DESCRIPTION

St Andrew’s Parish had been wanting a community gathering place for over 100 years and with the advent of the BER program they were able to achieve this goal. The multi purpose hall (MPH) is a community facility that makes a positive contribution to the streetscape. The new facility replaces an outdoor basketball court, an existing shelter shed and a stand of gum trees. The image of these trees is retained by creating an embossed pattern in the concrete panels. This tree reference is reinforced by the internal wall panelling to the hall which has a routed pattern derived from the age rings of a tree. Integral to the School’s brief was for the MPH to maintain strong visual and physical connections between the hardcourt play area to the west and the grassed playing oval to the east. The siting of the MPH affords these strong indoor/outdoor connections via tilt up doors on the western side of the hall and amenities and storage facilities that can be accessed both internally and externally on the eastern side. The building’s materiality of concrete and timber relate directly to these diverse interfaces with the existing school.

Case StudySt Andrew’s Primary SchoolMulti Purpose Hall

The challenge for this project was to design a multi-purpose hall that related to both the hard courts to the west and green space to the east of the site.

The existing ‘stand of the trees’ that occupied the site became a reference for the embossed pattern in the concrete panels.

The materiality of the project is derived from its interface with the existing school:– Embossed concrete panels relating to the hard courts to the west– Timber cladding relating to the green space to the east.
