FROM THE PASTOR
TRANSFIGURATION – Each year on the second Sunday of Lent our Tradition
presents us with an account of the Transfiguration of the Lord. While the accounts of
Matthew, Mark and Luke are very similar, there are some significant differences
among them. For instance, it is only in the Gospel according to Mark (this year) that
we hear these words: “As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged
them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had
risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves,
questioning what rising from the dead meant.”
DYING, RISING as BEING TRANSFIGURED – Blessed Oscar Romero,
the Archbishop of San Salvador who was martyred in 1983, once preached
these words on a second Sunday of Lent: "This Lent, which we observe amidst
blood and sorrow, ought to presage a transfiguration of our people, a
resurrection of our nation. The church invites us to a modern form of penance, of fasting and prayer—perennial Christian practices, but adapted to the
circumstances of each person. Feeling in one's own flesh the consequences of sin and injustice, one is stimulated to work for social justice and a genuine
love for the poor. Our Lent should awaken a sense of social justice."
ONGOING CONVERSION – St. Paul puts it so well: “ I urge you therefore,
brothers, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and
pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but be
transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of
God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. (Romans 12:1-2)
SACRAMENTAL ENCOUNTER – For those living
sacramentally, a big part of ongoing conversion of life is
encountering Jesus in the Sacrament of Penance and
Reconciliation. See the Pastor ’s Por tion of our par ish
homepage for some helps in examining conscience, and
check the homepage also for our Lenten Confession
schedule and other related materials.
PRAY, FAST, LEARN, GIVE – CRS Rice Bowl - This week we encounter Cesia in
Nicaragua, where, despite a lack of economic opportunity, young people pursue their
dreams by building businesses to better their lives. How can you work to improve the
lives of others this Lent? How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to
flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities? Visit crsricebowl.org for more.
At the end of Lent, we ask you to convert your Rice Bowl donations into one check
and place that check into the collection basket on Holy Thursday or on Easter Sunday.
CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL – The 2018 Catholic Charities
Appeal (CCA) officially begins today. Each registered household
in our parish will receive a direct mailing from the CCA campaign but for more information now
visit https://www.catholiccharitiesappeal.org or check our parish social media.

poverty, food shortages, disease and migration. This

African brothers and sisters and support pastoral projects
that are so needed. To learn more visit www.usccb.org/

This past Sunday, ten men and women from our RCIA/
RICA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) group
participated in the Rite of Election at Sts. Peter and Paul
Cathedral where upon the testimony of their sponsors of
the groups intention to join the Church, the Church made
its “election” that these individuals may continue in their
preparation to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at the
Easter Vigil. Please pray for the men and women from
our parish who are preparing to enter the Church at
Easter, that they will be blessed in these days of
preparation.
