Dear Parishioners,

To better understand the link between our three

readings today, the 31st Sunday in Ordinary time, we should

begin with our Gospel reading and then return to our other 2

readings. In the Gospel reading from Luke we meet

Zaccheus, a Jewish tax collector who longs to see Jesus. He

had heard about Jesus and was very curious to see what he is

all about. Zaccheus is very short and would never be able to

see Jesus above the crowd so he climbs a tree to get a better

look. Zaccheus was smart in not trying to run ahead of the

crowd because he is a tax collector and despised by so many

people. His safety could have been in question. Jesus stops

by the tree and calls the tax collector to come down and

goes home with Zaccheus to have dinner with him. The

most important point here is that Jesus will go out of his

way to find all who are searching for him. All we need to

do is open our minds and hearts and invite him in. In our

first reading from Wisdom we hear that God is mindful and

cares for the least of his creation and extends mercy to

all. Everything in existence comes from God and has a

purpose in life even those pesky bugs and the weeds and

dandelions that grow in our gardens. Our second reading

reminds us to be like Zaccheus and run ahead to find Jesus

in our daily lives and not just on Sunday when we go to

church.

Step back and let us look at today’s world – all

around us is violence, hatred, meanness and people suffering

from hunger and loss from many major disasters. When we

encounter this we need to remember that Jesus’ mission

becomes ours: to seek and save the lost. We can only do

that one day at a time. The Prayer of Saint Francis comes to

my mind and brings the message out clearly.

“Lord make me an instrument of Your peace, where there is

hatred, let me sow love: where there is injury, pardon; where

there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where

there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.

O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be

consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to

be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive; it is in

pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are

born to eternal life.”

Peace!

Sister Justine

October , 2016 Dear Parishioner, Thank you, Thank you. Thank you. Today we present for your perusal our Financial Report for the fiscal year which ended on June 30, 2016. The spiraling cost increases in medical benefits, utility expenses and on-going preventive maintenance on our aging buildings has far outpaced the inflation rate in our area. We have managed to meet most of our normal operating expenses. We are behind on our archdiocesan assessments. The annual cost to operate St. Aloysius Parish is over $1.2 million. Our envelope users and those who use Faith Direct - electronic giving - are the major parish support. Church support is incredibly important to keep a parish healthy and growing. It takes money to run a parish. You can’t turn on the lights, heat the buildings or provide programs without it. We must pay our parish staff. Giving is also important as a part of discipleship - our following Jesus. There is an important spiritual value to church giving. The Bible, and especially the Gospels, are strong on sharing and responsibility. I cannot begin to thank you enough for your love of St. Aloysius Parish - reflecting your love of God. May our good Lord bless you abundantly.

Sincerely in Christ, Msgr. Michael J. Desmond Pastor
