St. Andrew's E-News
Greetings!
From the Search Committee
The Search Committee’s work has intensified through the fall. After receiving a healthy
number of applications from candidates in September, the Search Committee interviewed the
most qualified candidates via videoconferences in October. We were blessed to have the
opportunity to meet several really excellent candidates, and it was difficult to narrow down
our choices. After prayerful consideration, the Search Committee has invited a small number
of candidates for in-person interviews, which will take place over the next few weeks. During
these visits, we will be using parts of the church building to meet with the candidates, and will
put up signage requesting privacy to protect the confidentiality of the priests involved.
Our search process is proceeding as planned and on schedule, and we hope to be able to
complete the search before Christmas. The starting date of the new Rector will then be
determined by the priest and the Vestry, and will of course depend on the priest’s current
work and family obligations. We ask that you continue to hold the Search Committee and the
candidates in your prayers.
Worship Announcements
New Member Liturgy, November 24
Next week, in both our service, we will formally welcome those of you who started attending
St. Andrew’s in the last year. Please come forward on November 24 during the peace for a
special welcome and prayer.
Advent Lessons and Carols, December 8
Our traditional Advent Carol Service of sacred Word and music will be led by our adult choir,
organist and guest oboist, Dr. Ashley Barret. During the 10 am service, scripture readings are
interspersed with choral presentations and hymns, all of which recall mankind’s longing for
liberation from sin and death, and our hope and expectation for the coming of Christ the
Lord.
Christmas Gift Ministry, December 8
As in past years, St. Andrew’s will participate in a Christmas gift ministry and celebrate the
Feast of St. Nicholas with a visit from this well-loved saint during worship on Sunday,
December 8, as we present and give gifts and offerings for children in foster care. Beginning
Sunday, November 17, we will post Christmas wish lists for parishioners to pick up and fulfill
during a 3-week period ending on December 8. Don’t forget to bring your gifts, unwrapped
and with the original tag, to church or the church office on or by December 8.
Service AnnouncementsReverse Advent Calendar
Have you ever used an Advent calendar to count down the days till Christmas? We’ve got a
new idea for community service this year. How about adding a grocery item to a box each day
of Advent, creating a gift of food for a hungry family? It’s called a Reverse Advent Calendar
and its very simple— set aside a box and add one food item to it each day from December 1 to
Christmas Eve. Then bring it to church as a gift for the baby Jesus. We provide the list and
you provide the love! We’ll start distributing the list on November 17. This project is IN
ADDITION TO your regular participation in the maroon bag donation program.
United Thank Offering
The United Thank Offering envelopes are hanging on the back of the pews for donations on
Sunday. Please consider making a donation and put the envelope in the collection plate. The
UTO Board awards grants to young adults, seminarians, parishes and dioceses in the
Episcopal Church. The grants are for one-year projects designed to support transforming and
innovative ministries. They need our support.
Fellowship and Christian Formation Announcements
EYC (Episcopal Youth Community)
The EYC will meet Sunday, November 17 from 5:30-7 in the Parish Hall. The youth will have
fun taking part in a Lighted Christmas Ball workshop.
A film called "Emanuel: The Untold Story of The Victims and Survivors of The
Charleston Church Shooting"
THE THURSDAY NIGHT PROGRAM preceding the first day of the Annual Convention is an
event traditionally attended by those arriving early for Convention. This year's program
focuses on an event of deep emotion and impact, and we hope all who have an interest in
racial justice and healing will come and be a part of it.
Join us for a special showing of the film, "Emanuel: The Untold Story of The Victims and
Survivors of The Charleston Church Shooting" on Thursday, November 21 at 7:15 p.m. at the
Benton Convention Center, Winston-Salem. Produced by Stephen Curry and Viola Davis, this
heartbreaking and inspiring documentary powerfully weaves together the history of race
relations in Charleston, the significance and impact of the mass shooting at Mother Emanuel
Church, and the hope and forgiveness that emerge in the aftermath. The film will be followed
by panel discussion, featuring Polly Sheppard, a survivor of the shooting. Due to its difficult
content, the film contains disturbing images and is designed for mature audiences only.
Registration at Convention is not required, nor is there a cost to attend this event. Admission
will be on a first-come, first-served basis until the room reaches capacity. For more
information, contact the Rev. Ginny Inman. This event will not be livestreamed, nor will
there be a recording offered following the event.
Deck the Halls19 Days and Counting to December 7
Please stop by the table in the Parish Hall to order your wreath, centerpiece, drop off
your wine donation, get a ticket for Cruisin' the Hills and so much more.
Baked Goods Donations
It’s not too early to think about your contribution to our baked goods sale. Last year we
sold out of gingerbread houses, so get your order in early. Mrs. Claus needs you!
Wine Pull Donations
Wine Pull donations are still needed to get us to our goal of 120 bottles. It was a great
success last year and goes far in raising much-needed funds for Mission and
Outreach. Y our donation of a bottle, or two, valued at $10-$12 will help us reach our
goals.
Poinsettia Pre-order
Poinsettia sales are going strong! Colors this year are red, white, and pink. These
beautiful plants are not your Walmart variety. Orders can be taken during Coffee Hour
or on-line at the website. Last day for ordering is November 24.
