POPE FRANCIS—PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR MARCH

Evangelization: Formation in Spiritual Discernment That the Church may appreciate the urgency of formation in spiritual discernment, both on the personal and communitarian levels.

Pastor’s Corner

What a retreat! More than 250 people attended and almost 100 were from our

parish! I am going to spend a while unpacking it! If you didn’t hear, last weekend, God

manifested His Power and Love in a BIG way right here at St. Alice. It was nothing short

of a new Pentecost! As I talk to people about their experience, I have heard mention of

every kind of spiritual gift found in the Acts of the Apostles and the letter to the

Corinthians: prophecy, healing, miracles, words of knowledge etc. What was probably the

most amazing part of the weekend, was that most of the healings came about, not

primarily through the retreat team, but from the participants praying with each other! Many St. Alice

parishioners have told me how they experienced the power and love of God released in their life when they prayed

for other people, and how God answered their simple prayers for others when they asked for physical healings for

them. Many parishioners experienced physical healings, from arthritis in the hands and knees, to scoliosis, to

neuropathy, and many others that simply haven’t shared their stories with me yet! Many others experienced deep

emotional healing of traumatic memories, chronic shame, self-loathing, depression, and one even received complete

healing of deep-seated homosexual desire! It was simply a powerful revelation of God’s merciful love for His

children—and it happened right here in our Church in 2018—God is alive and He loves us!

It was also a manifestation of the hierarchical and charismatic nature of the Church. The charisms, or ‘gifts’

of the Spirit, and the authority structures of the Church were working hand in hand exactly in the way the Second

Vatican council envisioned. The event was blessed by the bishop beforehand, officiated by me with the help of

brother priests and deacons, organized and run by a team of the laity, with everyone using their proper gifts—and

the gifts of healing, miracles, prophecy, words of knowledge, and discernment were being used by everyone, laity

and priests together, to build up our faith as one family! There was no competition, no sense of ‘my gifts’ or ‘I’m in

charge’, but everyone humbly submitting to one another out of love, and respecting the institutional authority of

the priests so that God’s blessing could flow freely and all the spiritual gifts could be ordered properly. In short, the

body of Christ was working together as one under Christ the head! And it was amazing to experience! When the

body is united, the members are made whole! The retreat was called ‘healing the whole person’—and it was not just

about the individual, but about healing the whole body, the Church! How much this work is needed to continue!

When God does so much in a short time, the risk is simply moving on without acknowledging or thanking God

enough. I am asking all those who attended to please submit your stories, electronically if possible, of what God did

for you. When you share what God did for you, you are exercising your baptismal call to evangelize. Our parish

and our community needs your witness! When we have the stories compiled, we will have a living document of

‘glory reports’ that people can read when they doubt God’s goodness or if God really cares about us today. The

answer is a resounding YES!

If you ‘missed out’ or regret not going, don’t worry--this is just the beginning. God has started something that will

continue to grow. When people begin living into the graces of their baptism and confirmation, manifestations of

God’s love become an ordinary part of life. And why not? We become ‘other Christs’ in Baptism and are anointed

with the same Spirit in confirmation. Jesus said, “Truly, Truly, I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works

that I have done, and even greater than these…Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be

glorified in the Son; if you ask anything in my name, I will do it.” (John 14:12ff)

Love, Fr. Mark

ST. ALICE CONFERENCE OF

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

St. Alice Conference of St. Vincent de Paul is

searching for members who are interested in serving

the poor of Springfield. Requirements are a humble

and giving spirit or at least willing to acquire

one. Meetings are the first Sunday of the month

at 11:00 for about an hour. Members make about 2-3

home visits/month which takes about 1-2

hours. Contact Diane Soik at 541-731-7860.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

FIRST PLACE FAMILY INITIATIVE

Our Parish will participate in the St. Vincent de Paul

First Place Family Initiative. The night shelter will take

place here at St Alice from April 16 through April 23rd.

This program has been operating for some years and

St. Alice has and will continue to do our part along with

other congregations of different faiths in Lane County

to provide shelter, meals and peace of mind to

homeless families with children.

This is an important, highly visible and vital activity,

and, of course, there are many volunteer opportunities

for our parishioners and groups. So many here have

participated in this effort, but all are welcome and

needed to make this a special week for our guests

from First Place. We need people to prepare and

serve meals, drive vans, donate food and cash

donations for supplies.

There will be sign up sheets in the vestibule for the

next few weeks. Menus are suggested on the forms

but feel free to make changes or do your own thing.

Plan for around 25 people.

Contact Alex Walker at 541-868-7653 with questions,

suggestions or to volunteer.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE

From February 14 through March 25, you’re invited to join

other Christians for 40 Days for Life – 40 days of prayer and

fasting for an end to abortion. We need more volunteers to

stand and peacefully pray during a 40-day vigil in the public

right-of-way outside the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic

at 3579 Franklin Blvd., Eugene, Oregon 97403 (Glenwood

area). If you’d like more information, please contact: Eileen

at [email protected] or 541-543-7168 or our Website

page 40DaysforLife.com/Eugene. We are also having a mid

-point rally with Father Theodore Lange on Saturday, March

10th at 10:00 a.m. at Planned Parenthood. Please join

us. Thanks!

ENCOUNTER SAFIATA

In Burkina Faso, we encounter Safiata, a mother, grandmother and farmer who relies on the money she makes from her crops to put her children through school. How can our purchases this Lent support farmers and artisans? How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities? CALL-IN DAY TO CONGRESS

Please participate in the U.S. Catholic Bishops' “Call-in

Your support is critical to help prevent the deportation

of the nearly 1.8 million young people, known as

children and have known no other home than the

USA. They may face deportation as soon as March 6,

unless Congress reaches a bi-partisan deal to protect

them. (Watch a 30-second video at

https://tinyurl.com/yawrbcrx)

You can reach your congressional representative's

Washington, DC or local office by using the

phone numbers in the attachment.

If you're not sure who your Member of Congress is, go

to http://www.house.gov and enter your Zip Code.

In speaking to your representative’s office please

communicate in your own words the following

message:

• “I urge you to support a bipartisan, common-sense,

and humane solution for Dreamers:”

• “Protect Dreamers from deportation and provide

them with a path to citizenship.”
