The Society of St. Vincent DePaul St. Andrew the Apostle Conference neighbor helping neighbor… Our helpline 815-886-4165 ext. 304

All calls are confidential with callbacks within 24 hours.

In today’s Gospel John the Baptist urges us to “Prepare the way of the Lord,” and this is what Advent is all about. We are called to help prepare the way of the Lord by making the real meaning of Christmas come alive in our own hearts, in our family and to reach out to others in need. This Wednesday as we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe let us offer our prayers in thanksgiving for all the love shown to us by others and ask Our Lady’s intercession to spread the faith of Jesus Christ to those who are lonely and without hope and faith. We are his disciples…let us do our best always.

Consider joining our St. Vincent de Paul Group this Tuesday at 7 PM in the Mobile Units. All Parishioners of St. Andrew the Apostle will have an opportunity to have their homes enthroned with the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Legion of Mary will host this enthronement at no cost to you; it’s absolutely free! All you have to do is go to the back of the Church after all the Masses on December8&9. The members of the legion will be available to you. The only requirement is that you pray the consecration prayers on the day you receive your enthronement form, sign it, and receive a copy of the optional daily prayer. The Diocese of Joliet had requested this be done as early as 2012. The Legion of Mary would normally perform the enthronements in homes which previously required two visits. It had been requested that there be a more convenient way to perform the enthronements, in order to do as many as possible. Pope John Paul II, in a talk given to families of the world, said, “AlwayskeepyoureyesontheSacredHeartofJesus,Kingandcenterofallhearts.FromHimyouwilllearnthegreatlessonoflove, ofgoodness, ofsacri ice, ofpiety, sonecessaryforeveryChristianfamily.” Also, there are 12 promises given to St. Margaret Mary by Our Lord Jesus for those devoted to His Sacred Heart. 1. I will give them all the graces necessary for their state of life. 2. I will establish peace in their families. 3. I will console them in all their troubles. 4. They shall ind in My Heart an assured refuge during life and especially at the hour of death. 5. I will pour abundant blessings on all their undertakings. 6. Sinners shall ind in My Heart the source of an in inite ocean of mercy. 7. Tepid souls shall become fervent. 8. Fervent souls shall speedily rise to great perfection. 9. I will bless the homes in which an image of My Heart shall be exposed and honored. 10. I will give to priests the power of touching the most hardened hearts. 11. Those who propagate this devotion shall have their names written in My Heart, never to be effaced. 12. The all-powerful love of My Heart will grant to all those who shall receive Communion on the irst Friday of nine consecutive months, the grace of inal repentance; they shall not die under My displeasure, nor without receiving their Sacraments; My Heart shall be their assured refuge at that last hour.

Simbang Gabi literally means “evening or night mass.” In practice, it refers to the Philip-pine Catholic tradition of celebrating a “novena”, a series of nine Advent evening masses from Dec. 15 through Dec. 23, leading to Christmas Day. (In the Philippines, the dates are from Dec. 16-24 since Simbang Gabi is held in the early morning.) The Simbang Gabi originated from the Missa Aurea (Golden mass or Angel’s mass) tradition, introduced to the Philippines by the Spanish fri-ars at the start of the Catholic evangelization of the islands. In 1587, Friar Diego Soria petitioned Pope Sixtus V for permission to celebrate these Masses outdoors due to such massive crowds coming to worship. The request was granted through a recript, and in the 17th century, the Simbang Gabi or Misa de Gallo or Misa de Aguinaldo - as the practice is variously referred to by the Catholic populace in the Philippines - became a permanent fixture in the Philippine Catholic religious traditions. Originally (and still observed in most places in the Philippines), the Simbang Gabi Masses were held at the crack of dawn - at 4:00 or 5:00 am, when the roosters crowed to an-nounce the dawn of a new day, hence the name, Misa de Gallo (gallo=rooster), and when families of farmers and fishermen began or ended their day. Farmers began working in their fields early to avoid the intense heat, while the fishermen who spent all night at sea came home early to sell their catch. So, at the first sound of dawn, the local bands started playing traditional carols all over town and church bells pealed to summon everyone for the Simbang Gabi. Families would walk to the church passing by homes with lighted parol or lanterns fashioned out of bamboo and colored paper. In the darkness of the night, we sing with joyful longing for the coming of the Savior, the Light of the world. In the deadly darkness of sin, we hope eagerly for the coming of the Savior, the Life of the world. In Simbang Gabi, we join Mary and Joseph, all other saints, prophets, and the Christian faithful throughout history in joyfully welcoming the Savior who is the Light and the Life of the world.

On behalf of myself and St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, I'd like to express my gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. Nornbeck for their generosity in donating such a gorgeous grand piano for our church. This piano belonged to Mrs. Norbeck’s late brother, Rev. Richard M. Dodaro. Interestingly, I crossed paths with Rev. Dodaro over twenty years ago when he was the pastor at St Anthony and All Saints in Bridgeport, Illinois. I will always remember his vibrant and humble spirit and hold it dear in my heart. I would also like to express my gratitude to our dear parishioners who helped transport the grand piano to our church. YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS Happenings with/for our parish teens!

Middle Schoolers,

join us for COCOA and CAROLING!

WHEN: Wednesday, December 19, 2018 7:00-8:30 P.M. WHERE: Parish Office WHO: 6th, 7th & 8th Graders (YOU MUST BE ENROLLED IN Youth Ministry, see ‘how to’ next to this meeting notice.)

The St. Andrew Youth Ministry office has organized this fun activity especially for 6th-7th-8th Graders, be sure to join the chaos!!

Second Sunday of ADVENT - Advent, as we learned last week, is a special time of preparation that allows us to change our hearts and to make room for Jesus in our hearts and lives. On this second Sunday of Advent we hear the call to repent and to make straight the way of the Lord. Are you being nudged toward Confession? Find time! In what other CONCRETE ways are you changing how you live to make Christ more present in our world?

As today’s Gospel implies: I am the one who is asked to turn from my sins, to turn toward God and to prepare the way for him to make his home in my heart. Prayerfully consider, how am I doing at this?

“We need Catechists.” Hmmm, kind of a scary thought not knowing if I would be good enough to teach our young people about our faith and our Lord. It is a serious responsibility and after much thought decided to see if I was suited to be a Catechist. I never thought that I would enjoy the experience as much as I did. I was assigned 5th grade initially and was very apprehensive but said a prayer and jumped in. The students were so eager to learn about God and His love that I not only taught them but learned from them as well. I now am teaching 2nd graders and am thankful that St. Andrew’s Faith Formation has trusted and supported me with this important mission to teach students about our beautiful faith. Join the Faith Formation team and find that you will get more than you give. Our Catechist family welcomes you!! Ruby Lee, parishioner since 1966.
