Reflection

The second encounter from John’s Gospel this Lent is with a man born blind. As with the Samaritan woman last week, we too are invited to know Jesus in an intimate way, this time as bestowing the sight to recognize him as the One sent by God. Our first reading foreshadows today’s Gospel by presenting the experience of the prophet Samuel, who comes to “see” David, the youngest son of Jesse, as the one God has chosen to replace King Saul, rather than the eldest son, Eliab, whom Samuel assumed would be God’s choice. Eliab, like Saul, is tall. “Don’t judge by appearances,” God chides. In the Gospel, we see once again a person’s gradual coming into the light that is Jesus, finally recognizing him as more than a prophet, as the Son of Man who is the Lord. For those of us who are baptized, seeing goes even further than recognizing Jesus as the Light of the world. As Ephesians proclaims, we who “were once darkness . . . now. . . are light in the Lord” (5:8) and should lead lives of goodness, righteousness, and truth. Are you a child of the light?

Readings

March 26, 2017

Fourth Sunday of Lent

1st Reading….1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a Psalm…….…....23:1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6 2nd Reading……..Ephesians 5:8-14 Gospel…...…..………..John 9:1-41 April 2, 2017

Fifth Sunday of Lent

1st Reading………Ezekiel 37:12-14 Psalm……….130:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 2nd Reading……….Romans 8:8-11 Gospel……...………..John 11:1-45

Dear Friends,

The healing of the man born blind: “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him… “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind.” – John 9:1-41

In his accounts of Jesus’ “signs,” John displays great skills as a

dramatist. His story of the healing of the man born blind is really a play with six scenes: the blind beggar’s healing with the mud Jesus mixes on the Sabbath; the townsfolk’s reaction to his cure; the beggar’s testimony before the Pharisees; the testimony of the blind man’s parents; the beggar’s second appearance before the Pharisees (resulting in his expulsion); the beggar’s return to Jesus.

John “stages” Jesus’ miracle to reveal the deeper meanings of

Jesus’ mission of redemption as the Messiah. The healing of the blind beggar heightens the tension between Jesus and the Pharisees. The teaching of this itinerant Rabbi threatens the structured and exalted life of the scribes and Pharisees. They seek to discredit Jesus any way they can – and this miracle gives them the opportunity. In using spittle, kneading clay and rubbing it on the man’s eyes, Jesus breaks the strict rules prohibiting any kind of manual labor on the Sabbath. The miracle itself becomes secondary; the issue becomes Jesus’ breaking of the Sabbath. Jesus’ teachings and healings so threaten the comfortably ordered lives of the Jewish leaders that they seek some way to discredit what he has done, so they condemn Jesus’ mixing of the mud as a clear violation of the Jewish prohibition of any kind of work on the Sabbath.

The inquisition of the blind man and his parents and his expulsion

from the temple are important parts of Jesus’ story for the evangelist and his readers. John and his community of Jewish-Christians are experiencing the same rejection: many of them have been expelled from their synagogues and the temple for their belief in Jesus as the Messiah.

Our faith, our embracing of the Spirit of God, demands that we see

things not with the eyes of practicality, self-interest and profitability alone, but with the eyes of Christ’s selflessness and humility: to see beyond appearances and superficialities and look deeper to discover the timeless and profound truths of the human heart. To see the world in the light of Christ empowers us to re-create our world, to shatter the darkness of injustice and hate with the light of justice and compassion.

St. Andrew, pray for us.

Sincerely in Christ,

Annual Spring Clean-Up

Lighthouse Shelter Ministry

On the first Friday of each month, St. Andrew parishioners prepare, deliver and serve dinner to 40-50 residents of the Light House Shelter in Annapolis. Anyone interested in this ministry, please contact Pat Ruck at 410-571-5521. The next dinner takes place this coming Friday, April 7.

Physician Assisted Suicide Bill Withdrawn

Thanks to all who prayed, contacted their legislators, attended the Catholics in Maryland Lobby Night, testified and attended the hearing to help defeat the Physician Assisted Suicide Bill, (HB370) and Senate Bill (SB354). Your prayers and action helped to defeat this bill for the third straight year, and in doing so helped protect our vulnerable elderly, sick and disabled! Even so, we need to be vigilant and realize those who seek a ‘culture of death’ will bring the physician assisted suicide bill up again in the 2018 General Assembly. To keep abreast of this issue, visit www.stopassistedsuicidemd.org.

40 Days for Life

The Spring 40 Days for Life Campaign began on Ash Wednesday and will continue until Sunday, April 9. We have not registered to participate in the National Campaign, however, you are still encouraged to pray and fast during these 40 days for an end to abortion, to protect the moms who go into the abortion facilities, for the closing of the facilities, as well as the conversion of the abortionists and all those involved with abortions. You can also join in the peaceful prayer vigil on Tuesdays and Saturdays (the days that abortions take place) from 9:00am to 4:00pm at the Planned Parenthood located at 929 West St. in Annapolis. For more information, please contact Maureen Stansell at [email protected] or 410-353-2910.
