PASTOR Dear Friends: As we begin the month of October next Sunday, traditionally, the month of October honors Mary, the mother of Jesus
and is specifically dedicated to the Holy Rosary. Mary, our Mother is most closely and personally associated with the
Gospel of life. She is in fact the mother of the Life by which everyone lives. The image of Mary in its many forms is woven
throughout the life of the Church and her importance is expressed in doctrine, liturgy, piety, devotion and theology. One
important devotion during this month is the praying of the Holy Rosary: individually, family and communally. By its nature
the recitation of the Rosary is relaxing and calls for a quiet rhythm and a lingering pace, helping the individual to meditate
on the mysteries of the Lord’s life as seen through the eyes of her who was closest to the Lord. Parents, teach the Holy
Rosary to your children - if you need helpful brochures/booklets, call the parish office. I would urge and encourage also the
praying of Mary’s well-known and famous prayer, The Magnificat, found in Luke 1:46-55. This prayer is indeed the first
human proclamation of the gospel in that Gospel written by Luke. The importance of Mary’s faith to each one of us cannot
be stressed enough, for Mary’s faith makes possible God’s entrance into history. What a model Mary can be for women
and men in our world today. For like Mary, our call is to hear the word of God, to believe it, and then to act upon that
belief. In those special moments in our lives when we hear God’s call to us, may we have the courage as Mary did to
answer, “Let it be done to me according to your word” (Lk.1:38). October is also Right of Life month. Next Sunday (the first Sunday in October) is Respect Life Sunday. It was begun
in 1972 and is sponsored by the United States Bishops’ Committee for Pro-Life Activities. It stresses the value and dignity
of human life and is observed in Catholic dioceses throughout the United States. The observance emphasizes concern for
all human life, especially that of the unborn, the elderly, persons with disabilities, the terminally ill, and others whose lives
are easily threatened. We pray for the honor, dignity, respect and appreciation of all human life. When God created each
of us, God did so with precision and purpose, and looks on each of us with love that cannot be outdone in intensity or
tenderness. Moreover, the Lord invites each of us to behold ourselves and each other with the same wonder and awe. No
matter how the world might view us or others, let us treat each person as the masterpiece that she or he is. “Even the
weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor, are masterpieces of God's creation, made in God's own
image, destined to live forever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect.” (Pope Francis' Day for Life Greeting). This
year, the theme for Respect Life is: Be Not Afraid: “Behold, I am with you always, until the end of the
age” (Matthew 28:20). As a society and as individuals, we often measure ourselves by false standards: by what and how
much we do, our successes or failures, how others treat us, the degree of our pleasure or independence, etc. And when
these changeable substitutes prove to be insufficient, or when we are faced with challenges and suffering, we may feel
helpless, alone or abandoned; we may be tempted to feel as though our lives have decreased value or worth. But God’s
love – individual, real, unchanging – is the true source of our worth, identity, and dignity. It really is not a question of who
we are, but rather whose we are. Because his love will never change, nothing can reduce our God-given dignity, and
nothing can diminish the immeasurable worth of our lives. Next week (Oct 2-6) I’ll be attending our Annual Fall Clergy Workshop. As usual, all priests are expected to be
present and participate as their energies allow them. This is part of the clergy continuing education for the diocese. This
gathering allows priests and the bishop, time for study, prayer/reflection, interaction with one another, and recreation to-
gether. Please do keep us in your prayers, as we shall also do. There will be no daily morning Mass Tuesday through Friday. Something to think about:
There was once a mouse that found a mouse trap in the farmer’s house. The mouse rushed out and shouted to the pig, “There’s a mouse
trap in the house!” The pig responded, “Well, you have a problem”. The mouse rushed to the cow and raise the same alarm, “There is a
mouse trap in the house!” The cow responded as the pig had - “Your problem not mine”. That afternoon a viper’s tail was caught in the
mouse trap. The snake lay there writhing with rage not dead but unable to escape. The farmer’s wife came along and the viper bit her. The
farmer came home and found his wife deeply ill from the bite. He called the local doctor who told him, “Feed her some pork and she’ll
recover”. So the farmer slaughtered the pig, cooked the pork and fed it to his ailing wife. She died anyway. A huge funeral took place. To
feed the multitude the farmer slaughtered the cow and cooked its meat for the mourners.
Peace and Blessings to you! Fr. Masabakhwa, R.
