JUST A THOUGHT

Dear Friends,

Last month we were anticipating re-opening our churches - this month I am

pleased to say that we have now re-established a regular weekly Service of Holy

Communion at All Saints’ Church each Sunday at 10.30am.

Regular monthly worship began last month at St Michael’s, and it is hoped that

we can soon return to worship at St Mary’s, St Aidan’s, and St Nicholas.

As society continues to discover the ’new normal’, so our church communities

are similarly working and praying towards a new tomorrow. This is slow work

since many of our congregations are still shielding and/ or are anxious about

gathering together. Additionally, national Church Guidelines are revised each week

in accordance with Government policy and currently it is unclear how more

frequent or larger scale worship may take place.

Nevertheless, we give thanks to God for the ongoing love and dedication of

those serving our five church communities – in and out of the church buildings.

Next month, on Saturday October 17th, the Revd Bridget Gillespie, Deacon and

Curate will be ordained Priest by Bishop Paul in All Saints’ Church. Although

Coronavirus limits attendance to invitation only, please remember Bridget and her

family (Bryony and Barley) in your prayers, as we give thanks for her ministry

amongst us.

Finally, I would also ask your prayers for all those involved in education at this

time, staff and pupils, as they wrestle with challenging policies and the pressure

of a return to school this month. May they do so in the light of God’s Love and

Hope.

May you each be blessed on your journey,

The poem/prayer that follows was written by the daughter of a Franciscan friend.

We have been given permission to use it in our magazine, and I thought it well

worth sharing. It catches the experiences that so many have been, and still are,

enduring. It is sensitive, moving and beautifully written. I hope that you find it

as appropriate as I did. Brenda [Hewitt]

2020 vision

Blessed are you who are sick and suffering,

May you be loved intensively.

Blessed are you who are unable to attend our own relative’s funeral

May you be comforted.

Blessed are you who hunger and thirst for immunity:

Immunity from disease; immunity from despair; immunity from fear.

May you enjoy health, healing and wholeness.

Blessed are you poor and you poorer than ever

The pearl of great price is waiting for you.

Blessed are you health care workers, shop assistants, and loo roll makers

#we will remember.

Blessed are you teachers, educators, home school parents, pupils and students

We are all to be called the rainbow children of God.

Blessed are you who are computer literate

who show the rest of us how to reach out beyond our separation.

For now we see but through a screen darkly, yet soon we shall meet face to

face.

Blessed are you who are climbing the walls

We will climb out of this together.

Blessed are you writers, musicians, meditators and mystics who are thriving on

the peace and quiet

We long for you, as well as the fruits of your creation.

Blessed are you film-makers, actors, directors, and costume designers

Providing streams of respite and relief in dramatic times.

The final scene will be well worth the wait.

Blessed are you who have postponed your wedding

What a great party it’s ultimately going to be.

Blessed are you environmentalists for you already knew:

The air could be clear, the waters blue, the skies filled with singing.

We have sung apart, we will sing together.

Blessed are we who can no longer travel to our church, synagogue, temple,

mosque, or meeting.

Love is in our midst. Exactly where we are.

Blessed are we who are dazzled by new 2020 vision

For a new way of being, a new heaven, a new earth.

The Rectory

St James the Least of All

My dear Nephew Darren

I think your idea for both our Confirmation groups getting together for a

weekend away – socially distanced, of course – was excellent and our meeting

last week drew most of the plans together. We didn’t take any minutes, so let

me record the decisions I believe we made.

Since all of us have to sleep far apart at the centre, I am prepared to spend the

nights at a local hotel. By chance, I have found that there is a four star one

only a few miles away, so I have booked myself in.

As the dining area in the youth centre may be cramped, I am also willing to

have dinner each evening at the hotel, thereby creating more space for the rest

of you. An additional sadness is that, since breakfast at the hotel is not served

until 8am, I will not be able to join you either for your pre-breakfast dip in the

nearby stream. It would be grossly unfair to expect you to pack lunch for me, so

I will arrange for the hotel to provide me with a picnic hamper for one which I

can have while you all enjoy your cheese and pickle sandwiches.

I think it will be an excellent learning experience if you prepare all the teaching

sessions yourself, but be assured that I will always be on hand to give the

advice of experience. That large armchair near the fire in the common room

seems to be the best place for me to sit, so I can keep an eye on proceedings,

while I take on the responsibilities for stoking the fire. This reminds me; do make

sure that the young people are encouraged to saw enough logs each morning

for me to fulfil my obligations.

Naturally, my arthritis will prevent me being able to accompany you on your

afternoon hikes, but I will cheerfully park my car wherever you leave the minibus,

to provide a second vehicle in case of emergencies. I do not mind in the least

waiting all those long hours until you get back; I have already found an

attractive tea shop in the village.

I am fully aware that not sleeping or dining at the centre, not being responsible

for preparing the teaching, nor being involved on the walks will mean that my

contributions will be ever so slightly limited, but these are sacrifices I gladly make

in order to give you further experience in your ministerial career.

Your loving uncle,

Eustace

WHAT’S IN YOUR HAND?

September is usually the time when we get back to our normal routines after the

summer break. With the current coronavirus pandemic, it’s very different this year!

However, it is still a good time to consider how God can use us to make a real

difference in our workplace, school, family, friends and community. He equips us

with everything we need to make His love known.

When God gave Moses the job of bringing the Israelites out of Egypt, He asked

the question, ‘What is in your hand?’(Exodus 4:2). Moses was holding his staff,

which represented his livelihood (what he was good at); his resources (his flock

represented his wealth) and his security (which God was asking him to lay down).

God asks the same question of us: What has God given you? Our gifts,

temperament, experience, relationships, mind, education can be used in the work

God has given us to do. How will we use them to make a difference in the

places where He calls us to serve Him?

John Ortberg, in his book It All Goes Back in the Box, speaks of Johnny, a 19-

year-old with Downs syndrome. He worked at a supermarket checkout putting

people’s items into bags. To encourage his customers, he decided to put

a thought for the day into the bags. Every night his dad would help him to

prepare the slips of paper and he would put the thoughts into the bags saying, ‘I

hope it helps you have a good day. Thanks for coming here.’ A month later the

store manager noticed that Johnny’s line at the checkout was three times longer

than anyone else’s! People wanted Johnny’s thought for the day. He wasn’t just

filling bags with groceries, he was filling lives with hope!

What has God given you that will help and encourage others?

DON’T CHASE WHAT ISN’T THERE

‘…those who chase fantasies have no sense.’ Proverbs 12:11

Have you ever been attracted to computer gaming? For many people it has

become addictive; and they spend so much time in their fantasy world that their

own avatar and those of their fellow players have come to seem more real to

them than their own family and friends.

You can get so drawn into this virtual world that you can resent the time you

have to spend in the real world. Instead, you have come to prefer living in your

fantasy world, where you always have the power and control. Problems come

when a person spends so much time in their virtual world that they are too tired

and distracted to do anything productive in their real world.

Some people say that Christians live in a fantasy world, that our faith has no

basis in reality. But faith in God is not a crutch – nor is it a fantasy. Jesus was

an historical person who lived and died – and rose again. Those who follow Him

as Lord find that knowing Him, and having His Spirit within them, gives them the

strength they need to live the right way in the real world, and to reach out to

other real people with God’s love.

A GRAIN OF SAND AT A TIME

This autumn, do you feel overwhelmed with all the things that you need to get

done? Then think of your life as an hourglass. There are thousands of grains

of sand in the top of the hourglass; and they all pass slowly and evenly through

the narrow neck in the middle.

We are like that hourglass. When we start in the morning, there are hundreds of

tasks which we feel that we must accomplish that day. But if we do not take

them one at a time and let them pass through the day slowly and evenly, as do

the grains of sand passing through the narrow neck of the hourglass, then we

are bound to break our own fragile physical and mental structure. Do not

attempt more than God designed you to do.

Page 11: St Aidan’s hurch, Gillamoor St Mary’s hurch, Farndale SURPRISE … · 2020. 8. 28. · SURPRISE VIEW September 2020 THE CHURCH MAGAZINE OF KIRKBYMOORSIDE – GILLAMOOR FADMOOR

FEEL THE TUG

Have you ever wondered how you can be certain about who and what God

really is? One Christian put it this way: “I’m reminded of the story of the little

boy who was out flying a kite. The wind was brisk and large billowing clouds

were blowing across the sky. The kite went up and up until it was entirely hidden

by the clouds. Then a man came by and asked the little boy what he was doing,

staring up at an empty sky. “I’m flying my kite,” he replied.

The man replied: “What kite? How can you be sure it is still there? You can’t see

a thing.”

The little boy agreed that he could see nothing, “but every little while I feel a

tug, so I know for sure that it is still up there and is connected to me!”

When it comes to God, you don’t need to take anyone else’s word for it. You

can find Him for yourself by inviting Jesus Christ into your life. Then you too will

know by the warm wonderful tug on your heartstrings that though you can’t see

Him, He is up there, and that He lives in you. You are connected!

A CUP OF JOY! A tea shop is a wondrous place

Where I for one just love to be!

A place to rest from life’s harsh pace

And sit and drink a cup of tea!

Indeed, it’s time to take a rest!

From all life’s pressures, take a break!

And just today it might be best

To have a slice of home-made cake!

HOME GROUPS

We are delighted to announce that the Home Groups will be starting up again

this September continuing in the Holy Habits series of study and contemplation.

This may well have to be by zoom because of current restrictions and we

recognise this might be unhelpful or inaccessible for some. We are looking for

ways to help anyone who wishes to come on these faith explorations and so

material can be made available through email or other means.

The 8 week subjects for study and discussion are ‘Gladness and Generosity’ with

Liz or Lynn and ‘Prayer’ with John. If you would like to join one of the groups

the leaders are proposing meeting times for Mondays from 3:30 with Liz

Garthwaite, Tuesdays from 2:30 with Lynn Goslin or weekday evenings (to be

arranged) with John Castle. Do feel free to contact Lynn, (01439 771823) Liz

(01653 695264/07889 284162) or John (01751 433256) for more information or

to discuss the meeting options.’

APPRECIATION

Dear Parish Magazine,

Well, they really were the Forgotten Army, weren't they. VE Day

— flags all over, VJ Day — nothing.

I stood alone at The War Memorial at 11am remembering a friend who was a

POW of the Japanese in the Far East, and what he and his fellow prisoners

endured, and then, although the church clock wasn’t working, at 11am the

church bells rang. I assumed they would stop at 11, but they kept going and I

counted 75 chimes in all. VJ Day HAD been remembered after all!

I would like to say a very big thank you to whoever was up in that bell tower

ringing those bells, and say how much it meant and was appreciated – by many

others too, I am sure.

It was a poignant and thoughtful tribute and somehow entirely fitting, that as the

world continued, absorbed in everyday life, they were remembered in this

gesture . Thank you again.

With best wishes

Geraldine Pewtress

HELPING CHRISTIANS OF CENTRAL ASIA DURING COVID-19

What do you do when you are persecuted for your faith during lockdown? Open

Doors, which works with the Persecuted Church, has shared a story from their

partners in Central Asia.

It’s become sadly familiar to hear stories of Christian women around the world

who are persecuted by their fathers or brothers. But Zebede is facing attack from

her own son.

Like many of us, Zebede has been under lockdown at home in her Central Asian

country. Her adult son is bitterly against her Christian faith, and blames her for

all the family problems. He threatens her, beats her if he sees her reading the

Bible, and even rips it. He doesn’t like to see her praying, and he threatens to

burn down her church. The lockdown has been a hard test for Zebede.

So when Open Doors partners recently arrived at her home with a bag of food,

Zebede burst into tears. The supplies were vital, but she was even more delighted

to see fellow Christians again.

But Zebede is only one example among thousands of Christians across Central

Asia. Lockdown has deprived them of income, and then the local government

often deliberately neglects them when official COVID-19 aid is distributed. On top

of that, they cannot even meet with other Christians, and are instead isolated at

home, often with their persecutors.

But Open Doors partners have been hard at work to bring vital relief aid and

encouragement. On-going support from British donors has meant that local

churches can be resilient voices of hope in their communities.

One local church has seen their vision expand by twenty times. “We set the goal

to help 100 of our local families,” says the church leader, Pjetr. “Frankly, we

didn’t expect to be able to cover so many families. This is a huge amount of

money for us. But today we are helping more than 2,000! This is a miracle!”

PANDEMIC AMID MILLIONS OF LOCUSTS

The six African countries where Send a Cow works face devastation, not only by

the pandemic, but also the huge swarms of locusts which have destroyed

thousands of acres of crops.

In response, Send a Cow staff have supported struggling communities by

teaching them how to prevent the spread of the virus, as well as good hygiene.

Send a Cow is also providing radio broadcasts with information, and emergency

food supplies and seeds, so that the farmers do not miss the next critical

planting window.

Now Send a Cow is asking supporters in the UK if they could commit to a

personal challenge like a run, cycle or climb, to raise funds, or maybe even

simply donating on behalf of their business or family. One couple ran and

cycled for 260 miles, raising £2000. “Whatever we can each do is greatly

appreciated,” says Send a Cow. If you can help, go to: https://sendacow.org

LANDMARK BOOK EXPLORES CELTIC CHRISTIANITY

A retired archdeacon has told the remarkable story of Britain’s oldest centre of

learning.

Philip Morris, former Archdeacon of Margam, has written the first in-depth history

of the monastery and training school founded in the small Welsh town of

Llantwit Major – Llanilltud Fawr – more than 1,500 years ago.

St Illtud’s monastic community dates back to around 500AD and is regarded as

the cradle of Celtic Christianity. It has been called the ‘Christian axis of the

Celtic-speaking people’ and the ‘University of the Atlantic of the Celtic period’ by

church historians.

Llanilltud – The Story of a Celtic Christian Community by Philip Morris is

published by Y Lolfa and described as ‘one of the greatest untold stories in

British history’.

GORSE – CHEERFUL AND PERFUMED, BUT PRICKLY!

The old saying ‘Kissing is out of season when the gorse is

not in bloom’ is based on the fact that it is a rare time

of year when a flower or two cannot be found. The bush

itself, growing on heaths and moors is well-known for its

vicious spikes. This is its answer to the problem of

producing leaves that will withstand wind, rain and hungry

animals.

The golden yellow flowers are at their absolute best in spring when the bushes,

growing often to a height of seven to ten feet, seem to glow in the countryside.

They attract bees and other pollen-seeking insects and many of us enjoy the

rich coconut-like perfume as well as the joyful colour. The sharp foliage gives

protection to several species of bird as they nest deep in these bulging bushes,

and larger animals such as sheep and cows, if grazing nearby, will take

advantage of gorse as a very effective windbreak.

In the past, gorse, also known as ‘furze’ or ‘whin’, was used as fuel as it burns

very readily when dry. This has caused many serious moorland fires in recent

years, but gorse is fortunately a resilient species and quickly sends up new

shoots from the burnt stumps that remain. It is also apparently somewhat

susceptible to frost, but will recover quickly with new growth.

A member of the pea family, its seeds are set in brown, somewhat unattractive

pods, which on a hot summer’s day can be heard popping, or they may be

provoked into doing so when held in a hot hand. However, what might surprise

us even more is that in the past, in country districts, it was used for drying

washing, as the thorns would allow nothing to escape, even in the strongest of

winds!

BORROWED

Teacher: We borrowed our numerals from the Arabs, our calendar

from the Romans, and our banking from the Italians. Can anyone

think of other examples?

Student: Well, we borrowed our lawnmower from the Smiths, our lad-

der from the Browns, and our hose from the Jones….

Page 16: St Aidan’s hurch, Gillamoor St Mary’s hurch, Farndale SURPRISE … · 2020. 8. 28. · SURPRISE VIEW September 2020 THE CHURCH MAGAZINE OF KIRKBYMOORSIDE – GILLAMOOR FADMOOR

LOUIS PASTEUR – ‘FATHER’ OF MICROBIOLOGY

A tiny invisible thing that brings disease and death …. where have we heard that

before?! But Louis Pasteur, who died 125 years ago this month, on

28th September 1895, was not interested in a virus from China, but in tiny living

organisms that brought disease and death in other ways.

Pasteur made some outstanding breakthroughs. He discovered the principles of

vaccination, and then created the first vaccines for anthrax and rabies. His

medical discoveries provided support for the germ theory of disease and nullified

the theory of spontaneous generation.

But Louis Pasteur is best known for his invention of the technique of treating

milk and wine to stop bacterial contamination, a process that was named after

him: pasteurisation. In doing so, he saved the French beer, wine and silk

industries.

All in all, this gifted French biologist, microbiologist, and chemist well deserves

his title as the ‘father of microbiology,’ and to be seen as one of the three main

founders of bacteriology.

MUSIC AND MEMORY

Have you ever heard a certain song or tune that immediately takes you back to

your youth? It can be a very poignant moment.

When researchers at the University of Westminster examined the choices of 80

different guests on the BBC radio show Desert Island Discs, they found that

most guests had chosen music which dated back to when they had been

between 10 to 30 years old. This time span was identified as a ‘self-defining

period’ in their lives.

The research concluded: “The music we know and love between the ages of 10

to 30 will play a significant role throughout our lives, connecting us as

individuals to other people, places and times that become central to our

identity.”

What songs trigger the big memories for you?

BRING BACK HEDGEROWS

We need our hedgerows back – urgently. They are part of ‘nature’s toolbox’ to

help us reduce our carbon emissions.

That was the recent message from the CPRE countryside charity which points out

that there were twice as many hedges in England before the Second World

War. Since then thousands of kilometres of hedges have been ripped up to

make way for new housing and motorways, and to merge and enlarge fields.

The 2007 UK Countryside Survey found that there were 600,000 kilometres of

managed and unmanaged hedgerows in the UK, with the vast majority of them in

England.

This was a significant decline on the same survey from 1984, when there were

about 680,000 kilometres of hedges across Great Britain. That is a reduction of

80,000 kilometres, or 50,000 miles. To put that another way, we have ripped out

about 57,000 times the entire length of Britain (874 miles).

No wonder, then, that the CPRE’s report, Greener, better, faster: countryside solu-

tions to the climate emergency and for a green recovery, calls for millions of

pounds to be spent on new hedges. It says: “By planting more trees and hedge-

row, restoring peatlands and moving toward a more sustainable way of farming,

we can use nature’s toolbox to capture greenhouse gases from the air, while

revitalising our natural environment.”

SCHOOL

Mother to young daughter after first day at school: “Well, dear,

what did they teach you today?”

Daughter: “Not much. I’ve got to go back again tomorrow.”

ESSAYS

A second year student explaining to a first year student how to

write essays: “When you take stuff from one writer, it’s plagiarism,

but when you take it from many writers, it’s called research.”

CHURCH CLEANING

Although the church is open only on Sundays and Wednesdays for private

prayers and also there is a service of Holy Communion at 10.30 am each

morning (Covid secure), it has been decided in the interest and safety of every

one to still put on hold a rota for cleaning. Most of our cleaners are 65 years

plus and our priority has to be their safety.

A big thank you to our cleaners for their dedication

If you would like to join the happy band of cleaners, please give me a call

new members.

‘I DO LIKE TO BE BESIDE THE SEASIDE!’

For centuries, many doctors have sent patients to the seaside to recuperate,

believing that a bit of seaside air was good for them. Now the government

agrees: a day by the coast does indeed have a therapeutic effect on you.

A recent study by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has

found that people who spend time by the sea reported increased happiness and

better general health. They were also more physically active during their visit,

compared with visits to other types of environment.

Rebecca Pow, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for

Environment, said spending time by the sea “has a welcome impact on our

wellbeing. This makes it all that more important that we take care of our

environment.” In England, we make 271million recreational visits to the sea each

year, and more than 22million of us live within five miles of the coast.

YOUR FACE MASK AND YOUR DOG

Face masks have been a big adjustment for all of us, but dogs especially may

be struggling, warns the animal charity, Dogs Trust.

Dogs use our facial expressions to tell how we are feeling, so if they suddenly

encounter people whose faces are covered, they could become confused,

stressed, and even feel threatened. Their confusion may lead to a loss of

obedience and cooperation with you.

Here is how to get your dog used to you wearing a face mask:

Hold your hand over your face for a moment, speak reassuringly to your dog,

and then reward him.

Introduce your dog to your face mask, let him sniff it and let him see you put

it up to your face, and then down again. Reward him.

Put it on for a moment. Reassure and reward him.

Put it on and move about the room, while reassuring him. Reward him.

Gradually build up the length of time that you wear the face mask around him.

Keep reassuring him. Reward him.

Expect that he may not be so quick to understand and obey you when you are

wearing the mask – be patient.

Don’t take him into public places where many people are wearing masks, unless

you absolutely have to do so. It could be very stressful for him.
