e time has come, the day is here, the eek shall inherit… Servus Place.

Saturday and Sunday, St. Albert’s original pop culture festival Eek Fest returns for its second year and, as a certain hockey announcer would say, “Oh, Baby!”, what a dierence a year can make.

e show has doubled in size and lls four of the oor spaces in Servus Place. One oor space is dedicated for Alberta’s rst major Lego fan extravaganza called Northern Bricks. A second oor space is lled with a main performance stage, celebrity autograph and photo areas and a special zombie shooting range with foam guns. e remaining two oors are packed with local artists, exhibitors and special video and board game play areas. e show has sold out its oor space and

promises a range of interactive games and fun for all pop culture fans, big and small, says Rob LeLacheur, Eek Fest general manager.

“We’ve been working on these plans since last year, and we’re really happy with how it’s all come together. We know geeks, nerds, fan boys and girls and everyone in between is going to nd a unique event with Eek,” said LeLacheur. “We’ve designed the event with families in mind, and there are plenty of activities to keep everyone active.”

Two celebrity guests this year will attract fans of the small screen superheroes. Saturday will feature actress Caity Lotz from the TV shows Arrow and the newly announced Legends of Tomorrow, which will debut later this year. Lotz plays the White Canary in the new team-based show that will see her and a team of other

heroes and villains

joining forces to stop

an immortal villain named Vandal Savage.

e second guest on Sunday is Adrian Pasdar, best known for his role as a reluctant hero in the TV show Heroes. He is also a recurring character in the current Marvel show Agents of Shield. Pasdar has a long list of credits, including multiple voice-actor roles for animated super-hero shows. Both he and Lotz will be available for photographs and autographs at specic times on their respective days.

e other big addition this year is the Eek Fest Animation Festival, presented with the NorthWest Fest (formally Global Visions Film Festival). at event features animated short lms

submitted from around the world. Each short lm will

be screened twice over the weekend on the

giant screen in the main performance hall. Saturday night will feature a special screening of the Academy-Award-

nominated animation lm e Tale of e

Princess Kaguya from Japan. Sunday morning

will feature a special two-hour screening of older cartoon shows from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s along with cereal snacks for all attendees.

“I think the Sunday morning cereal and cartoons will be a great

way for families to connect over some fun TV shows that parents may remember from their own childhood,” said LeLacheur.

Eek Fest will also feature a costume contest for adults and children and multiple panel presentations throughout the two days on multiple topics. Attendees to the event will include several artists currently drawing for Image Comics; American artist Joe Wos, known for his inventive maze drawings; and local mural artist, Lewis Lavoie.

In the last instalment of a five-part series, the Leader looks for ways to get teens talking and explores a new plan for a youth centre in St. Albert.

Awkward conversations: Finding the right words and the right place

It’s Friday at dinnertime, and Tristan, Markus and Jessica are hanging out at the food court in St. Albert Centre. It’s not their rst choice.

e teens would rather be playing video games or pool at the youth drop-in centre that used to operate out of Grandin Park Plaza. But that closed nearly two years ago, when they were in junior high.

“I liked it because it was a place where teens could go that wasn’t the library, so we didn’t have to be quiet,” Tristan Murray, 16, says with a laugh.

His friend Markus Kluyts, 16, adds, “It had almost a comfy feel to it, like it’s somewhere I could go and just be myself.”

A safe place to go. It’s an idea that has come up now and again during the last ve weeks, as the Leader talks to teens in our series “Awkward Conversations”. We’ve explored the issues of depression, alcohol, drugs and test anxiety, and to wrap up, we’re looking at how best to communicate with teens and support them in our

community. Start young. Talk oen. Don’t be afraid

to tackle heavy topics. Know your kids’ friends. Get involved at their school. We’ve heard this advice from school counsellors, addiction and mental health specialists, RCMP ocers and youth workers.

It seems obvious, and yet we know we’re falling down.

A survey in September 2013 showed that only 45 per cent of students in grades 7 to 11 in St. Albert felt they had positive communication with their parents, and were willing to seek their advice. e older the student, the worse the communication. Among grade 7 students, 57 per cent reported positive communication; that dropped to 35 per cent of grade 11 students.

e survey, conducted for the city by

Search Institute, is called “Proles of Student Life: Attitudes and Behaviors”, and involved more than 3600 students from both public and Catholic schools.

Denise Belley, the counsellor at St. Albert Catholic High School, says it really does come down to carving out sacred time with your kids, and making it non-negotiable. One meal a week where everyone shows up. A regular family movie or game night. Time to talk, whether the topics are awkward or everyday chitchat.

en there’s another key: keeping your kid busy.

“How do we keep our youth engaged in healthy activities so that they don’t stray to make some unhealthy choices? ey do reach a point sometimes, ‘So now what? If I’m not into sports, do I go to movies? How many movies do I go to?’”

Belley says there are teens whose families just can’t aord aer-school activities. en there are teens who decide to quit, saying they’ve lost interest or need more time to study.

“I nd when they come to high school, they’ve been very involved, whether it’s sports or dance or whatever, and they suddenly say ‘I’m dropping it’. at’s the time when they need to sustain it, maybe not at the same level. But they need something to go to.”

at could be a sport, drama, music, art or caring for a pet, says Belley. Camping outdoors. Or camping on a couch at the drop-in youth centre.

e teens at the food court remember the centre as “a safe haven” for young people who might otherwise have been drinking, doing drugs or vandalizing the city.

“I feel like it probably kept a lot of people o the streets,” says Markus.

“Instead of going to Lions Park to have a few beers and a smoke, you go to the YC (youth centre) and play on the Xbox,” the Paul Kane student says.

everywhere else in St. Albert safer for everyone else,” adds Jessica Lemesurier, a 15-year-old student at Bellerose Composite High School.

The youth centre’s closure was tied to money problems, including a rental disagreement with its landlord and the loss of a government grant. After it closed, the city began developing a policy for youth programming and now has a vision for a new kind of centre.

The one-stop hub would bring together youth-related services under one roof,

says Linda Knoblauch, a community development coordinator with the city’s Family and Community Support Services. Young people could go there for everything from help with filling out university applications to making an appointment with a mental health counsellor.

“It’s the concept that it is truly one door. It’s always the right door,” Knoblauch says.

But this door won’t lead to a drop-in centre. And that’s a shame, say the teens.

“I think one of the best parts about

the YC was how informal it was,” says Tristan. “I feel like a hub like that would be really formal, and it would be like an office, almost.”

Says Jessica, “If it’s not a place where you can go with your friends and distract yourself, it’s not going to be as effective as it was before.”

Still, they welcome any place that helps teens, and agree with the city’s goal of a central location so young people can walk to it. Knoblauch says with the hub’s partners already on side, now it’s a matter of finding a suitable and affordable space.

Just one more hurdle in the quest to talk to – and support – our youth.

A s I walked out of Council chambers and saw all the

tents being set up for the International Children’s Festival, it reminded me of how fortunate I am to live and work in this energetic city. is time of year is lled with excitement and enthusiasm for our community and the events it holds.

e past weekend saw St. Albert come to life in many ways. From record teams in the Road Rage Street hockey tournament to the packed rodeo stands, there was something for everyone to participate in. And all the smiling faces I saw while handing out candy at the Rainmaker Rodeo Parade warmed my heart.

St. Albert is privileged to have great volunteers that want to build community. e Kinsmen have delivered this amazing event for 50 years. at is true dedication. And this year we will see the new Seven Music Festival and its countless volunteers bring a new and vibrant cultural event to life.

At Monday’s council meeting, we continued to see the importance of the event stimulus fund. I truly believe we made the right decision to invest and support new projects that will continue

to be economic drivers for our community. e Shine Lifestyle and Yoga Festival, the latest successful applicant, will be building on their success at the rst event, and I look forward to seeing them grow.

ese events just don’t happen. ey need many hands working together to see their vision come to life. And this is the same for Council.

As I have heard from many residents, Council needs to learn from these groups to do a better job of collaborating and cooperating. I completely agree. We all bring many talents and attributes into chambers, and more emphasis needs to be placed on growing our city. We must move on and leave our personal biases at the door.

In the coming weeks, we will be electing a new councillor. I look forward to working with the successful candidate to build a healthy, cooperative team that will represent the diverse needs of our residents.

Moving forward, I challenge all St. Albert residents to partake in at least one of the many events happening in this city. I know I will be visiting the Botanical Gardens, e Art Walk, the Farmer’s Market, the food trucks at the grain elevators, a few block parties…. Our city oers so much that every day will be a new adventure. I hope to see you on the trails of Red Willow Park.

And I know I certainly can’t wait to get my EEK! on this weekend.

It hurts a lot. It hurts more than I can describe in words, but I’ll give it a try.

Today is the last issue of the St. Albert Leader. e rst edition was October 20th, 2011, and we managed to produce every week since—190 editions.

Some editions were pretty good, some were not... but we always worked hard to not only do our best, but to be dierent while doing so.

When you put everything you have into making something a success and it is not, you take it pretty personally. is did not turn out as I had planned or hoped, but the closure is mine to own. It does make it more dicult because we have a very public product.

Our industry has experienced many major changes and challenges. e combination of recent mergers of media companies and how it will aect our supply chain, and the declines in print advertising, have forced me to make a decision I didn’t want to make, but one that is the best to make when looking ahead.

Unfortunately, there is not much room for a small independently owned newspaper these days, especially in a major metro market.

During our time, we ran on three core pillars: Be fun, informative and a community leader. Everything we did was held to that, and most times, I think we did a pretty good job with it.

I’m thankful we had this opportunity to work in and share the photos and stories of our community. We have a great city and one we proudly call home.

My sincere thanks to all of the community folks who worked with us and supported us throughout our time here. It was a pleasure working with you.

Above all else, I’m thankful to the Leader team for all of their hard work and dedication. One thing that hurts most about this decision is that it aects those around me in a negative way. I’m forever thankful to the team we had; they’re a great bunch of people and I wish them much success in the future.

New chapters and doors will open for us all, I’m sure. Everything happens for a reason, they say. I remain a fan and supporter of newspapers and I am hopeful they retain their important place in the community for a long time to come.

Air quality alertSUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – Smoke from Alberta wildfires has triggered an Edmonton area air quality alert.

Air quality is expected to be variable across much of the Edmonton Zone of Alberta Health Services (AHS) over the coming days, and potentially, weeks, says the province.

AHS is issuing a precautionary air quality advisory for the capital region.

Residents and visitors to the area are advised to be aware of air conditions and take precautions against potential health concerns that can be associated with smoky air conditions.

Although minor smoke conditions do not typically cause health concerns in healthy individuals, if smoke conditions become more severe, even healthy individuals may experience temporary irritation of eyes and throat, and possibly shortness of breath, says AHS.

If you can taste and/or smell smoke in the air:

- Monitor your symptoms.- Minimize physical activity outdoors.- Remain indoors with windows, doors

and air circulation fans/vents closed.- If you drive to another location, keep

windows and vents closed. Run your car fan on re-circulate mode to avoid

drawing in outdoor air.Individuals with respiratory

conditions (such as COPD and asthma), and individuals with existing cardiovascular conditions (such as angina, previous heart attack and congestive heart failure), may notice a worsening of symptoms in smoky air conditions. These individuals should monitor for worsening of symptoms and take the precautions routinely recommended by their physicians if a worsening of symptoms occurs.

Individuals experiencing symptoms can also call Health Link Alberta 24 hours a day, seven days a week, toll-free at 1.866.408.LINKCall: 1.866.408.LINK (5465), to speak to a registered nurse.

Joining the festivities at Eek Fest is Joe Wos from Pittsburgh, PA who is a cartoonist, storyteller, writer, and performer.

Over the past 30 years he has found unique ways to combine his cartooning skills with other art forms. It all results in a blend of storytelling and live cartoon illustrations which he showcases nationwide for schools, festivals, libraries and events.

His hand drawn illustrated mazes have been dubbed both the world’s largest and world’s most difficult. He is also a visiting resident cartoonist of the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, California and is also the founder and former executive director of the ToonSeum, Pittsburgh’s museum of comic and cartoon art.

He’ll be bringing along a 35’ maze that attendees will have an opportunity to try. As well, he’ll be doing two of his live performances over the weekend on the main stage. Tickets are available at www.theeek.com and the show runs May 30/31 at Servus Place.

Last week we talked about developing a great business idea. Inspiration can come from anywhere. Developing a clever solution for a problem you come across in your daily life or taking on a franchise can be a great way to build your rst business. But not every problem solving idea or new franchise can become a viable business.

Many business planning books or online tools will encourage you to develop a prototype of your invention. In many cases, this can cost tens of thousands of

dollars. at’s money spent on something that might have no customers! We recommend doing some serious market research rst.

Don’t spend any more money on your business idea until you’re able to answer these key questions about your business viability, adapted from Wendy Kennedy’s “So What? Who Cares? Why You?” program:

What’s your exact idea? Can you explain the jist of it in one sentence, or give a succinct elevator pitch in 30 seconds or less? Customers have short attention spans, and if the product or service is too

complicated, they’ll stop listening.Where does your idea t in the

marketplace? No matter how unique you think your invention might be, you’ll still have competitors. Figure out who the competition is, how much of a threat they are, and why customers would want to buy your product instead of theirs.

Who is your customer? I spoke to an app developer at a conference last year. His newest app idea was developed to target Whyte Ave patrons between the hours of 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. Talk about a niche market! Find out if there are enough people who will want to buy what you’re selling.

Who’s on your team? A great idea won’t go anywhere without a great team, even if it is potentially viable. If you plan to grow the business, make sure you have key partners in place for distribution, operations, marketing, sales, and human resources.
