FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER: When Jesus heard about the illness of His friend, Lazarus, He responded, “This illness is not to end in death; rather it is for God’s glory, that through it the Son of God may be glorified.” Every aspect of our lives — our gifts as well as our sufferings — can, if surrendered to Christ, lead to blessing for others and ourselves. - John 11:4

THE WAY - Today we sense the apostles' trepidation as they begin to realize that the Lord would soon be leaving them. In their fear, they ask, "Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?" (John 14:5). Jesus tells them that He is the way. The Easter season has been a time of growing in Easter faith so that we, too, may learn to know that Jesus is the way. We can take comfort in the Lord's promise that He is going to His Father's house to prepare a place for us, His chosen people who have been called out of darkness into God's wonderful light. As the paschal candle continues to burn during this holy season, let us remember that in baptism we were given the light of Christ. With Christ our light as the beacon lighting our way, let us march toward the glory of Pentecost. (c) Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

To Receive Holy Communion (For those who are sick, hospitalized, or home bound). Please call Gloria Bowen, Eucharistic Minister to the sick at 310-670-5971. The Family Visitation Ministry offers spiritual support to those in need. Please call Sr. Teresita @ 310.216.2001, or the Church Office @ 310.670.2243.

FOCUS: We are called to the difficult work of discipleship, to be both hearers and doers of the Word. In and through our Baptism, we were given new life in Christ and became members of the Body of Christ—the Church. As such, each of us is called to holiness, and to use our unique gifts and talents to further the work and mission of the Church. We are also called to use these gifts to help build up God’s kingdom on earth, and lead lives which give glory to God.

LITURGY OF THE WORD:

The reading from Acts tells of the Apostles ordaining seven men as deacons to help ensure the needs of those in the early Church were being served as the Church continued to grow and develop. The second reading uses Hebrew Scripture to illustrate that Christ is the foundation of the Church, and His followers are living stones - a holy people. In the Gospel, Jesus says that He is the way and the truth and the life.

Reflections on Today’s Readings:

Ministry in Community…

What’s the right age? Many parents find it difficult to determine what responsibilities

and privileges are appropriate for children at different ages. Assessing these issues can be complicated further when considering safety concerns, such as how old a child should be to be allowed to use public restrooms alone. Balancing the child’s emerging independence with possible risks, such as a predator near the restrooms, can be challenging. Whatever the situation, parents can make sure their children are informed about safety concerns and strategies, while they themselves remain vigilant. To request a copy of the VIRTUS© online article “When are Children Old Enough to…?” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

...whoever believes in me will do the works that I do… John 14:12

When you think of Jesus’ good works, what’s the first one you think of? Healing the blind man? Feeding the crowd with a few loaves and fish? Raising Lazarus from the dead? Jesus does these things to show He is the Son of God. But behind these works is Jesus’ great love. When Jesus says those who believe in Him will be able to do His great works, He isn’t just talking about the apostles. He’s talking about us. When we believe in Jesus and let Jesus’ love fill our hearts, we can do anything in Jesus’ name. We really can!

Jesus, Bless all those who do your work today!

Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith…

FACT OF LIFE Pro-life leaders praise defunding

of U.N. Population Fund "According to an AP report, the $32.5 million the U.S. is withdrawing from the U.N. Population Fund, known as UNFPA, will instead go to the U.S. Agency for In-ternational Development for maternal health and non-abortion reproductive health programs and ef-forts to end practices such as genital mutilation. 'In China, government officials continue to subject women and their families to crushing fines and em-ployment sanctions, and even destroy their homes, for becoming pregnant without government permis-sion,' said in an April 4 statement by Jennifer Popik, legislative director for National Right to Life. 'U.S. law prohibits funding an agency that in any way partici-pates in such a coercive program.'"

Holy Land Handicrafts Co. Holy Land Handicrafts Co. Holy Land Handicrafts Co. Next week, we welcome with us representatives of the Christian Catholic families in the Holy Land and Jerusalem. As many of you know, with the war going on in that region, many families have lost their jobs and are now unable to support their families. So for a living they have started carving olive wood to sell to tourist who come to the Holy Land. However in recent times, the amount of tourists heading to the Holy Land has declined due to the wall that was built to surround Bethlehem. Also because of the discrimination in politics is has gotten much harder for them to market these carvings. With that, many of these Christians have found it easier to flee and start a new life somewhere else. And their numbers have now decreased from 60% to less than 2%. So instead we have invited them to bring their olive wood form the Holy Land here in the hope of supporting these families and providing them with food for them and their children. All the funds made here today will go directly to these families and their children. So please if you can, find it somewhere in your hearts to stop by our display and see how you can help them. Thank you and God bless.
