North Carolina State University Course Syllabus ST 350 - TBD - Economics and Business Statistics ST 350 Course Syllabus ST 350 – Economics and Business Statistics Section TBD FALL 2013 3 Credit Hours Special Notes This is a Distance Education Course Course Description Introduction to statistics applied to management, accounting, and economic problems. Emphasis on statistical estimation, inference, simple and multiple regression, and analysis of variance. Use of computers to apply statistical methods to problems encountered in management and economics. Learning Outcomes Statistics is not a spectator sport! Like any other endeavor, you will get out of this course what you put into it. The material that we discuss in this course does not "go away" when the semester is over. The remainder of your undergraduate career and your career after graduation will benefit greatly if you learn this material now rather than later when teachers and bosses simply assume it is already part of your analytical toolbox. Some of you are already involved in careers and have nonacademic jobs, but for most of you school is your primary job; treat this class as part of that primary job. In the workplace, skipping days on the job can have negative consequences (such as getting fired!) Your college courses are no different. Course Structure Avoid "out of sight, out of mind". Since there are no face-to-face lectures to keep the course high on your to-do list, personal discipline is required to be successful. This course is not easy; do not make it more difficult by neglecting it for extended periods of time. Cramming the night before an exam will not work; the course material is better learned and understood in small bites, not big gulps. You are strongly encouraged to get a fast start, cultivate good study habits, be diligent, and maintain a steady study pace throughout the semester. The homework due dates will assist you in maintaining an evenly-paced study schedule. This approach will ward off feelings of panic when an illness or unexpected business trip upsets your study schedule. Mastery Points 150points

"Mastery points" are one of two components of the homework for the course (the other homework component is the webassign homework). Mastery points are accessed at BUS/ST 350-601 Economic and

Business Statistics Fall 2013, our course content website, asfollows: • click on the "Mastery Points" link in the left panel of ourcourse content website • the resulting window shows the topic objectives for the first fewchapters of the text; "Practice" and "Quiz Me" buttons are includedfor each topic objective. • to see a list of all the text chapters click the "View all chapters"link in the upper right portion of the window • in the list of chapters click on the link for the chapter of interestto you; a second link for the chapter appears below the originalchapter link • click on the second link below the original chapter link to viewthe chapter window; the chapter window shows a list of practice exercises for the chapter.

Page 5: ST 350 Course Syllabus - Nc State University · ST 350 Course Syllabus ... • textbook chapters 6.1-6.10, 12.1-12.5, 13.6, 14.4, 15.5; ... You have until midnight Wednesday, Sept

• from the drop-down list of the topic objectives for that chapter, click a topic objective • the original list of practice exercises will be reduced to thepractice exercises that focus on the topic objective you selected • if you want to go directly to an auto-generated quiz to earn themastery point for the topic objective you seleccted, click the QuizMe link • As you pass the auto-generated quizzes and earn mastery points, your performance is automatically tracked at our course contentwebsite BUS/ST 350-601 Economic and Business Statistics Fall2013 grade book. You should strive to earn 15 mastery points over the duration of the

semester. You earn a mastery point by "mastering" a topic objective. You master a topic objective by scoring 80% or higher on a 5-question(or less) auto-generated quiz dealing with that topic. Theauto-generated quizzes consist of fill-in-the-blank and multiple-choicequestions. You are allowed to take an auto-generated quiz on aparticular topic as many times as necessary to earn the mastery pointfor that topic. Each chapter has several topic objectives; in all thereare approximately 200 topic objectives in the text. You can chooseany 15 topic objectives to master to earn your 15 mastery points; eachmastery point will contribute 10 points towards your course grade. Therefore you can earn as many as 150 points towards your finalcourse grade by mastering 15 topic objectives of your choice (clickGrading in the left panel). There are no specific deadlines for earning mastery points. Eachchapter, except Chapter 1, has topic objectives for which you can earnmastery points. As you earn mastery points, your performance is automatically tracked at the BUS/ST 350-601 Economic and Business Statistics Fall 2013 website in the MyStatLab grade book. For each topic objective there are practice problems to assist you inmastering the topic objective material before taking the auto-generated quiz. The practice problems are an excellent learning tool since you receive immediate feedback on your answers. You are given three chances to answer a question correctly before your answeris graded as "incorrect". If a question is graded as "incorrect", you can choose "Similar exercise" to get another chance to answer a similar question correctly. You can repeat this process as often as you like until you correctly answer the question.
