Advent Sermon Series: Expect the Unexpected

Advent marks the beginning of another year in the cycle of Scriptures that presents the narrative of the love of God revealed to the world. ENTRANCE AND GATHERING

Welcome and Grace of Hospitality

*Bringing In the Light of Christ and Opening Praise No. 204 Emmanuel, Emmanuel

Lighting the Advent Candle of Hope Trent, Kara, Tanner, and Brenton Graham A Litany for the Chrismon Tree (responsively) The tree is in place, reminding us of the beginning of the Advent season. It’s time to thank God for the Christ Child’s birth. We thank the Lord for dwelling with us and being with us in this moment. The tree has been placed in its stand with its top pointing heavenward. We thank you, dear Jesus, for coming down from heaven above to stand on this earth on our behalf against the powers of sin, death, and evil. The lights on the tree shine brightly and beautifully. We thank you, dear Jesus, for being born to us as the Light of the World, a Light no darkness can overcome. The Chrismons, symbols of Jesus’ life, identity, and ministry, have been lovingly placed on the tree, decorating its branches. We thank you, dear Jesus, for decorating us with your hope, peace, joy, and love.

O Tannenbaum

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, How lovely are thy branches!

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, How lovely are thy branches!

Not only green when summer’s here But in the coldest time of year.

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, How lovely are thy branches.

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, How sturdy God hath made thee!

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, How sturdy God hath made thee! Thou bidd’st us all place faithfully Our trust in God, unchangingly!

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, How sturdy God hath made thee!

*Prayer of Approach (in unison) Lord Jesus, this tree reminds us that your love for us is evergreen. Your mercies are ever new. Your grace is ever present. Your gifts of love are ever sure. In this season, help us to remember as we worship around this tree and all of its symbolism, that our expressions of worship are offerings of our thanks for the greatest gift of Yourself that you shared with all the world on Christmas night, that we might be blessed with forgiveness, salvation, and everlasting life. Amen. *Hymn No. 185 When Morning Gilds the Skies
