Fifth Sunday of Easter

Today is Mother’s Day. A day to honor our moms for being the greatest mom in the world. A day to remember all the wonderful lessons that mom taught. A day to treat mom as Queen for the Day. There are many ways we can remember our mothers. A Mother’s Day card, breakfast in bed, taking mom out to dinner, a heartfelt gift, a tender hug and kiss. Many of our moms are in heaven. We’ll always remember them.

Beatitudes for Moms Blessed is the mother who wears her baby’s orange and blue construction paper corsage on her best dress when her family takes her out to Mother’s Day brunch – for though her older children will pretend they don’t know her, her youngest will be oh-so-proud. Blessed is the mother who (after allowing a reasonable amount of time for her children to work it out) steps in and tells the neighborhood bully to bug off – for her children will know she will always be their champion during the rough times. Blessed is the mother who pardons all shortcomings (after gently commenting on them, of course) – for her children will probably pardon hers, as well. Blessed is the mother who takes time to joke with the clerks in the stores she visits even though it may humiliate her teenagers – for they will learn that it’s all right to be friendly to strangers. Blessed is the mother who doesn’t make the beds after her children – even if they make a deplorable job of it at first – for they will learn to do a better job after a few uncomfortable nights of tossing and turning. Blessed is the mother who, in spite of it all, genuinely enjoys motherhood, and is not afraid to say so – for her children will know that they are loved, and may grow to one day be blessed mothers.

It was the first day of school. The kindergarten teacher asked the children what they wanted to be when they grew up. One kid blurted out, “When I grow up, I’m gonna be a lion tamer. I’ll have lots of lions and tigers and I’ll walk into the cage and …” Then he paused. He thought for a moment and said, “But of course, I’ll have my mother with me.” Our moms are the most beautiful people in the world. Happy Mother’s Day to the most beautiful women in the world – our moms.

The Way

Today we sense the apostles’ trepidation as they begin to realize that the Lord would soon be leaving them. In their fear, they ask, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” (John 14:5). Jesus tells them that he is the way. The Easter season has been a time of growing in Easter faith so that we, too, may learn to know that Jesus is the way. We can take com-fort in the Lord’s promise that he is going to his Father’s house to prepare a place for us, his chosen people who have been called out of darkness into God’s won-derful light. As the paschal candle continues to burn during this holy season, let us remember that in baptism we were given the light of Christ. I thanked God for the caring you’ve shown me through the years, for the closeness we’ve enjoyed in times of laughter and tears. And so, I thank you from the heart for all you’ve done for me and I thank the Lord for giving me the best mother there could be!

KC’s Bingo Night Monday night is Bingo night at the KC hall. Doors open at 5pm, and games start at 7pm. Burgers, hotdogs, and other snacks are available for pur-chase. All proceeds also go to help fund local charities.

This weekend is graduation at St. Meinrad. The next step for some graduates is ordination as priests in their diocese. The third-year theology students are preparing for or have received diaconate Holy Orders. Second-year philosophy students are receiving a Master of Arts Degree in Catholic Philosophical Studies. And so as we say goodbye for the summer we look forward to a well-earned break. For some though, the goodbyes will be more permanent as they leave St. Meinrad to their continue studies at other seminaries or are discerning out of the seminary.

The reading from the Acts of Apostles describes the selection of the first deacons. Ministering to others is a vital part of the religious life. All of us seminarians will be leaving the Hill this weekend traveling to parishes and hospitals to begin summer ministries. As with other areas of academics, sitting in a classroom or at weekly ministry assignment does not give one a complete appreciation of the need of patients or parishioners. These summer experiences help to provide pastoral flesh to the bones of theology classes taught at the seminary. For many, these assignments will be fraught with new experiences preparing us to become priests. Some people will not be receptive to the Word of God or turn away when told that we are Catholic. Some seminarians will be a little wary entering an unknown parish possibly not knowing anyone. In all of these ministerial challenges, we can walk into these situations with confidence because Jesus already there waiting to assist us in caring for His children.

A portion of today’s Gospel often is read at funeral masses. Jesus’ promise to go before and prepare a place for us upon our death is a welcoming place for us. For those of us left behind, there is a solace of the promise that one day we will be reunited with our loved ones. But today’s Gospel should not be thought of as exclusively for the welcoming of the dead into heaven. The Gospel also brings to us in our daily lives the comfort that Jesus does not reside solely in heaven. He is with us throughout the day waiting for us, giving us the fortitude in our next encounter that is in need, our next stressful event when things do not go as planned. As we go out into the world that often is full of sin and hatred, remembering that Jesus is already there to support us, makes those threats seem not as overwhelming. Father Neal Hock, the Vocation Director for the Diocese of Grand Island, has assigned me to St. Agnes Parish for my summer ministry. Therefore, I will be back with you until mid-August. On the Way to Mass: As Christians, our family is part of the community that Jesus left on earth. How do we mirror what Jesus taught? On the Way Home From Mass: Do we belong to a parish community that shares the Good News? How do you know this? Living the Word: Remind the family that Jesus promised us that he would wait for us in heaven. We need to spread the Good News while we wait here on earth. What is the Good News today? Each day this week, have e a member of the family share some Good (Gospel) News. Make a refrigerator chart and share the news! An example would be, “I was a Christian when I (did my homework without complaining, picked up my toys without being told., complimented someone at school, brought coffee to a stressed coworker). Small “messages of good news add up!

T o t u s T u u s Curriculum The Sacred Scriptures and the Catechism of the Catholic Church p r o v i d e t h e

foundation of the catechetical instruction of the Totus Tuus summer catechetical program. One of the unique features of Totus Tuus is the two independent cycles of catechetical materials. The six core topics of catechesis (which come by dividing the four pillars of the Catechism into six major elements) and the four mysteries of the Rosary make certain that every summer has an original presentation of material for the students. Totus Tuus seeks to foster openness to vocations in the young people we serve as well as among the teachers. This is accomplished by placing special emphasis on the importance and necessity of prayer, Eucharistic devotion, and Marian devotion in addition to catechetical instruction and formation in the Catholic faith. This year the content focus will be The Mystery of Salvation and the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. Graduating St. Agnes alumni from both Scottsbluff and Gering High Schools returned to their alma mater to walk the halls one last time on Tuesday, May 10th. Wearing their caps and gowns, the students were greeted and cheered on by current St. Agnes students as they paraded up and down the school’s halls. The individual students introduced themselves and shared their future plans. Each was presented a small gift from the school. Congratulations to these students and the best of wishes for much continued success in the future.

Poetry Cafe

1st grade students spent a great amount of time during the last quarter composing poetry that would be shared at their poetry café. These young writers wrote: Haiku, Couplet, Opposite, Simile, Acrostic & Diamonte styles of poetry. Once written and edited, the students practiced delivering their works to Mrs. Blanco’s Lincoln Heights 3rd graders before presenting their Poetry Café for their parents.

The 2nd semester reading incentive party was held on Friday, May 5th for students who met their reading goals in the 2nd semester. Students participated in numerous wild and wacky western activities including: corn hole, horse/barrel racing, bean bag games, horseshoes, eating smores, and animal roping. As well, they were thrilled to visit the small petting zoo that included a baby calf, goat, chickens, kittens and a BIG and small dog. The event closed with a visit from the snowy bus, which was welcomed by all, as the temperatures soared into the 80’s. Congratulations to all the readers and thanks to the parents and staff who made this party a huge success.

As we sadly say good-bye to 2 staff members, Margie Dishong and Paige LeDoux, we are excited to welcome Amanda Brill and Kristie Neilan to our staff. Miss Brill, former pre-k para, will be teaching 3rd grade and Ms. Neilan will be the new office manager. Both ladies are alumni of St. Agnes School and come highly recom-mended for these positions. Also hired is Teresa Johnson who will serve as the busi-ness manager for St. Agnes Church and School. Teresa will be working out of the parish office. Welcome to all of these ladies, we are excited for you to join our team.

Classroom News... 1st Grade Class by Brooke Lacy

Farwell to Third Grade It is difficult to believe that the school year is nearly finished! I have had a wonderful year with the third grade students, their parents, St. Agnes staff, as well as the rest of the students at St. Agnes. God gave me a special gift when Mrs. Brown hired me last summer to teach this third grade class. I have enjoyed teaching these students, have loved watching them learn and grow, have marveled at their curiosity and creativity, have laughed with them and have cried with them, and have been inspired by their kindness, generosity and compassion. They have filled me with love and joy! They will forever hold a special place in my heart. We are finishing off the year with a variety of activities, which I hope will be memorable when they look back on third grade. We will be going to the Wildcat Hills Nature Center and Recreation Area, swimming at the Splash Arena, fishing at Terry’s Lake, and problem solving life supports for space, then designing and creating a Space Station, and we hope to sneak in a walk to Scotty’s Drive-In for a treat! Over the summer I will be looking forward to seeing my “old” third grade class. Next year they can find me downstairs, in the Library. I’m very excited to have the opportunity to work in the Library. It will be great fun to see all the St. Agnes students and to get to know them better. Books and kids! What could be better! Have a great summer! See you next year!

May holds many activities for us to participate in! We had class pictures, held our poetry café, went to the Gering Baling Station, and we will go to the zoo. Not to mention, we also have our talent show to look forward to at the end of the year! The students did great sharing their poems with friends and family. Thanks to all the families who were able to come make this day great! They have been looking forward to this for a very long time! We even made new friends along the way as Mrs. Blanco and her 3rd grade class from Lincoln Heights came over to St. Agnes for a visit! We were very blessed to spend time sharing stories and poems with them! A HUGE thank you to Angie for bringing her students to our school! This also reminds us that this school year is coming to an end. I want to thank all of the parents and volunteers that have helped make this year a great one! It is with joy, yet a little sadness, as I spend my last couple weeks with this amazing group of 1st graders before sending them off to soon become 2nd graders! Parents, words cannot express how grateful I am that I had the opportunity to teach your child this year! I have truly enjoyed teaching this class and have Loved watching them grow over the last year! I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for them; I know it’s a bright one!
