University Visits Edge Hill University & Liverpool John Moores University

Year 12 students spent the day at both Edge Hill University and Liverpool John Moores University to gain a greater insight into university life and all it entails. Students participated in various subject taster sessions, a campus and accommodation tour and a UCAS introduction presentation.

This will hopefully support them in the completion of their university applications later this year.

Skills North West Convention

Year 13 students who have decided not to pursue

university were invited to attend the Skills North

West Convention to give students the opportunity to

speak with numerous apprenticeship companies

with regards to future career opportunities. The

event featured a range of companies from the BBC

to Aldi.

It was time to wish our fabulous Year 13 students a fond farewell on Thursday 6th

July. The celebration meal took place at The Surgery restaurant owned by our very own ex teacher Andrew Kershaw and, as always, it was a brilliant evening with lots of reminiscing and laughter. It’s now time for the Year 13 students to take the next step on their journey and we wish them every success and happiness in what are sure to be very bright futures ahead!

“I especially enjoyed the Edge Hill campus trip and I think it will definitely be one of my choices next year.” Leah Brooks

UCAS Convention Year 12 students visited the annual UCAS fair held at Manchester Central.

This gave students the opportunity to speak with a number of HE representatives with regards to their offer, course details, entry requirements, etc.

Those that attended found it a very informative day. “After talking to some of the universities I now know exactly what grades I need to get to do the course I want to do.” Waisy Da’Silva

At the end of every term the Science teachers face a very difficult task ...... they are asked to choose just one student from their Year 7 and 8 classes as their Science Star. These students are selected for a variety of reasons such as excellent effort, enthusiasm for Science, biggest improvement or exceeding their personal targets. For the Summer Term our Science Stars are: Year 7 – Barry Daniels, Hoa Low, Hussein Al-Taaie, Sophie Bouttell, Layla Jepson, Fortune Uwadiae-Ehioghae. Year 8 – Mina Greenhalgh, Morgan Ashton, Norah Ndermera, Amber Thompson, Callum Hill. The lucky winners received a certificate and a science gadget kit for them to experiment with at home. Congratulations to all our winners this term – we are very proud of you!

Young people today are full of brilliant and imaginative ideas. The official curriculum doesn’t always give them the freedom to ex-press those ideas in just the way that they want. So this was the chance to let them loose! To celebrate National Writing Day, the English and Media Centre hosted an exhibition of ‘unguided’ writing by secondary students and their teachers. A range of the most interesting writing will be exhibited on their website and certificates will be awarded, in school, to the Year 7, 8 and 9 students who took part.

Hardwick Hall Visit On Thursday 29th June, Year 10 History students visited Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire as part of their GCSE. We had an eventful day with bad weather and mechanical trouble with the coach but, despite this, we managed to persevere and enjoy the day regardless. All in all, it was an informative day discussing ghosts, food and the status of the rich in Elizabethan times! There was lots to see in the Hall and this should provide students with a huge amount of memories to use in the exam at the end of Year 11.

Middleton for Me..

Y10 Geography students have been study-

ing hard for their exam preparation. They

have been looking at the gentrification of

Middleton and visited several locations in the

town to discuss the improvements that are

being made to our community.

The students were on their best behaviour

and represented the Academy well, as well

as learning a lot about the community that

they live in!

STEM Roadshow 2017

During the Spring Term, all Year 7 and 8 students enjoyed the unique STEM Roadshow interactive experience. Students learned about the world of drones and explored related career opportunities. This was delivered in partnership with the BAE Systems Education Programme, the RAF and the Royal Navy.

Year 8 Careers Carousel

This July, Year 8 enjoyed our first ever ‘Careers Carousel’. Students split into small groups and had a 10 minute workshop with one local business before the whistle blew and they had to move to the next workshop with a new business! These organisations offered an exciting range of information, advice and hands-on experiences for the students. The event was a great success for our students who were pleased to try out the activities. Students could learn directly from employers about the skills and qualifications they need to achieve their dreams. Contributors this year included Greater Manchester Higher, Casey Construction, Join the Dot, Chamber of Commerce and Richard Whittaker Ltd.

Choices – Careers Information, Advice and Guidance 2017

All Year 10 students from the Academy joined with 100 businesses this spring for the Choices 2017 Annual Careers and Skills Event. The event gave our students an introduction to the world of work, with local businesses exhibiting the kind of activities they undertake and offering hands-on experiences for the students on the day. Based on the experiential model of seeing, doing and exploring, as well as action planning, the event featured skills competitions, interactive have a go activities, employer led features, talks and demonstrations from industry experts and professional advice on careers. The event was a great success and raised the aspirations of our students who were pleased to try out the hands-on activities and hear talks from leading businesses.

Year 10 Skills Week

Year 10 students had a superb week participating in Skills Week at the Academy. The students enjoyed working on various projects and initiatives to develop their work and life skills to improve wellbeing and prepare them for the adult world. Activities during the week included: Visit to MMU, Nutrition, wellbeing, gardening project, investigating the environment, using initiative and craftsmanship, presentation and public speaking skills, enterprise, body language and a ‘Dragon’s Den’ competition.

Many thanks to the businesses who provide placements for our students, these include: Primary Schools, Pet Hotels, Horse-riding school, Doctors’ Surgeries, Leisure Centre, Garages, Nurseries, Farms, Banks, Community Centres, Catteries, Retail, Rochdale Council, Hospitals, Mechanics, Police Force, Hair and Beauty Salons and Veterinary Surgeries.

We are delighted with our Year 10 students who took part in work experience placements. Work experience can be crucial in helping young people to build work skills and prepare for the transition to the world of work. Furthermore, it is a great experience for building confidence and motivation, which can improve students’ overall wellbeing and academic success.

PERFORMING ARTS Verona 1300 or Middleton 2017? The Year 10 Performing Arts group have taken up a major challenge this year. Working as a theatre company they have produced and performed their own version of Romeo and Juliet. The students worked in three pathways; acting, music and production to fulfil roles within the production. The actors chose to set the play in modern day Middleton. The illusion was enhanced by a digital set, created by the production team that included local images. Music was chosen to enhance the drama and the musicians learned to play much of it themselves, including several pieces they composed for the occasion. The initial research into the play, the process of designing their own version, the rehearsal and shaping of the piece and the final performance all contributed to the students’ final grades in Unit 2 BTEC Performing Arts. Well done to all concerned.

KS3 Drama Disasters! Year 7 Drama Lessons this term have gone back to the beginning – literally! Students have been looking at the context and history of Classical Greek Theatre using the play ‘Antigone.’ Through this, students have explored the concept of natural disasters and the Greeks’ use of theatre to please the Gods. In Year 8, students have further considered the concept of disaster, in terms of man-made and natural disasters as both a stimulus to create their own drama and perform the script ‘Last Man Standing.’ In Year 9, this term, lessons have been inspired by the physical impact of a disaster and the creation of special effects makeup. This ever popular topic enables students to create realistic looking theatrical wounds using latex, derma wax and fake blood. The results as you can see can be very realistic and alarming. Everyone has been fully engaged in the learning and a fun time has been had by all. Fortunately, alarm is avoided by the use of a little soap and water, ensuring complete and instant recovery before leaving the room!

#SAGT !! Our annual search for a star ‘St Anne’s Got Talent’ will take place on 19th July. The performers endured a gruelling audition process to secure a spot in the show. Staff had the very painstaking task of whittling the 35 talented youngsters to a mere 18! The students are now in the process of rehearsing after school to perfect their skills before the big night. This year, we are proud to present a range of talents; singers, dancers, a beat-boxer , comedians and even a card trickster!

The students who performed at the Rochdale Schools Athletics Championships excelled themselves. We are proud to announce that the Y9 Boys team, won the Boys’ competition for their Year Group with the Y8 Boys and Y10 Girls coming 3rd within their respective competitions. Overall the combined Boys’ teams came 3rd and the Girls’ teams came 7th, and combined, the Academy came 5th. This is a truly outstanding effort as there are 11 schools competing with significantly larger numbers from which to select.

Rounders

Girls’ PE had three Rounders Teams competing in the Rochdale Rounders Tournaments. Every Year Group entered competes in three tournaments overall and four

games every night.

Well done for your commitment and efforts girls!

On Friday 31st March thirty Year 9 and two Year 7 very excited pupils, Mrs Whittingham, Mr Windley, Mr Lee

and Miss Patriarco set off for 5 days in Andalucía, Southern Spain. It was an early start with a 5.00am check in

at Manchester Airport, however this didn’t dampen the high spirts and enthusiasm! We landed in Málaga to

beautiful sunshine and made our way to Benalmádena to check into our accommodation.

Our visit in Spain included days out, firstly to Ronda, a beautiful town approximately 2 hours

away from Málaga. We had the opportunity to look round the traditional Spanish shops and

take in the views from ‘El Tajo’ a 390 foot gorge that splits the town in two sections, the an-

cient Moorish area and the new town ‘El Mercadillo’. Next stop was the upmarket town of

Puerto Banús on the coast, everyone had a fantastic time looking round the designer shops

and taking in the magnificent yachts in the harbour.

We also had the opportunity to visit the city of Sevilla, 3 hours away from Málaga but well

worth the coach journey. We had a quick stop off at Sevilla FC on the drive into the city

then, once we all got off the coach, we had a few hours to spend at the wonderful Plaza De

España in the María Luisa Park, where some of us took a boat trip or simply spent some

time taking in the beautiful tiled alcoves, each one representing a region of Spain. From

there we made our way into the city centre and visited the Giralda Tower and Gothic Cathe-

dral. We also had some time to have something to eat and a trip round the many shops that

Seville has to offer.

The next day we visited Tivoli World which is a theme park in the centre of Benalmádena.

Everyone went on the rides and had a great day in the beautiful sunshine.

On our last day we took a cable car ride to the highest point of the Costa del Sol where you

can see the Sierra Nevada mountains and on a clear day the coast of North Africa. Next

stop was a trip to the beach and a visit around the harbour in Benalmádena.

All too soon it was time to come home. We had a fantastic time in Spain and are already

planning our next visit! One visit to Spain is never enough… It was a pleasure to spend

time with such fantastic young people and they all did the Academy and their parents very

BULLETIN BOARD

Students Return to the Academy on Wednesday 6 September 2017:

What is the Luncheon Club?

Since 2010 St Anne’s Academy have partnered up with Demesne Community Centre and offered a wide range of activities for both our students and Demesne. Our newest venture in 2016 was to create a luncheon club for local residents.

Thursday afternoon Luncheon Club provides a chance to socialise, meet friends and have a hot meal. The club tries hard to cater for everybody's different dietary and cultural needs.

June, one of our club members, says, “It’s for the companionship as well as the novelty of having someone else cook.”

Fran, another club member, says, “We celebrate special occasions such as Christmas and Easter lunches with all the trimmings and entertainment.”

St Anne’s Luncheon Club not only helps Demesne, it is used as an opportunity for our students to meet and get involved with the wider community.

Children’s Bus Fares from 1 September 2017 From 1 September, the fare structure will be simplified so that children are all charged a flat fare. This will replace the existing system whereby children are charged one of three different fares depending on the distance they travel.

For children with igo passes, the new single fare will be £1.30, the new return fare will be £2.20 and the new cost of the school weekly ticket will be £7.00.

Children who do not have igo passes will continue to be charged a default single fare which, from September, will be £1.70. Children without igo passes are also unable to buy either returns or weekly tickets.

There are still a number of school buses where fares are set by the operator and which will therefore be unaffected by these changes.

Full details on which school services will be affected will be provided on www.tfgm.com before the start of the new school year.

Increase in Price of

School lunches

From September 2017
