Dear Friends in Christ:

I was recently reminded about the book "Monsignor Quixote," written by the great Catholic author Graham Greene. It tells a wonderful story about friendship and faith. The story is set in Spain, and it explores the relationship between the local parish priest and the town mayor (who is a nonbeliever and atheist). One day they decide to leave the small village and go on a journey together; and as they travel the conversation inevitably turns to the topic of religion and faith.

Early in the book there is a scene where the two friends are sitting on a hillside enjoying a flask of wine, and the mayor says to the priest: "What puzzles me, friend, is how you can believe in so many incompatible ideas, for example, the Trinity. It's worse than higher mathematics! Can you explain the Trinity to me?" The priest pauses to think for a while, and then replies. He explains that the wine they'd been drinking had actually come from a number of different bottles. The first bottle could represent God the Father and the second bottle God the Son. Although in different bottles, the wine they contain is of the same substance and came from the same batch; they were "born" at the same time, as it were. The third bottle, the priest further explained, could represent the Holy Spirit, and is the one that brings "the extra spark of life!" So, the priest concludes, although they are from three different bottles, the wine in each is inseparable; it shares one and the same substance and is of the same vintage. "Whoever partakes of one partakes of all three," he says.

As we celebrate Trinity Sunday this weekend, we are challenged to reflect on the very essence of God who "is." It's Jesus, of course, who reveals that God is our heavenly Father, and that His

Father is also our Father. It's Jesus who reveals that He is God's Son, and that we are His

brothers and sisters. And it's Jesus who promises to send the Holy Spirit as our comforter and guide. In other words, it's Jesus who teaches us and shows us the truth about God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (the Trinity), which is a Truth that we can never fully grasp by our human intellect and reason alone.

Of course, we certainly need and want some sort of intellectual understanding of the articles of our Catholic faith, like the Trinity, and different analogies and images can help, whether it's the example from "Monsignor Quixote" or the threeleafed shamrock which St. Patrick so famously used. That being said, however, the socalled "mystery" of the Trinity is not a "problem" that needs to be intellectually solved; it is an experience of faith which we are called to "enter into" and encounter. And we do

that by simply allowing ourselves to be loved by

our God who "is" Love! By opening our hearts to the living and active love of the Holy Spirit we are drawn into the loving relationship that exists between the Father and Christ the Son. And as we partake of the very life and love of the Trinity ourselves, others are then able to encounter the Trinitarian love of God through us. What a joy and a privilege it is for us to be instruments of that love!

In our Trinitarian Lord,

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is hosting its annual

BABY SHOWER Throughout the month of May

Once again, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be having a month long baby shower during the month of May. The items collected will benefit our Friends in Need, Catholic Charities and Informed Choices, a group that helps young pregnant women in need. A playpen will be in the narthex area throughout the month waiting to be filled with all kinds of baby items.

We are in need of an assortment of baby supplies and new clothing for newborns through age 1 ½.

Please help us fill the playpen with diapers, diaper bags, blankets, baby bottles, clothes, bath items, bedding and toys for our families in need.

We thank you for your continued support of our ministry to serve our Friends in Need here in our community.

CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION Sunday, June 3rd, following the 12:00 PM Mass

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is the Church’s annual celebration of what was formerly known as the Solemnity of “Corpus Christi.” It is a beautiful tradition of our Catholic faith to hold a Eucharistic Procession on that day. You are all invited to join our procession on June 3rd at the conclusion of the 12:00 Noon Mass. All 1st Communicants are encouraged to join us wearing their 1st Communion outfits. We will process through the Church, and then outside on our property around the outskirts of the parking lot, before concluding back in the Church with Benediction. (In the case of rain, we will, of course, simply process through the Church.) Such processions are a beautiful way to witness to the world about the importance of the Eucharist in our lives; and by following the Blessed Sacrament in procession, we make a strong statement about where our faith lies and about whom we follow…Jesus Christ! Those who do not feel that they will be able to walk the distance of the procession are invited to simply remain in the church in prayer until the procession returns. And those who are unable to stay for the procession after Mass will be given time to exit the parking lot before the procession begins. Unlike other areas of the world, we are blessed to be able to make such public statements about our faith; so join us for one of the most inspiring devotions of our Catholic heritage, and deepen your love for Jesus Christ in the Eucharist!

RESPECT LIFE CORNER THE SLIPPERY SLOPE

Nine countries have legalized euthanasia or assisted suicide. These countries are the Netherlands, Belgium, Colombia, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Albania and six states in the US as well as the District of Columbia. (Washington, Oregon, Vermont, New Mexico, Montana and Hawaii in 1/2019)

As Catholics, we need to be aware of and fight against the slippery slope of euthanasia. In 2002, the Netherlands made euthanasia legal after looking the other way since the 1970s. When euthanasia was first legalized it was for killing the terminally ill and those suffering from chronic diseases.

It was initially for physical illness and now includes psychological afflictions. The slope has descended from voluntary euthanasia to involuntary killing. Another heart wrenching example of the slippery slope is in Belgium. It started with supposedly tightly defined parameters in 2002 to the present where it's now legal to kill someone who is simply “tired of life”.The “Catechism of the Catholic Church” teaches “it is morally unacceptable to put an end to the lives of any handicapped, sick or dying person. An act or omission which causes death in order to eliminate suffering constitutes a murder gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and the respect due to the living God, his creator.”

Let us pray for the grace to unite any suffering we might experience in our lives to the suffering Christ endured for our salvation in His passion, death and resurrection. The 8:00 am Mass on Thursday, May 31st (the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary) and the 6:00 PM Adoration hour on Sundays during the month of May will be for these intentions.

FAMILY BARBECUE & CONCERT

As the school year wraps up and we get ready to move into summer, join us Saturday, June 2nd, for a night of live music, great food, games for all ages, and a chance to connect with more people from the parish. All are welcome, so bring the whole family, invite your neighbors, and come for a great night!

VOCATIONS CORNER

GOD CALLS BY NAME

Our name is something so important that when God calls, he does it by our name. We are so special that we are not called in a generic or group way, but we are called individually, personally.

Our name is given by our parents because they have given us life. When we say our full name, we want to express who we are and where we come from. By saying "I am Gerardo Gomez," I am saying that my parents decided to give me that name, and that I belong to the Gomez family. And if I want to be more specific I could include my first name, and my maternal surname to indicate more specifically where I come from and who I am.

When I arrived in this country, Father Lavan asked me two questions: “What is your name?” and “How do you want us to call you?” The first question was easy, I told him my name is Manuel Gerardo Gomez Reza; but the second question was more complicated to answer. Even though I was 26 years old, I was never asked before “How do you want us to call you?” I answered, “I have two names and two surnames, call me as you wish, or make the best combination out of them.” Father Lavan answered, “I'm going to call you 'Manny',” and from that moment on, I've been Manny.

There is something interesting and important that each culture contributes to a better understanding of what our name represents. In the Hispanic culture Mom and Dad give you a name, but when you grow up friends or family give you some nickname, or some way to identify you, that they will use for the rest of your life. In the culture of this country also Mom and Dad give you a name at birth, but when you have the use of reason you can say how you want to be called.

So, we discover, the name as something that we receive, but also as something that we decided to be, something that we embrace.

Something similar happens with our vocation, God calls us by our name and gives us a mission in life, but he

respects our freedom. It is precisely in that freedom that we can choose to be what God wants from us or something

different that may not lead us to happiness.
