Pupils and staff have also been busy creating amazing house stalls, so please come and join in the fun if you can. Thank you to everyone who has generously donated Christmas jam jars, hamper gifts and tombola prizes – don’t worry if you haven’t managed to hand over your kind contributions as you still have until Thursday morning next week (November 30). Please ensure your child has signed up for a slot if they would like to see Santa in his new grotto location. Early booking will help avoid the disappointment of missing Santa before he rushes back to finalise Christmas present preparations. Additional helpers for the Fair set up and packing away are always welcome. We look forward to seeing you all next Friday! [email protected] [email protected] We really love Science! “Mr Andrews was trying to think of a good pun to do this topic justice, unfortunately his head Hertz”. The topic of Electricity started off with a lot of blank faces after this 'joke'. However, laughter and fun filled the air moments later when Year 4 learnt they would be identifying which of their toys run on electricity. Our next lesson was particularly hands on and the children began getting to grips predicting whether or not different circuits would turn on a lamp, buzzer and motor. It was extremely pleasing to see so many children having their own 'light bulb’ moments as they tested their predictions. Aryan quipped "I love making circuits, they're so interesting!" Next, we looked at conductors and insulators and we are grateful to Mrs Mellin for lending us her wedding ring-for the investigation which was returned – unharmed! The children have since applied their knowledge to help them solve problems in their latest STEM project: to create a moving car. Every child has been able to build a circuit (which includes a switch, motor and battery) to power their machines. Keep a watch out for our speedy cars which will be coming soon! Head’s Corner Celebration Assembly today was a very true reflection of all the fantastic events and successes that take place throughout each working week. Like an over packed suitcase the table was spilling over with awards for ballet, athletics, karate, swimming, Mathletics, reading and tables as well as the usual Headmaster’s, star pupil, house, music and sport awards. What a wealth and variation of talent we have at St Faith’s. I still don’t quite understand why the Golden Balls are so valued and applauded though?

St Faithian Autumn Term w/e 24 November 2017

Friends of St Faith’s With just a week to go before the much anticipated St Faith’s Prep Christmas Fair (3.15pm, Friday 1 December) we are delighted to say that we have been working hard with Santa’s helpers to prepare for the big event. Early booking will help avoid the disappointment of missing Santa before he rushes back to finalise Christmas present

preparations. Additional helpers for the Fair set up and packing away are always welcome. We look forward to seeing you all next Friday! [email protected] [email protected]

We really love Science!

Aryan quipped "I love making circuits, they're so interesting!"

Next, we looked at conductors and insulators and we are grateful to Mrs Mellin for lending us her wedding ring-for the investigation which was returned – unharmed! The children have since applied their knowledge to help them solve problems in their latest STEM project: to create a moving car. Every child has been able to build a circuit (which includes a switch, motor and battery) to power their machines.

Keep a watch out for our speedy cars which will be coming soon!

Head’s Corner

Celebration Assembly today was a very true reflection of all the fantastic events and successes that take place throughout each working week.

Sport Report Sun, fun and football won! Our U11 Girls’ Football had a convincing win at the Spring Grove Tournament on Wednesday and what a brilliant

display of football it was too, with fantastic support from our parents. Earlier in the week our U9 Mixed Football team took part in a tournament with 16 other teams at Goodwin Academy and the U9A&B Girls played Hockey against St Lawrence. A busy week of games to be reported including our valiant efforts from last Friday at the ISA Tournament. Go to our website for a more in-depth report in the Latest News section at www.stfaithsprep.com

Book Sale

All of the children enjoyed buying books in the amazing book sale today! Children were able to browse through all of the books and select ones they would like to buy, for only 50p each! There was such a great atmosphere with children reading together, even taking their books out to enjoy at playtime. A huge thank you to all of the parents who have donated books. They were in fantastic condition and we managed to raise over £75 today for brand new books for our library. If you have more books to donate, or have yet to sort out your cupboards, please remember you can still bring them to Mrs Allen's classroom in Year 5. We are pleased to let the eager readers know that we will hold another book sale next Wednesday! If you would like them to have the opportunity to buy a book, please remember to give them some coins. Thank you. Yvette Allen

Reception go shopping.

Reception children enjoyed gaining an understanding of the concept of money by going to visit the local village shop. We compared prices and looked at the cost of various items to see what we could buy with our money. Luckily James found some sweets for 10p so we were each able to buy a packet to take home...but only after we had carefully counted out our pennies. A big thank you to Mr Palanisamy for accommodating us.

Imagination and Technology for Year 1

Imaginations were sparked when children in Year 1 were set a task to design a truck, label its parts and construct a sentence about their creation. Using iPads it was great fun to support their writing and record a sentence or two. What a creative way to teach punctuation!

Nursery

Did you know? Blowing helps to strengthen muscles in a child’s mouth...and to facilitate this, one of musical activities during their music session was playing the trumpet. This activity links in to their expressive art and design lessons where they explore and learn how sounds can be changed. It’s always great fun in nursery when children get to blow bubbles and explore what happens to the water when you blow through a straw.

Book Review Snuggling in bed reading to my children individually is the highlight of my day! George and I have been enjoying ‘Letters From The Lighthouse’ by Emma Carroll. Together we have experienced evacuation during WWII to the West Country through the character Olive and her brother Cliff. The siblings defend one another through the traumas of meeting new children and settling into a new community. As the story unfolds the children live with Ephraim the Lighthouse Keeper and discover secrets codes and plans to help Jewish refugees. Olive’s strong character and empathy with the plight of the Jewish refugees help the children in the village understand some of the tragedies surrounding their escape from Austria. However will Olive and Cliff ever find out about the mysterious disappearance of their sister Sukie in an air raid? Having met Cressida Cowell, at an author event, Zara and I have been reading ‘How to Train your Dragon’. This is a fast paced novel following Hiccup and his fellow Vikings as they select their pet dragons and then have to compete in an initiation process which ends in disaster! Hiccup and his dragon Toothless eventually save the day by speaking ‘Dragonese’, and ensuring they earn the respect of the elders and remain within the clan! Reading helps us disappear into imaginary worlds together where we can share adventures every night. By Helen Coombs
