The Society of St. Vincent

DePaul St. Andrew the Apostle Conference

neighbor helping neighbor… Our helpline 815-886-4165 ext. 304

In the Gospel today, Jesus shows us that we are to place Gospel values before any other values and to be willing to put our lives on the line for them. Taking care of God’s poor is indeed living Gospel values.

Our Mission: Briefly, The mission of the St. Vincent de Paul Society is that we are a group of lay men and women who join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to the needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Frederick Ozanam, and patron, St. Vincent de Paul as a reflection of the whole family of God. We are nourished by prayer and reflection, mutually supportive gatherings and adherence to a basic Rule (of purpose, structure and organization). We witness God’s love by embracing all works of charity and justice. This Society collaborates with other people of good will in relieving need and addressing it’s causes, making no distinction in those served, because in them Vincentians see the face of Christ. Do you desire to personally help the poor? Is God calling you to join the Society St. Vincent de Paul? Think, pray about it and then call our helpline to get more information at 815-886-4165 Ext. 304. It opens up a whole new world of value and friendship, helps us feel worthy of God’s love and are steps to eternal salvation. May the Holy Spirit guide your day!

VIVENDO NUESTRA FE

ST. ANDREW THE APOSTLE

PROJECT GABRIEL

Since 2010 Project Gabriel here at St. Andrew’s has had the privilege and joy of working with pregnant mothers who are in difficult situations. Our Lord in the past has entrusted these pregnant mothers and their unborn babies to us to reveal His Love and gentle care for them by walking with them, helping them where we can but mostly just letting them know that in the midst of their difficult situation, they need not be alone – we are willing to walk this difficult but joyful road with them. I say “joyful” because the life of each and every unborn baby is a gift from God and is a joy! This is where you, the beautiful parishioners of St. Andrew’s, come into the picture. If anyone knows of a pregnant mother in need, please, especially, if she is considering abortion, give her our phone number at St. Andrew’s and someone will give her a call back. No pregnant mother ever needs to feel she is alone – God always provides a loving hand to those who reach out to Him, and we would like to be that loving hand. Thank you for your allowing yourselves to be instruments in the Lord’s Hands by lovingly communicating to any pregnant mother you may know who is in a difficult situation that we do care and would consider it a joy to do what we can to help. We will accept all pregnant mothers providing they are within a reasonable distance which we can travel to. They need not be Catholic – they can be of other denominations or of no religion at all. Whatever their faith beliefs – or no faith belief – we will accept them. They can call Barb at St. Andrew’s at 815-886-4165, ext. 308 and leave their name and phone number. Within twenty four hours they will receive a call back. Thank you for your prayerful consideration of this. We need your help as we are all in this together. The lives of these precious little ones and also the lives of these pregnant mothers are counting on our loving help! May the Child Jesus in His Loving Mother’s arms, richly bless you and your loved ones!

WE CAN STILL USE NEW CATECHISTS!!! Read an inspiring story about a current one!

Hello, my name is Paula Irvine. I have been a parishioner of St. Andrew for 23 years and a catechist for 12 of those years. I answered God’s call to become a catechist when I saw the request for volunteers in our bulletin. I saw it three weeks in a row and realized that I needed to step up. Initially, I became a catechist to be involved in the faith formation of my own two sons. What I didn’t realize at the time was that it would mean so much to me and become so rewarding. My faith deepened when I shared my time and God given talents with the families and children I met, my fellow catechists became family and my heart and habits were changing.

God chose me, an imperfect child of His, to help spread His Word. If you are unsure as to whether or not you can help, YOU CAN!! Come with a friend or start as an aide helping in the classroom. Two nights a month could be just enough to help one or more of God’s children know Him better! CAN YOU HELP OUR FAITH FORMATION PROGRAM? Contact Annmarie for details.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The song of the angels, “Holy, Holy, Holy,” resounds from our lips at every Mass. There was a widespread belief in the first religions of the world that God stirred creation into being by a word, a song, a musical note. Music and a sense of God’s presence have always been inseparable. In the liturgy, your voice is invited into this song as the priest names the reasons for our praise. “Heaven and earth are full of your glory,” and we are not passive onlookers, but participants in this glory. Catholic prayer no longer assigns this angelic hymn to a choir, but gives it to you to sing. Even if your voice is thought to be suitable only for a well insulated shower stall, you are called into this song. We are born to sing—just listen to a baby testing the full range of newly discovered vocal abilities. Soon we get shushed and hushed into quiet, and given lots of messages that our voices are unwanted, and that we need to raise our hands in order to be heard. All of that is overturned in liturgy, the place where God waits to hear us come alive in the song of all creation. In heaven, everyone’s in the choir; why not start practicing now? —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Invest in Kids Scholarship Visit https://empowerillinois.org/students/how-do-i-apply/ for more details about the two-step application process. Current scholarship recipients and students who applied in 2018-19 and are currently on the waitlist must reapply. The Catholic Education Foundation(CEF) for the Dio-cese of Joliet distributes hundreds of need-based scholar-ships each year. Students K-12are eligible to apply for financial assistance to help cover the cost of tuition. You can apply athttps://online.factsmgt.com/signin/3D8S9. Anyone requesting financial assistance from the Catholic Education Foundation or from one of the St. Andrew Scholarships must fill out the application through the FACTS Grant and Aid Company. The Bartel Scholarship (grades 1-8) and the Malchow Scholarship (grades K-8) will be determined by the Facts application, and the Knights of Columbus Scholarship (PK-8) requires you to fill out their application.

The CEF scholarships from the Diocese of Joliet will be determined after the tax credit scholarships are granted. To be eligible for the local scholarships through St. An-drew School and the CEF scholarships, you must have a COMPLETED application updated on FACTS by March 1, 2019. The Knights of Columbus Scholarship must be turned in by April 15, 2019. The Knights of Columbus pa-perwork can be picked up in the school office.

The CEF also offers transfer grants for students who transfer in from a public school or a private school outside of the Diocese of Joliet. They offer $1,000 for the first year, and $500 for the second. Contact the school office if you have any questions. 815-886-5953 x420 or x421.

FUNERALS

Arrangements for a funeral are usually made through the Funeral Director at a funeral home of your choice.

PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK

Hospitals do not inform churches when parishioners are patients. You should ask an immediate family member to contact the Parish Office to request a visit from a priest when sickness occurs or death is imminent. Please contact Barb Sanders to arrange for Communion to be brought to the sick at home, to a hospital, or nursing home.

I would like to have my house blessed.

Please contact me to make arrangements.
