. Even

beyond the monks themselves, the spirit of the mon-astery is present throughout the school. It manifests itself in the passion of the faculty and staff, in the way students treat each other, in the Kairos retreat, where last year my classmates and I bonded and came to know each other more deeply than ever before, and in the knowledge that we will take with us as we graduate to-day. Although we may leave this monastic school, know that wherever we go, the Spirit given to us will spread so that we create our own communities of learning and peace. And yes, Br. Ignacio, we’ll make sure to send some prospective monks over.

Lesson 4: Never give up I know it’s a little cliché, but my dad said no Chur-

chill quotes, so I had to change this one a little bit. Throughout our years here at the Abbey, life hasn’t al-ways been easy. Whether it is Mr. Corrigan telling you that you can’t drink coffee in class because it’s against the rules, even though it’s 7:45 in the morning and you had three hours of sleep thanks to an Ethics test, or a pop AP Lit. writing assignment just before lunch, let’s just say that sometimes we Abbey Boys find ourselves challenged on many fronts. But if I can say anything from my experiences here at the Abbey, it is that no

one feels down for long. Your class-mates sympathize with you without a second thought: “Yeah, I don’t think I did well either. Don’t worry; you’ll ace it next time.” Even when we were known as “that class,” we still stood together, and now we can be proud of how far we have come, and the ma-turity we have gained throughout the years.

Class of 2015, if any of you, while pursuing your future careers as engi-neers, mathematicians, writers, politi-

cians, doctors, lawyers, or whatever future you wish, find yourself feeling down or overwhelmed, just think back to your time at the Abbey, to the courage that powered you through those tough times, and remem-ber that before you were even legally adults, you en-countered painful hardships, disappointments, and set-backs; yet, you didn’t give up.

Each of us in the Class of 2015 takes away a different experience from our years spent here, and I have tried to capture all that we have learned as a class. In my own experience, one of the things that is most striking is how the school challenged me while, at the same time, motivating me to continue. I persisted because of the faith my teachers had in me, because of my classmates, because I found here a place where people care, where intelligence matters, and where kindness blossoms. So to the faculty who guided me, the friends and family who supported me, and the monks who instilled in me the values that I will have with me for the rest of my life: thank you, may God bless you, and best of luck in whatever comes ahead.

Live the Fourth. ♦

“I found here a place where people care, where intelligence

matters, and where kindness blossoms.”

Abbot James, Fr. Peter, Fr. Michael, Mr. Crittenberger, the monastic community, faculty, families, friends, and, most of all, the Class of 2015:

My coming to St. Anselm’s was almost accidental and definitely rushed. As a sixth grader, I remember my mom insisting that I go to the Catholic High School Fair at the Greenbelt Marriott. After spending two hours there, I was tired of talking to admissions offi-cers in suits and filling out little cards to get informa-tion about each of these high schools. Then I met Mr. Peter Young, who showed up a little late, in a leather jacket with a motorcycle helmet under his arm. I was intrigued, but thought nothing more of it, expecting to stay at Holy Redeemer, my old school, until high school. But that grand entrance stuck in my mind, and suddenly, in July, I visited and took the entrance exam on the same day, was accepted early in August, and just two weeks before the start of the school year, I decided to attend St. Anselm’s. To say the least, I was anxious.

I arrived at St. Anselm’s and sat with many of the students behind me in this very theater on the first day of school. Henry Beh, the graduate who just spoke, reached over to me right here in the Devine Theater, and said, “Hello my name is Henry, what’s yours?” I immediately felt at ease. What I did not expect, though, was the rest of the class — the young men that sit be-hind me today, who have been by my side, helping and supporting me for six years.

We had a tough time in middle school. We struggled to forge a class “identity” and form the cohesive group of “Abbey Brothers” that so many graduates come back and talk about. We always seemed to be at each other’s throats and causing trouble. However, starting in sophomore year and culminating at the Kairos re-treat, we began to come together as a class and, slowly but steadily, became the extremely tight-knit group of Abbey Brothers we are today. We were even given the name “The Amoeba” by last year’s graduating class, because it seemed that, wherever we went, we went together.

When I look back now on all the trouble our class got into over the years, it is hard not to think of what we overcame to be successful student leaders. We ran what many called the most organized House Day and Field Day, ran four successful dances over the course of the year (much to the happiness of the student body), ran a successful Thanksgiving food drive, re-started the Penny Wars, which had not occurred in three years, sponsored bar-becues during sporting events to raise attendance, and were the catalyst that reformed the middle school govern-ment.

My great aunt, an old Italian lady

St. Anselm of Canterbury AwardC.J. PIZZANO, ’15

with a thick Boston accent, used to tell me at the end of her long stories about her life, “Not bad for a little girl from Revere, Mass;” and now, after all this class has accomplished, despite its small size, I’d like to say, “Not bad for a class of 22 students.” We are a diverse group of young men with many different ambitions, talents, dreams, and interests-among us is a talented fic-tion writer, a composer who worked for the great Hans Zimmer this past summer, a Latin scholar who will be publishing a textbook soon, an extremely smart stu-dent from Vietnam, and student who is quite possibly one of the best artists I’ve ever seen, just to name a few.

I have no doubt that all of these graduates, my broth-ers, will be successful in college and beyond guided by the hallmarks of the Benedictine Ethos we learned here at St. Anselm’s — Love of Christ and Neighbor, Prayer, Stability, Daily Commitment to God, Obedience, Dis-cipline, Humility, Stewardship, Hospitality, and Com-munity.

I would like to conclude my speech with an Italian phrase that my dad once said to me, and that I have adapted to fit this speech. I apologize in advance, Ms. Pelosi, for my terrible Italian pronunciation, and no I will not be able to go play in traffic following this cer-emony. The phrase goes like this; it is short and sweet: “Ciao Sant’Anselmo, e grazie mille. Ci vediamo presto.” Goodbye, St. Anselm’s and thank you. We will see you again soon. ♦

“Intellectual curiosity is fundamental to the pursuit of our deepest passions because we always want to learn more, ask why, and vary the lens through which we look.”

Alumni SpeakerMATTHEW LYNCH, ’04Good afternoon, faculty, parents, monks, and students:

As I stand before you, I reflect on where I am today. I proudly work in the service of the Department of Defense, first as an analyst and now as an intelligence program manager. I am a happily married husband and new father of a beautiful little girl. I remain an involved member of the St. Anselm’s community as a member of the Alumni Board and an annual supporter of the Scholarship Gala.

To understand why I still believe so strongly in this community, we have to go back. Was it the chance to play soccer all four years? Was it the lasting insight into myself at Kairos my junior year? Was it as simple as being a member of Alban House? While these were valuable experi-ences, it was something more funda-mental, more unique to the Abbey. St. Anselm’s dramatically changed my approach to intellectual curiosity as the way in which we define our-selves and our place in the world around us.

So what is intellectual curiosity? We could define it as the desire to learn more about a person or a thing or a way of life. This is not rote memorization of Wiki-pedia entires or endless Google searches. We hear that each generation is exposed to exponentially more in-formation, but are we actually using that information to pursue knowledge, to learn, to improve? Without

Form II Transitionasking why, then further questioning the re-ceived answer, and, most importantly, explor-ing your own alternative answers, what have we accomplished? Question your faculty, the monks, your parents, not in some childish game of embarrassment but because you are rising young men who have far more room to grow new ideas.

Intellectual curiosity is fundamental to the pursuit of our deepest passions because we always want to learn more, ask why, and vary the lens through which we look. It is not easy. It takes a self-driven motivation. It takes per-severance in the face of the inevitable inertia of the status quo and the reality that, even when faced with new facts, we are all are slow to change our beliefs.

The good news is that intellectual curiosity is habit-forming and gets easier with practice. Over the next four years, you have a willing laboratory in which to practice, and hopefully you have already started.

Beyond the gates of St. Anselm’s, there is a world in need of your intelligence and your willingness to make a change. Whether through the Boy Scouts, a creek clean-up, or raising social awareness of a chal-lenge facing your community, you have opportunities to make a difference in ways both small and large, both today and tomorrow. Abbey Boys have the dual bless-ings of exceptional minds and a place to explore their passions.

So I’m going to leave you with a challenge. Have lots of fun with family and friends, because laughter is one of the most powerful forces in the world. Be open to new people, especially those who are not like you because those people will help you grow the most (yes, even girls; maybe especially girls). Challenge yourself to new experiences every year. In the last 10 years, I have done a pilgrimage to Italy for World Youth Day, back-packed for weeks around Morocco with a friend, deployed for an entire summer to Afghanistan, ran a Tough Mudder with the head coach of the

Baltimore Ravens, and this past year I went skydiv-ing for the first time. Most importantly, embrace the possibilities and responsibility of intellectual curiosity, because it will take you to places that you could never imagine. I wish you the best of luck, my prayers, and I cannot wait to see the difference that you young men will make in the future. ♦

Form II Student SpeakerCARLO PIZZANO

Good afternoon, faculty, staff, parents, and students of St. Anselm’s Abbey School:

I am here to talk about the experiences that have formed the bond and brotherhood of our Form II class. We are a really connected class.

When I first got here, I feared it would be a dull, overly-sophisticated school. I did not know if it was right for me, but I trusted the school and took the chance. After just the first week of school, I was truly a part of “The Abbey.” While my new school demanded high standards, it was definitely NOT a dull, overly-so-phisticated school. In fact, my classmates and I share so many memories.

I’ll never forget Mr. Fries’ class. Mr. Fries, thank you for your patience with all of us over the last two years. Once Fr. Peter found out my last name was Pizazio — I mean Pizzano — he began to recruit me to water his plants after my big brother, CJ, graduates. Thank you, Mr. Mehigan, for your five classes last year; your stories never bore us. Thank you, Mr. Leathers, for all those poems — and are you sure you are okay? This year, I think I will always remember History class with Mr. Achilles. We still cannot figure out if it’s a story or if we are supposed to take notes. Br. Ignacio… Religion? More like Greek and Latin to us. Thank you, Br. Ig-nacio, for your great in-class discussions. Ms. Dunne, thank you for the many grammar lessons. Ms. Enzel, it has been an adventure, but in the end, everyone nos divertimos mucho. Thank you, Dr. Joseph, for your Fu-turama Fridays, and we always enjoyed your baguettes and brie. Thank you, Mr. Gubartalla, for coaching

soccer for me for one game. Thank you, Fr. Castro, for Quizlet, and we will miss you a lot. Thank you, Mr. Crittenberger, for worksheets and especially for your patience. Mr. Corrigan, your voice has kept me awake in class, and I will always remember to bring my text-book to class. Mr. Taylor, thank you for all the corny jokes and equations. Thank you, Ms. Dunne and Dr. Joseph, for having delicious Form II lunches.

Now, multiply all these stories by infinity, and that’s how many memories I have individually with my class-mates. Some of the best ones are with the students transferring to other schools; we will surely miss you guys. St. Anselm’s Abbey School is truly our home as a place to learn and to have a brotherhood with ev-eryone. Because of our class’s great bond together, I feel positive we have a bright future in store. Thank you to all who have shaped my classmates and me as students and individuals. These years have been great. Thank you! ♦

On the day of their Transition Service, the Form II class is with (left to right): Matthew Lynch, ’04; Headmaster Bill Crittenberger; President Fr. Peter Weigand, OSB; Head of the Middle School Thomas Mehigan; Form II Advisor Janine Dunne; Chaplain Fr. Michael Hall, OSB; and Form II Advisor Dr. Larry Joseph.
